    Well Microsoft - or better: the vendors do this with every nearly every x86, printer, mouse, soundcard, usb stick, external harddrive.... nerly every piece of hardware sold today. I'm waiting for a tux- and an apple-sticker (sometimes you can see the "finder-face" on certified compatible hardware (like I already saw on some newer laserprintes)

    I do shutdown all access to this drive before syncing it. About you solution: Hot will you know when you second drive (bakup) is defect ? I will know the next day when network access wont work.

    I would suggest you dont buy a RAID System: Heres what I do: I got 3 harddrives - one small one with a tiny linux installation on it and 2 harddrives of the same size for data. Every night Drive 1 is rsynced to Drive 2 and unmounted. Now Drive 2 will be mounted instead of Drive 1. The next Night Drive 2 will be rsynced to Drive 1 and so on. The great advance: If you accidentally delete a file, you have untill midnight to restore it without any hazzle.

    This seems like a really smart idea. Dont go an get the Ultra-Gigaherz-Processor but a descend, processor that consumes only a low amount of power -> Longer batterylife for laptops -> Silent PCs -> Longer lifetime of the processor (?)

    I get it every day: Data in excel is a kind of ultimate disposal place for data. Can you something out ? Yes, but only as crappy CVS (Thats too much for most users) - You can't read excel files with a python script - can you ? Can you calculate ? Yes with huge VB Applications - Tons of non-centralized, non-standartized calculations and spredsheets, every developer creates his own solutions for problems already solved. Thats why i don't like Excel as it is used today.

    You are right but some things make me think different: o If Trusted-Computing is established once - how can you get rid of it ? o Will Joe User care more about a huge Diskdrive and a shiny graphic card to play the newest games - or about "technical stuff" like Trusted Computing ? I don't think people are dumb - I think they just don't care because they don't know enough about it and don't get informed...

    Joe user won't care. Joe user will buy it. The masses of users who don't care will enforce the trusted computer and in the future no non-trusted computers will be aviable (I can really imagine the Windows after Longhorn will not run on a non-trusted computer)

    One thing that is certain: If you use a Mac, you have no exotic hardware and drivers should work quite well. Thousands of users have the same harware configuration as you. Therefore you can get the most out of the hardware - if you want to use linux on a mac - I think MacOSX is quite a nice Operating System, especially for desktop use.
