    Having a "stealth" box is a good thing. It makes it harder for hackers to do their evil deeds if they can't determine the operating system or see any open ports or even if the machine is really there. Maybe its ineffective against a good hacker, but the majority of script kiddies will just move along to the next ip.

    The parent was modded funny but people actually do stuff like this (myself included).

    I turn off my antivirus auto-protect among other things before running a game (i'm not to worried about getting a virus while playing something like ut2k4 or doom3). Anything that will improve performance is worth it =) (Even when I have a P4 2.66ghz 1gb ram GeforceFX 5600)

    You are only as strong as your weakest link.

    The Windows Firewall may be secure, but how secure is the underlying windows tcp/ip stack, windows itself, etc..

    You've obviously never played Doom3 single player.

    A color other than Brown might be nice as well.

    Again, you must not have played Doom 3.

    I would agree about reliability being an issue. I own a Linksys WRT54G and I have a WPC54G card in my laptop. The connection likes to go up and down all the time. Sometimes it'll just say no access point detected, even if the laptop is 2 inches from the router. I've upgraded the firmware on both devices many times and still no improvement. I've tweaked all the wireless settings on my router and even tried disabling encrypting and other security features to no avail... ...I wish I just fished some ethernet cables through my walls... Atleast its a technology that works.

    I think most people have an intutive sense that we are, indeed, alone in the universe.

    I think you mean most slashdotters are alone in the universe.

    Seriously though, I believe in life on other planets. Its just not feasible for there to be billions of planets and only 1 that can sustain life. Its a little naive for humans to think we are the kings of the universe. But we are so insecure as a race that it doesn't surprise me.

    I don't know any perl coders who make $135 a year, let alone $135,000!

    I used to work at scotia bank for my high school co-op program and I was making $1k/month writing perl scripts to make graphs (using gnuplot) from webserver statistics. Was a sweet job for a 17 year old =)

    I would have to disagree with you. I don't know much about Creative's business practices but every sound card i've ever owned was a SoundBlaster and it was great.

    The SoundBlaster Audigy2 cards are awesome. Nothing like playing mp3s or games at 5.1 or greater.

    There is no "OpenGL" of 3D audio

    Looking at the direction mobile phones are moving, I think it's a pretty good possibility that the the PDA, handhelds and Audio/Video Devices of the future will essentially be mobiles phones with these features.

    As long as they don't look like the Nokia N-Gage. =)

    I like the beastie boys. Even if i did purchase the new CD, why would I need to play it using my computer? CD players and portable players still exist. Surely these devices are uneffected by software on an audio CD?
