    I think it's a hoax for technical reasons. There's no way in hell a watch battery can power a GPS receiver AND some kind of transceiver (cellular? come on.) to send GPS data back to a tracking device.

    This is not a reason for it to be scary or detrimental, you're merely stating a reason for it not to come about.

    The UN becoming a federal government might be the only thing that can save the environment from us. Decisions like environmental protections need to be made but are in the best interests of no one with any power.

    I miss DS9 like crazy, and Sisko is no small part of why. Avery Brooks is a terrific actor and I'm dying to see what he and the rest of the cast can do in a movie format.

    Aside: I think the reason she was technobabble-spewing was because shortly before she moved to the command track, she was a science officer on several ships.

    Just thought I'd point that out. I rather liked the idea of a scientist captain, though of course the idiot writers never actually made use of it.

    I'm not sure how "heavily armed" PT boats are, but the Defiant had the latest of top-of-the-line combat technology - a Romulan cloak, multiphasic shielding, ablative armor, gatling phasers, quantum torpedoes - the list goes on.

    Yes, by all means, let's deride advanced education as being worthless and a foolish pursuit. It's much better to try to learn everything by yourself and reinvent the wheel rather than participating in a community environment of study.

    Because, of course, who needs community? People are awful. I'd much rather stay in my mom's basement with my ...For Dummies books and only leave the house to stare in the window of the hot chick next door at 11PM.

    I'm a liberal, and that shocks the shit out of me.

    $10bn is such a small part of the budget (when you take into account that the "expenditure" would be effectively spread out over the years that the r&d was done) - and to have GUARANTEED results from the appropriation... Jesus. I really hate my own party sometimes.

    I did exaggerate a bit, but that was a BIG part of the reason the STS has wings. Other reasons include greater return path flexibility and a way to take the fatigue of "hard-core" re-entry (like in a Soyuz) off the astronauts, but these concerns can be addressed in other ways.
