Anybody notice that CDs make REALLY BAD coasters? The condensation from the drink tends to run through the hole in the middle and around the outside. Then, you not only get a ring on your table, you get a wet CD which tends to stick to the drink. It also creates a more slippery surface, so the drink tends to slide off the CD. Cans are a little better in this regard, but you still get all that run-off. AOL needs to start shipping out absorbant CDs, perhaps making them from soapstone. I know it seems a little odd to state that the CDs get slippery AND sticky, but they happen at different times. Once the drink is on the coaster, it tends to stick. It's the act of placing the drink upon the coaster that brings about the whole slippery aspect of the CD-as-coaster. Also, I've found that everything seems to work better if you leave the CD in the proper drink holder on your PC. That way the liquid from condensation tends to run down into the CPU. Well, I don't suppose that's any better, huh? I tell you what I usually do is put the CD onto a larger, more absorbant coaster, thus solving the problem of water on the table. Of course, this negates the whole benefit of using CDs as coasters, because now you have to buy a coaster for each CD used. I still think AOL needs to distribute CDs made from a more coaster-friendly material. They may need another division for this.

I smoke. I have NO DOUBTS that it's bad for me and could cause an early demise. Anybody 25 and older has known this their whole lives. Same goes for eating really fatty foods, not excercising, and drinking too much. There is no secret here, and I have never lamented that the tobacco companies have 'done this' to me. I've done it to myself, and I CHOOSE to continue. I know many people who have quit...tough as it is it can be done IF YOU WANT TO. I don't, so I smoke. So yes, in fact, I think I DESERVE what I get as a result. There is NO excuse for me to not quit, except that I don't want to, and there is NO excuse for anybody else who is still smoking. We're doing it to ourselves. I know it's addicting, but that just means it's more difficult to quit, not impossible. I don't feel sorry for myself or anybody else who smokes, and neither should you. I, and many others, would not like it if the gov't forced alcohol companies to start selling alcohol-free products only...drinkers WANT it, so they should have it. I WANT my nicotine, and if I choose to buy smokeless cigarettes so that I won't be inconvenienced by a desire to smoke, that's a terrific option. If I CHOOSE to smoke regular cigarettes outside in the snow, then I have to live with my choice. I think it sucks, but then I think GW sucks, and look where we are.

I agree. I am a polite smoker. I do not smoke ANYWHERE INDOORS except smokers' homes, my home, or my car when I am alone in the thing. I won't smoke in my car when others are in it. I don't even bother asking...I just don't do it. Being in Boston means I can't smoke indoors anywhere anyway, so oh well. Where it's a health issue, I'll not smoke and not have a problem with it. The thing that pisses me off is NO SMOKING signs OUTSIDE! i'm outside...it's not a health issue if I'm outside and the smoke is getting blown away. At that point it's a moral issue, and that is not cool. I'll take my cancer-causing smoke outside so others aren't exposed, but to ban smoking outside where it is NOT a health issue is rude, inconsiderate and mean.

You know, I've only been driving for about 14 years, but when I drive, I constantly assume that nobody sees me, including those at stop signs, and I have in the front of my mind the realization that I don't want to die, and I don't want my car ruined, and I don't want to kill anybody, etc. This makes for very careful, safe driving. However, I still enjoy driving, travel at the same speed as other cars, EVEN IF that speed is above the posted limit, drive slower during heavy rain or snow, etc. I think most drivers see driving like they see walking...it's just something to do while you talk, or listen to the radio. If they had this constant sense of potential death over their heads (like they would with the steering column spike) they would be safer drivers. Of course, it doesn't help that people can drive on the roads having never experienced snow, rain, sunglare, stop-sign runners, cars pulling out in front of them, somebody weaving into them, people slying by them at 90mph on a 60mph road, people not paying attention around them, etc...as a result of POOR DRIVER EXAMS! How about some serious training before you are allowed on the road, with a SERIOUS road test every two years? Whatever...we can just continue to let idiots drive, and a few of us smarter folks will just need to be careful and look out for all the idiots. We should all drink and drive...nobody likes the idea of falling asleep and spilling beer all over the nice leather!

You bring up some interesting points. The argument has been made that speeding laws don't work as a deterrent because they don't apply to most people (thus the fishing analogy) and those that DO get caught are right back to their old habits in a matter of a few weeks, just as you said. Also, it is UNSAFE to travel at a speed other than the speed other cars are travelling. I'm a big individualist in all things except driving...the car doing 'different' things is the danger. For example, which is more dangerous on the road, that car moving the same speed as 100 other cars, or the one car in the fast lane moving at 15 mph less than surrounding traffic?
