    Look at it another way.

Company A interacts with Company B regularly.

A and B frequently share files, documents, presentations etc.

Ex-Employee tips off the BSA that company B has illegal software.

BSA does an audit, and 100% of company B's application are licensed,
    but there is a problem.

Company A had purchased font sets, which they used in documents now stored on Company B's
network. Company B has no license to those fonts on any of the 500 workstations in
the facility. BSA says B owes fees for each font in every document, times the number of
    workstations.

Does company B have the right to archive, store, and use the documents they received from Company A or not ?

    1) Does not sync with iPod. How can anything be an iTunes replacement if it can't sync with the iPod. There are F/OSS projects that sync with iPod, so why can't this project do it ? iTunes is a way to manage music on my iPod. I think the thundersongbirdfox team missed a critical feature by not including sync support.

    2) How many F/OSS projects were initially windows only, and then went on to be a major cross platform success ? Right, so already we can see that this team is not interested in the bulk of the F/OSS community.

    3) Does not support music I already own. Weather or not they agree with my choices, I own music with fairplay DRM, and I want to keep playing those songs. They will have to support DRM laden songs if they want to replace iTunes.

This project is destined to fail. Too many things are working against them for it to gain any momentum.

  19. Re:Killing the Golden Goose on Warner Chappell Apology For PearLyrics · · Score: 4, Interesting

The record companies followed the true American dream of quick profits at the expense of quality and longevity.
The artists they promote are the musical equivalent of rubber dog shit, fake vomit and whoopie cushions.
Good for a few moments of entertainment, but not really worth the money it costs.
It's obvious the Artist of the day is just a new texture of vomit or a new scent of shit.
That's why the industry burns through them so quick, they are disposable products to the execs.

Given the mass bombardment of the crap on the airwaves, it's no suprise people don't buy CDs at
the rate they used to. I'm sick of the crap the first week a new single comes out. Luckily that
same single will still be on the playlist 3 years from now. The radio no longer entices me to get
to the record store to buy the CD I want, it reminds me of why I haven't been to the record store since
    the 90s.

Anyways, I don't know anyone who blows a hard earned paycheck on adding to their rubber vomit collection on a frequent basis.

    A realistic business plan ?
    1) Leave the faith based community. A lot of their statistics assume people want to own this crap.
That in itself requires a greater leap of faith for me than the flying spaghetti monster.

2)Join the real world. The music that will be worth promoting is on mix tapes being distributed underground, small clubs, and lately in peoples homes. Come up with a way to capture the home recording artist without taking advantage of them. The artist already figured out they don't need the record companies. $0.03 a sale from the industry execs for a million album sales at $20 an alubum is the same amount of profit as Ten thousand sales of CDs direct to the consumer when sold for $5 a disc.

    3) Profit less. We know how much a CD cost, we know how much color ink costs, we know how much the studio time costs.
$18 for a CD is outrageous. This price is only supported because of the monopoly they have over the distribution channels.

They buttered their own bread. Todays pop bands are the equivalent of rubber dog shit from hong kong. It's a novelty item meant to be enjoyed and forgotten about, with a low expectation of enjoyment from the get-go. The industry knows it, that's why they keep cycling through "hot new stars". The life span of a musician, whose greatest talent is their marketing team, is very short. People don't want to own this crap, and they have no connection to the marketed talent to even think about buying a CD. The downward trend in music sales will continue until the RIAA affiliated industries find some musicians that make music that markets itself.

We are probably from different generations.

I think of the subscription model as a false value. I don't trust the man. At any point they can change the terms of the contract, and if you don't like it, you just sank a boatload of money into music with nothing to show for it. The library is large, but maybe 3% of it is of interest to me. Of that 3%, maybe 3% of that is worth purchasing.

At any time, the company could go under and you have just lost your investment.

You can always subscribe somewhere else. But, what if your portable players don't support the DRM of their files ? What if the other subscribers require OS upgrades to something supporting the latest and most restrictive media libraries ?

I predict, that eventually subscribers will have the freedom to choose between different skins on their monoploy approved, DRM infected, media system. The burn to CD hole will be closed as CDs become 'obsolete'. The portable will be provided with the subscription, and it will send home information on how much music you have, how much you listen too, what hours, etc, etc. What type of music you like will be linked to big bro's TIA database to screen out potential criminals, terrorist, and those who disagree with official policy.

No thanks. I'll stick with podcasts and mixtapes for exploring music.

It doesn't matter to me, I use either AIFF and mp3. iPod fits my bill, and I don't have to constantly make up excuses for why i don't want an iPod, or pretend the iPod is crippled because it can't support me and 200 other people who ripped our music into a format with limited adoption.

OGG might have better compression and better sound, but it requires more processing power. Processing power drains batteries, which really makes OGG a poor choice for a portable player, while remaining a fine choice for a home jukebox.

and yet that hippie conveniently ignores the many experiments published where there are meaningful differences in the biological systems used in scientific study. Maybe it's not necessary to do tests on monkeys, and chimps. But I think one of them needs to be done.

For some of us, having it work on a fruitfly is not good enough to begin human testing. A warm, fuzzy, and pain fealing animal is going to be used at some point in the development of drugs and the study of diseases. The mouse was intelligently designed 75 million years before the intelligent designer was able to assemble the first human prototype.
