    For the last time:

    IT IS NOT *THEFT*!!!

It is copyright infringement. Plain and simple. I have not walked into the studio and taken the physical property of the artist. Still think its theft? Dictionary.com:

To constitute theft there must be a taking without the owner's consent, and it must be unlawful or felonious; every part of the property stolen must be removed, however slightly, from its former position; and it must be, at least momentarily, in the complete possession of the thief.

Copyright infringement doesn't meet all of those conditions. When I download something, I have not removed "every part of the property" -- you still have your copy, and so does the artist, the studio, etc.

So please, stop spreading the propoganda. It's not theft.

Yep. More and more in this country, punishment for what in all actuality are petty crimes is greater than that of serious crimes such as rape, theft (the real kind of theft where you actually take property from someone else), and murder/manslaughter. It is made even worse when new laws are passed that make it illegal to do what was already illegal anyways. Case in point: DMCA. It was already illegal to copy the new Britany Spears CD and sell it on street corners, but now it is *more* illegal becuase you bypassed that copy protection just to do it.

Since everyone in this country is becoming a criminal, my advice to all of you is don't drop the soap.

That means that instead of just listening to packets as they fly by, it actually sends out 802.11 frames to request info about any APs that will respond. So whereas you will get wireless nets that otherwise have no traffic at the moment, you won't get any that don't broadcast their SSID.

So to answer your question, yes, a NIDS tool could detect that you are sending out 802.11 frames at the rate of once a second. :)

Hear hear. Seems like the Administration (including those in charge of the computers/network) are more concerned with Covering Their Own Ass® than anything else.

For example, I recently got an out of school suspension. Why? "Inappropriate Use of Computers." What did I really do? Installed some GPL apps on a computer that I use all day every day. (Audacity, VNC, ssh, dvts... I'm in charge of our TV studio, this stuff helps me get things done.) Obviously, I was pissed when I came in one day to find out that the shit has hit the fan. Oh, then they had the balls to call me at home 2 days later when they couldn't figure out how to turn on the lights in the theater.

Anyways, since I am producer/editor/everything else, I have the issue of copyright to deal with: The kids in the TV class submit their videos (which we later air on closed-circuit TV to everyone inside the building) with songs as background music or whatever that they have either downloaded or ripped off a CD. During the aforementioned shitstorm, the issue of copyright was brought up. They refered to some guide that had some bullshit about using 10% of copyrighted works. I say that is bullshit as I just read from this post that there is nothing of the sort in the actual law.

This is very much a grey area, and makes me wonder, is what we are doing actually fair use (I think it is), or is it indeed infringement and should I start getting worried about the the RIAA's Private Copyright Enforcement Force, er... the FBI knocking down the doors?

    - Prompt for any programs trying to start up with the computer
    - Have only one method for a program starting up with a pretty little 'startup' icon in the control panel

Again, "do I want to start up 'ClockSync' at boot? Sounds important, I probably should!" Not to mention that there is no way that they'd break compatibility by removing support for all but one startup method. I do like the idea of a "pretty Startup icon," so long as it incorporates applications from ALL startup methods. (But then, how do you deal with NT Services? You don't really want Grandma disabling the "Windows Audio" service--oops, now sound doesn't work.)

    - Disable IE's install on demand by default (probby most common method for spyware)

You're probably talking about ActiveX, which can be very useful. The better way to go about this would be if the Code Signing Authorities (VeriSign, etc.) would have more stringent requirements before they sign spamware. (By default, unsigned code won't run.) Unfortunately, with VeriSign, this won't happen anytime soon. (*caugh* SiteFinder *caugh*)

    - Allow users to disable popups without a fucking extra program (fuck developers and their incessant popups - MS gives way too much control to them and none to the end user)

I do beleive the upcoming IE has a built-in popup blocker.

    - Have Windows control the uninstall and not some crappy script written by the same company that wrote the crappy software that user wants to uninstall cause' it was crappy

Which is exactly what Windows Installer is designed to do.

    - Allow the user to enable plugins only when desired (disable flash advertisements and stuff)

Good idea, but Grandma will never use it. The more enlightened will use The Proxomitron anyways.

    - Quit allowing programs to install a shortcut in startup, the quicklaunch bar, the desktop, every goddamn folder on the computer, favorites, and quit launching a secondary program just to launch a button that launches the main program!!!

You can use ACLs to prevent writes to those directories. However, when something tries to write to one of those folders, there could be a prompt along the lines of "Do you want a shortcut to AwesomeShitwareApp installed in the Quick Launch?" Downside: The good apps with nice installers already do this, would piss some people off that they are being asked the same question twice.

It's hard to fathom the intellectual rot and moral bankruptcy of a person ...

    Intellectial rot? Moral bankruptcy?

The only 'intellectual rot' I see here is from someone who whips out their holy book in defense of what their religion has brainwashed them into thinking is right. (mods, read the whole thing before slapping this as flamebait)

And please explain to me how someone is morally bankrupt, even by your standards, by making a political comparison? He says that the views and policies of the Bush Administration are similar to those of the the Taliban. He does not say that Bush == (Satanism || Atheism || Islam || etc...). Quite honestly, I can see how Bush ~= Taliban.

USA PATRIOT Act, anyone? PATRIOT II? MATRIX? The list goes on. That sure seems like canceling Constitutional Rights at convenience to me.

The most annoying thing about the Christian crusade to legislate their morality on me is that when I say, "You know, that may be the way it is to you, but what about other people who don't believe in that?" they just give me a funny look, as to say, "What do you mean, not believe in that???"

I know this because I live with 2 very devout Christians. I recently got in an argument with one about gay marriage. Of course their viewpoint is, "It's wrong and should be banned!" But who says it is wrong? "God." But what if I don't believe in your god and/or believe in the god(s) of a different religion? "It doesn't matter, God says it is wrong ergo it should be outlawed."

What? Excuse me, but this is a country (supposedly) founded on the principle of religious freedom. The Constitution says I can pick whatever the hell religion I want and be free from the government telling me "no." This is not a country where the morals of one religion are to be legislated on to everyone regardless of their choice of religion. Whereas your religion says homosexuality is wrong, mine does not. Fine. You worry about yourself following your morals. I will worry about myself following mine.

Obviously, there are a few exceptions. These have to be what we can all agree on, though. (That's why we should all VOTE, but that's another topic...) For example, I think we can all agree that murder and theft are indeed bad. I want to be able to live, and I want to be able to live without you taking all my stuff. You probably feel the same way.

Disclaimer: I myself am not gay, I simply believe that *everyone* deserves freedom of choice. Also, I do not think all Christians are bad. It is the extremeist nuts and/or those who try to shove their religion and their morals down my throat that I have a problem with, no matter which religion you come from.
