    also leaves out SCCS (a precursor to RCS), as well as layered tools/integration of tools ONTO the SCM (like eclipse -> SVN, etc.)

    the article was a good intro to the history of SCM, however i am amazed they didnt just do a box, and put their tool in the upper right hand corner...

    if they get caught, expel their pathetic @sses with entries in their transcripts. the best to mediocre schools will not admit them, and companies that i have worked for (oracle, google, etc) will never touch them.

    simple economics of risk vs. reward. with a 'politically-correct' attitude of 'we will just lower the grade', they risk nothing by cheating (they probably would have received lesser mark in the first place).

    and those that are good enough to not get caught, will probably end up in law school...

    ...And by definition a funder of university drug research in SOME cases, I have a significant problem with this idea (that drug I pay to have created are forced to be sold cheaper somewhere else). And I am sure that should such silliness be attempted, a regulation preventing goverment funding will not be used in such a manner. and then you can kiss off university research !

    I do know that profits on patents held by universities alows them to retain the best talent, and therefore continue innovative and ground-breaking work. Everyone benefits, believe it or not.

    I am all for the common good, but not when 'student groups' decide that socialism is good for me and mine ! And I am sure that once thier folks or the taxpayers quit paying thier tuition, they will feel the same way. Remember the saying 'A liberal is a Conservative who has yet to be mugged'...

    Along those same lines, DB apps (Oracle, DB2,etc), and some server apps (Apache SSL cache off the top of my head) use shared memory structures (in *NIX).

    When the structure is created initialized, and equal ammount of swap in allocated (whether it is needed or not). this would be a perfect place for this sort of memory.

    I would think that with the current partnership MicroSoft has with NBC should include streaming distribution. It would not take much to extend from news to network programming.

    It is almost as if they network of Law & Order is playing Microsoft against Apple...

    It is not enough to have 'star' engineers, you MUST have dedicated and motivated individuals. Being a good programmer does not imply willingness to work towards a common goal or play well with others. In some ways I would rather have a team of mediocre programmers who were reliable and worked well together than a couple of 'stars' who had thier own agenda.

    And how much of his stuff did he get from the PARC team (including Alan Kay and Adele Goldberg) at Xerox ? UI design has always been 'borrow and improve'. But some of the best UI's out there are from the non-technical folks who dont know it 'is not done that way', not the techies who love flashing lights.

    Can we add that San Francisco is a very well known tourist destination ? What about the fact that it is in close proximity to Cal and Stanford (think interns, grad students, and thesis work), so new ideas and cheap labor is abundant. And did any one mention that it is close to silicon valley ? Not to dismiss Rome as a wonderful tourist spot, but it does not immediately come to mid when I think 'technological innovation'. But you are correct, instead of mapping a location in close proximity to the tech and the people, and easily accessible for 'ground truthing', they should have done this somewhere else...

    In addition to the threat that GIMP might pose to the sales of Photoshop, dont forget Scribus, a competitor with InDesign (and the old FrameMaker) product. With tight integration (via XML docs, KDE, etc), these could be a real threat down the line, especially at a savings of (over) USD$500 per ! and when people say GIMP is not Photoshop, what percentage of the people even use 30% of the capabilities ?

    When I ran it on my laptop, I was getting an average of 120 FPS. And while I respect the effort and appreciate the use of OpenGL, I cant see this killing Flash in the near future (or in any other parallel reality). Server-side scripts should stay just that, IMHO.

    Apple came out with Lisa (per Mac flop) before MS came out w/ windows. and w/ only one button, it requires a 'double click' to select and launch an application. PS:you can measure the strengh of the O/S by the number of buttons on the mouse. Mac with one, Windows has two, and *nix has three !

    I was under the impression that such regulation is generally effective in protecting the consumer AND thier choices. A good case in point is what happened when the airline industry was de-regulated. And very few can complain that we are worse off since the ATT break-up (though SBC no longer falls into the 'baby bell' status). But not having oversight in essential services ? Almost like drug companies: you MUST pay what they ask for ! I am a strong supporter in free-market economics, but we have seen (Enron comes to mind) when CEOs run un-checked. And your argument about cell phones needs a little work: it was the gov't who forced number portability. Is that bad ?

    Would be to declare ISP (and the internet) as an 'essential service' or utility. And as such the ISP would have rules governing thier behavior, including anti-trust laws.
