Stealing is wrong, but AltaVista kinda sucks. I'm sure the brainiacs at Microsoft can come up with something better than AltaVista. In time we will be able to see if they can knock off Google. I'm sure they will embed search technology into thier new OSes, so that would be a huge advantage right there.

Many people usually don't know which linux packages are the best and it takes an experienced linux user to point out the packages that are must have. ie:

    Apache vs IIS
Apache is free and has less security problems

    Mozilla vs IE
    ditto above

    the GIMP vs Photoshop

On the other hand, most of the truely great apps are written for linux. They are usually feature packed, have very little security problems, etc.. Examples would be MythTV, Apache, MySQL, the GIMP, Mozilla and Firefox, etc... The list goes on!

That is not the responsibility of the engineers. The product management team should specify the power vs features trade-off in the design requirements. The engineers will do thier best to design to the requirements. Even now, most laptops are designed for the latest and greatest features. Most people do simple email, word processing, etc...

It wouldn't be too hard to design a new laptop with the latest form factor improvements, but put slower components in the design. That would yield a laptop with better battery life. The problem is that many older components are not availiable as they ae phased out with the latest top of the line ones.

Where will it end? I guess it probably won't ever stop. Data mining is becoming the hot feature of buisnesses and goverments. Is it still worth the fight for privacy? If you abide by the laws, then there shouldn't be any problems.

I'm sure there are people out there that detest all the personal surveillance, but if a crime is committed and caught on tape, I think it should be used to prosicute the criminal. I personally don't want to be tracked everywhere I go, but if I was mugged in an alley, I would hope a camera would catch the criminal. It would bring some justice to me and *help* to justify the big brother tactics.

I researched long and hard to find out if my current DVD player was most compatible with DVD+R or DVD-R. It's an Apex 500w model. Turns out it's not compatible with either standard, although some online reports conflict with my findings. I eventually had to buy a new dvd player to play anything that I burned in my Liteon DVD+/-RW drive.

I can't imagine that all these new standards will work with many existing DVD players. Everyone is always playing catch-up, although all DVD movies rented from Blockbuster will always work in older models. Just getting a new DVD writer for the latest and greatest standards will result in having to buy more electronics equipment for the house. Hell, even the current +R and -R standards haven't been hashed out.

This is just an attempt by the hardware developers to patch problems made by the software developers. Ultimately in the end, we will lose performance because they are adding overhead to general processing. The software developers (or companies) should be held responsible. It's no different than trying to patch a patch a patch, etc...

This is why linux is so efficient; bugs are corrected in the kernel and recompiled for the new releases. It's a much better solution that adding code bloat or processor overhead to solve these types of issues.

Security at the hardware layer is definately important, but don't under-estimate the power of a cheap NAT router. If if you don't need one, it will still keep out many of the IP port scans and vulnerabilities. I have a linksys with logging enabled, and it's amazing to watch the port scan in real time. I'm sure most of them are from script kiddies, or people that have compromised machines. But it sure does the job. NAT routers can be picked up for next to nothing these days.

Of course it doesn't help with email viruses or attacks from the LAN side (ie, dumb users), but it helps cut down on the worm and viruses that propagate over the web.

After it was weighed and the labels were attatched and before the fedex truck came, we had a quick firmware update. I asked the shipping guy if I could simply open the box from the bottom to get the unit, update the firmware and repackage it in the same box. He said sure as long as the weight didn't change. I told him the firmware update would add a couple pounds and asked him if it would be a problem. He was pissed because he thought he would have to re-do all the shipping labels. lol

By that time, most of these techniques will be filtered down to video games, starting to show up in home-based rendering packages, etc. It kinda goes back to yesterdays article about innovation vs copying in the workplace. Make you kinda wonder what will be next.
