"best practices", while corporatespeak, are the kinds of things that keep you from getting fired when it all breaks. If you want to continue to have pre-work mornings, as opposed to pre-jobhunting mornings, I recommend that you consider following best practices.
From TFA, she sounds like someone who'd be on dialup. The RIAA should thank all the people on P2P on dialup for pissing people off with long download times and making them go out and buy the CD.
Except you're likely to get considerably better audio quality with your laptop and a headset. Hell, if you could connect the cell phone via USB cable directly to the laptop at least you wouldn't have to kill your cell phone battery.
Well, if the failure mode is relatively silent, i.e. "It's just broken. I hate my computer. I'm getting a Mac.", then you haven't brought more attention to the problem.
Fail loudly, blaming the other side for their lack of concern for data security. That's the way to bring about change.
Google hired that guy away from MS with the intention of shoring up their presence in PROC. It's quite obvious that they were willing to deal with the risk for *something*.
Why would their buying of dark fiber necessarily mean they're going to carry VOIP over it? Can you imagine the amount of data they need to synchronize between data centers for their index of pages, and for Gmail? Seriously, buying 10Gbps of fiber capacity and one-time CapEx for the equipment must be cheaper than buying 10Gbps of transit from a major carrier.
Golden parachutes would usually only kick in if you retire or are asked to leave. This guy left on his own.
I'm surprised more cases like this haven't happened (or at least been publicized) in the EU, where their civil rights tend to include the right to work. I'm interested in seeing how federalism works in the EU, and whether or not there will be secessions from the Union when the going gets tough.
Radiohead had a "hit" with the song Fake Plastic Trees. Turning it into an aerofoil, however, produces less lift than some alternatives... just like the emotional response to the song.
I left HP's services organization in May, and I have to say that it was a wonderful move.
I worked for them for 4 years, and there seemed to be no interest in employee development. I was making a good salary, but found no interest in spending a few thousand a year to develop skills and interests among the talented employees. The reason I stayed as long as I did was the fact that I was on an account contracted for a long enough period of time, that my job appeared safe, but with HP, I felt like I was "playing not to lose".
Assuming they've got properly licensed MS software that came on their PC when they bought it, how many PC users do you think really think they have "msft on their back"?
When they're pissed at Microsoft, it's because stuff doesn't work. If they get pissed, and talk about it to a Mac user, they'll switch(tm). But the average user doesn't feel oppressed by Microsoft.
How many pubescents use LJ to stalk the girls who won't talk to them in real life?

With a little bit o' work, that fryer oil can run a diesel engine...

Or at least pop up a "HEY, THIS SITE IS USING 11 YEAR OLD ENCRYPTION, TELL THEM TO UPGRADE" dialog box.
Because she'll need to use gray-out instead?

Partnering is a bullshit marketing term. I don't know if you've ever worked for a multi-billion dollar company, but partnering doesn't mean shit.
For something to mean shit, there needs to be something like a joint-venture corporation funded by both parties.
Yeah, because the phrase "hit the streets" usually means a collision...
*sigh*

Do I really need to hear from my girlfriend that her robot is more sensitive than I am?
Most smaller companies' data are in Excel spreadsheets, not even SQL databases.
Don't even need to get someone to save anything as an Excel file. Just roam open shares.
It will work with most companies without a full-time IT guy.
You must be using Deskstar drives...
Well, it would be nice if it didn't stop responding when your access log hits 2GB, too...

I'm sorry, but I don't know how one could squish the phrase "clever hack" enough to make it fit this activity.
And with Linux, you don't have msft on your back.

It's not often that you read about a company's patent expiring being likely to benefit it financially. Quite interesting.
