You DO know that you just described EXACTALLY what DirectX (DirectDraw/Direct3d) are, don't you?
DirectX has a HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) and a HEL (Hardware Emulation Layer). What isn't supported by hardware is SUPPOSED to be done in software (with exceptions of things too slow in software).
Your comarison doesn't match because developers would be held liable for a skill that they present as "Professional". Similar would be making the brick layer accountable for a building coming down.
As much as I feel for you, can you really blame them? This would be like a casino putting in a slot machine that paid out to "unlucky" people. For a profit to be made (and incentive to keep on doing business), insurance HAS to issue policies in where the general perception is that the policy holder will be paying out more than they will ever get back. As unfair as it is, it makes perfect sense.
... the rest of the world probably doesn't care. While China may be on the same physical planet as the rest of us, they arent playing on the same logical field. In terms of copywrite and intellectual property, we are completely seperate worlds, and I doubt either really cares about the other.
To be honest, I would have never brought it up if I had such issues. It was one of those things that ALMOST always worked great for me... and any collegues that I spoke with that delt with the same.
It is possible, though, that I am in the minority.
In my opinion, Beowulf is not the hammer everyone thinks it is. Ask the average slashdot reader even, and they relate Beowulf to something more like OpenSSI or Mosix... something you can easily add nodes to, and just use a special compiler to compile all of your multthreaded/multiproc apps and it will all work magically.
If you are one of those people, stop. A Beowulf cluster is a performance cluster, but it is not a replacement for an SMP system. You more or less have the master node delegate actual computations EXPLICITLY in your application (EX "Hey... Node X, Caclulate X + Y for me, kthx").
Clustering (NOT performance clustering mind you, which is NOT the topic at hand anyway) has been around in Windows NT as far back as I can remember. With NT4, you needed to have Enterprise Edition, but it was there.
An LCD requires power for lighting. Once E-Paper has been "printed", it is like non-volitile memory... it needs no power to stay that way. E-Paper should end up being loads cheaper, thinner, lighter, more veritile than an LCD.

Doom 3 is actually different in the whole scheme of things, in regard to "Sequels for money and profit". From what I recall, there was a big "gathering" at iD where the staff said "We make Doom 3 or else!!!". So the staff actually WANTED to do this addition to the Doom series.
"Kevin Cloud and (Click link for more info and facts about Adrian Carmack) Adrian Carmack, two of the id Software owners, were always strongly opposed to remaking Doom. This is after many old fans complained that id was going back to the same well too often. However, after the warm reception of (Click link for more info and facts about Return to Castle Wolfenstein) Return to Castle Wolfenstein and latest improvements in rendering technology, most of the employees agreed that a remake was the right idea and confronted Kevin and Adrian with an ultimatum: "allow us to remake Doom or fire us" (including John Carmack). After the relatively painless confrontation (though artist (Click link for more info and facts about Paul Steed) Paul Steed, one of the instigators, was fired in retaliation) the agreement to work on Doom 3 was made."
Though, I THOUGHT someone DID get fired as a result of that ultimatum, I can't find anything to back that up
I am not sure if of technical abilities of OpenDocument... one of the thing MS LOVES to do, especially with their office documents, is use OLE storage. This way, they can use their documents and contained objects more like persistant classes. This is the main reason that a lot of MS technology never finds its way out of Windows.
To me, the grammar is still wanting here and wrong; the party should have said, "Can you take the table downstairs?"
This all really depends on where in location the speaker is in relation to the listener. "Bring" would most certainly be appropriate if the speaker is at the bottom of the stairs and the listener was at the top. On the other hand, "Take" would be appropriate if the listener AND the speaker were at the top of the stairs, or the speaker was at the top and the listener was at the bottom.
The difference between "bring" and "take" are something you seem to be ignoring on purpose... "bring" means start at a destination away from me, and approach. "Take" means to start at a destination (usually implied close by, but not always), and move to a location away from me.
I've GOT alternatives... MP3 player and an online store. Take that away from me? MP3 player and my local p2p app. Shut that down? I can still get vinyl AND cassette tapes. Put two bowls of tomato soup in front of me... one looks great, but I am only allowed to eat it with chopsticks, and the other is a bit cold, but I can eat it with a spoon or whatever I want... guess which one Ill take.
Joanna: Oh, what if you get caught? Oh, I, I, I, I just don't know if this is such a good idea. Peter: (angry) Yeah? Well, maybe it wasn't such a good idea for you to sleep with Lumbergh! Campaign donations are the ultimate form of free speech. Money does not corrupt a politician; unlimited power to tax, regulate and spend is the problem.
Are you kidding me? Politians are very much like (to use some imagery that you people can relate to) . You need/want a feature, you are willing to throw some money at it to make it happen, so you approach said open source project leader and say, "I am willing to donate 6 million dollars to your cause if you are willing to take care of our needs in terms of feature X". You say no, you get no money.
Now let us make this example with say... a Pennsylvania Senator... Comcast approaches said senator and says "I see you are about to run for office again... I am willing to put some money toward your cause, if you can make our 'zoning issues' go away". "No" means no money. You think that is ok? I sure the hell dont.
Why not have like a beta.slashdot.org, and put these changes there. That way the bleeding-edge travelers will use it and report bugs, while we can use what is current until that is ready? Makes sense to me anyway...

While the origin of "ain't" means 'am not' (not sure why it wasn't "amn't"), the meaning today certainly means 'does not'.
Similarly, if you are an american, you will notice the meaning of "ignorant" changing from 'Ill informed' to 'Asshole'
