Better yet, RedHat 8 to RedHat 9..... If you have a free weekend, try that. It is good wholesome fun for the whole family, lemme tell ya!
In case you care, it doesn't work cuz RedHat added the native posix threading thing as of 9 and applications built against 8.0 or earlier libs will not work (with a few exceptions, I hear).
As a side note, you mentioned building KDE. I built KDE using konstruct right after 3.2 came out, and it took the better part of 8 hours on a 2.4GHz/1GB RAM workstation.
Need to upgrade to a new version of some server software because there is a vulnerability?
Actually I almost always compile key stuff from source anyway, because I want to know that features I want are compiled in.
Need new software now? Ok, wait an hour for a compile
And if you, as an admin, take less than an hour to test your rpm (or whatever) software installation, on a mission-critical server, you're not doing your job. I will give you that it takes a long time to compile most things, but in my book, it's time well spent.
There is something very appealing about a distro that is so source-code driven (for lack of a better tem). It embodies all the best things about open-source software.
I have been extremely happy with Gentoo. It's rock-solid stable, and its the speediest of any distro I have tried (no doubt due to all your applications being optimized for your specific system).
If they came out with an "enterprise" version I think I would give it a whirl, I can see it easily being a great fit in my server room.
I wish them all the best.
I wonder if a game popularity's diversity of region is based more on level of detail rather than what the game is based on.
You have an excellent point. The more specific the game, (or more specifically the plot and entire social platform) the more likely it is that it will only be tied to the region for which that game was targeted.
Again, I think either the author of the MSNBC story has an axe to grind, or did not think through the implications of the statements that he made.
What about Doom? Half-life? Those two games are easily two of the top 5 games of all time
Agreed. In the US. The main difference, I think, is the huge culture difference. Look at the Samurai, vs. the American soldier. For example, Americas Army Operations vs. the later versions of the Final Fantasy series. One appeals to one cultire, while the other appeals to the other.
games like GTA3, Halo, and Madden are the bread and butter of most college-aged males video game experiences here in the west. I think it's an important distinction to make.
... The Legend of Zelda. As I recall, that game was made in Japan, by a Japanese developer, even based on many elements from his real life.
Also, as I recall, the game was wildly popular in both regions. Granted, it was a Japanese game ported to the US market. But, aren't most of the best games in the US? My experience with "enter the matrix" was that it sucks!
IMHO, this is another case of results being skewed to some agenda.
I wrote a program years ago that started a timer when the button was pressed and stopped it when it was released, and would display the time the button depressed.

I think around $200 million would convince me to license my technology to Microsoft.:-)
Although now they're "the smarter way to send money".
People oughtta update their links. Most of us know that Google bases result rankings largely on how people link to that site with the relevant keywords (that is why Google Bombing is possible).
Apparently many sites still link to xoom.com with 'free web hosting' or similar. Just Google www.xoom.com then click the "Find web pages that link to www.xoom.com/" link.
As far as I know RedHat has shipped everything open source for a very long time now.
Yea, RedHat ships everything GPL (or compatible) with the exception of their artwork. I installed Fedora last week for the first time (had been running mdk 9) and it's great. It's stable, runs great, highly configurable, etc. And, it seems to me to be among the "freer" of the distros.
I was SOOO irritated at RedHat stripping mp3 support at first, until I read why they did it. I gladly bit the bullet (and downloaded the patch for xmms;-)
Personally, I prefer backporting. I see no reason for me to upgrade my installations of kernel 2.4.x, etc. when the system runs just fine. It adds a lot of value to Linux if (at the very least) patches are backported for at least 2 or 3 major revisions. Look at the outcry when our pals in Redmond said no more Win98 support. That only underscores the need for packporting and supporting software for an extended period after the last "official" release.
One of the clients I mentioned in my reply to this article was sayin sumthin about getting popups like that... I dunno if it was yours but he said "... and this one said dont fucking use spyware"
OMG! That makes me angry. The plugin that comes from the first URL is from www2.flingstone.com which redirects to the following URL:
http://www.blazefind.com/license.html
which is a clear slyware eula. I suspect that this would install and run beautifully on my Linux box with Mozilla 1.6... I feel like a child who has just had his innocence stolen.
I have never seen that. Do you have some URLs? I would love to be able to write a "blacklist" extension that would prevent XPI dialogs from sites on the blacklist.

You (gasp) TEST things before you implement them!
:-D
Apparently you are not employed by Microsoft

Shigeru Miyamoto has a shrine online: http://www.miyamotoshrine.com/ that is QUITE fascinating.

Ever look at the credits for most X-Box games? Yeah, names like Chris Jones and Alex Johnson are pretty Japanese my friend :-)

I don't recall the case name or anything right off-hand, but I know that at least in California, that was shot down by the state Supreme Court.
Why is this necessary?
It's gnecessary kuz it's kool.

That means Tripod might not be around anymore. WTF are the phishers supposed to use now?
*sigh*
Oh well, there's always geocities...
This was reported three days ago by another reader.
Yawn.
I thought it said something to the effect of "he is tasked with spreading Earth germs to other worlds". Talk about spreading your seed!
The material consists of a lattice of onionlike spheres in which the particle core and its layers each contain a different dye.
Not quite as organized as a crystalline structure, but hell, it's almost the data crystal I and all of us have been promised for so many years...
DAMNIT! Just realized that I replied to the parent instead of an earlier post. Mod down accordingly.
Remember when Reasoning, Inc audited the code? They found that it had 0.09 errors per 1,000 lines of code while proprietary competitors had 0.56 errors per 1,000 lines. That's more than 6 times as many errors in the proprietary databases. http://searchenterpriselinux.techtarget.com/origin alContent/0,289142,sid39_gci941817,00.html
Quality product. That is why it is popular. Perhaps you should research your argument before posting a flame next time.
