Technically speaking, emerge -u does not completely upgrade your system to the newest release. You need to update your system profiles as well. If you are upgrading from 2004.1 or later, it is as simple as
# rm/etc/make.profile
# ln -s../usr/portage/profiles/default-linux//2004.3/etc/make.profile
However, if you are upgrading from versions earlier than Gentoo 1.4, it is quite complicated. For more information, see the Gentoo Upgrade Guide:
