I use gentoo, and almost everything compiles very quickly . . . because I have compilied and optimised gcc! I mean, OOo and Mozilla aren't exactly instant, but still Gentoo is my favorite distro, as everything else is. Also, many apps go about 10% - 15% faster. I say, give it a try. It won't kill you.

I agree with you, but I think that some people can get angry when code under the bsd licence is used in a closed source project (case in point: OpenBSD in Windows Server 2003). If you are interested in the multitude of "officially" open-source licences, look at opensource.org/licences
Well, they are using the clients of those protocols. The standards of the protocols are open, but you can't d/l the source of some of the most popular/clients/. Examples: Kazaa, mIRC.
I don't think it's really gone mainstream on the desktop. On the server, it really is, but few normal people even know what free software is!
BTW, Apache isn't a product, it is a project. You're probably thinking of the Apache HTTP server (abstract concept) or the Apache HTTP daemon (the program.
FIRE IN THE HOLE! INCOMING LAWYERS!!
You always knew your actions would catch up to you, and land you a possible fine of up to $250,000 and up to 5 years in prison. You pretended that you thought they were lying.
Nor did they make a chat client and protocol that loses money. In my opinion, Microsoft is just doing this to take over the market, so they can up the prices when there are no competetors. The bread and butter of a monopoly.
Come on! I have a fricken' beowulf cluster of linux-powered atomic supermen, but SCO still hasn't sent me an email! I could use a half an hour of entertainment . . . or I could just watch Family Guy . . . whatever is easier.
Oh no! They can tell!
/me puts on his tin foil hat, uses 4096-bit encryption on his filesystem . . . makes another lame Soviet Russia joke.
But .ogg is an open standard!
You mean my talk sessions through ssh aren't secure any more?!?
/me puts on his tin foil hat.
That is correct. The gentoo team is considering moving to The Y Windowing System instead, when Y is more mature.

Sorry. I screwed up on the formatting. The first line, the speaker is (bigboss_22) and the second is (mikie_49). It alternates every line.

Another One you missed.

"Standard units." Pffft. The real standard units are metric! Only the US could one ask for a cubit of rope, or a hog's head of petrol ("gasoline").
In Slashdot, the moderators filter you!
The real problem is rooting out the fads. Remember synergy, consumer centricity, and Microsoft Windows?

It's very common to work on a piece of software that might rely on some third party library that you don't have source for.
That is true, but it always worries my when open source software relies on closed-sources or standards.

Unfortunitly, the CAN-SPAM act doesn't apply to slashdot.
You've got me wondering now if I can order a G5, and get a refund for OS X, running linux instead.

Yes. I have gone through the kernel source, and bash, and the gnu tools. Check your facts first, troll.
