  1. Re:Great site & Favs on Weblog System Features Compared · · Score: 3, Interesting

This is not a troll, but I've seen tons of these sites suffer from a slashdotting. Now I understand that the Slashdot crowd can deliver quite a punch, but many of these Open Source CMS systems have too many mysql database queries per page. That will reduce your capacity even further than bandwidth. Especially on a popular shared hosting plan. I'm a huge Postnuke fan and I usually have about 25 people on my site at a time (max), and one day got slashdotted. I saw the number of users grow to about 350 online at one time (based on a 5 minute interval). The page slowed down some, but I was suprised that it stayed up the whole time.

Disclaimer: I'm not sure how MANY people it actually takes to bring down a page, but this was a huge number of visitors for my site. Anyone know how many people are on Slashdot at any given time?

  2. Re:Drupal on Weblog System Features Compared · · Score: 1

I evaluated the same, but settled on Postnuke. The communinity there is also very nice and helpful. One of my defining moments as a Postnuke user is that I got slashdotted a few months back. I was really surprised how well Postnuke held up to the load. I'll probably never get that much traffic that quick, but it's nice to know. One thing I read about a lot of popular CMSs is that there can be way to many mysql database queries each time a page loads. Make sure you get a CMS that's designed to be fast from the ground up. Once a lot of work goes into a CMS, it's sometimes hard to go back and re-write the core.

Yeah, you'd think even if you you had sorry filters in place, some filetering would be better than none. Giving up is just the wrong thing to do. Many people have had good success with Spam Assassin, even if you have to fine-tune it by hand it should help with the obvious and common spam emails. Some of the spam will always get though, but it shouldn't be too had to catch the majority of spam.

That certainly sounds like a good idea. What are the trade-offs though? I guess it may take slightly longer to open a file, but that seems like it would be worth it in my opinion. Are there any other drawbacks? What about files larger than 20M?

I agree. AMD has some really great products. We always hear about Intel's huge R&D budget. I'm not sure how much of that is alloted to processor design, but it doesn't seem like they've been able to outrun AMD. AMD might not always have the fastest chips at any given moment, but they are always close behind. Since I don't buy bleeding edge equipment due to the high cost premiums, AMD is always a solid choice for me.

A similar question is whether or not you can upgrade Redhat. I'm running version 9 now (newbie here) and tried in frustration to upgrade mysql and php this past weekend. All I could find was rpms for fedora, not red hat. I know redhat is being discontinued, but it was a nightmare for me. I tried to install from the source code, but got stuck in dependancy hell. Since I have a pretty fresh redhat install, I'm considering dumping it for a different distro. I'm currently debating between debian, fedora core 2, and mandrake 10. I may install each one and see what I can handle. Linux definately has a learning curve and I am just not there yet.

I imagine that most of these virus writers are not formally educated in programming, but able to hack together code snippets they find on the web. It's a wonder some of them work as well as they do. I doubt they do peer review or use a CVS to manage their code.
