    Just turned 60. Still coding. Tried the management route. It's not for me.

    For all the projects I work on, they are coded to standards and the message that the powers-that-be tell users: "If it doesn't work in your browser, get a better browser". Projects are tested in latest of Chrome and Firefox. If something doesn't work in IE, TFB. The same will apply for Edge.

    Unless there is a need for the end user to edit the document, docs should be sent as PDF, not an editable format.

    I do a lot of learning on my own time to benefit my next employer. If I just relied on what I need to know to do my day-to-day job, I'd never be ready to get the next position.

    Indeed his argument is full of logical fallacy. It could just as well be said that "We saw Apple under Sculley, and we saw Apple without Sculley". Jobs was a visionary; will Apple be different without him? Almost certainly. But that's a far cry from "doomed".

    I love Dune the novel, and much as I'd love to see it "done right", I'm not sure that's possible for many of the reasons already outlined.

    But, why isn't anybody tackling some of the other great Science Fiction stories just waiting to be filmed?

    Off the top of my head:

    • The Mote in God's Eye
    • Hellstrom's Hive
    • The Humanoids
    • Childhood's End
    • Dragonriders of Pern
    • Downward to the Earth
    • The Two Faces of Tomorrrow
    • To Say Nothing of the Dog

    and so on...

    Snap! That one scene is the most fascinating in the book! On first reading, I got nothing out of that scene. In fact, thought it was boring to tears. Then upon a re-read a few later, I was completely blow away by how much sub-text there was beneath the dialogue.
