Oh, I forgot to mention, my proposal also allows each country to re-use the current set of tlds too. You would (as an end user) rely on meta data to access the particular brand of .com you wished to view at any one time. Thats why I gave bookmarks as an example. each bookmark would contain not only the url but also the ns requirements for that address.

    I agree.
As long as each country agrees to a mandate that forces everybody to allow access to each others root servers. Each place could reuse the entire ip address space for their own "internet", but leave reserved 'global' ips (2 ips for each country) so that anybody who wished could use those global ips to seach in another countries space.

I have British Telecom as my isp at the moment, but sometimes, especially evenings, school holidays etc, lookups take too long, so I set my router to use my US based servers ns records. Suddenly the net is useable again.

I can see a time when you can use software to automatically set your ns settings according to data contained in the bookmark file (as an example for web pages).

The crucial part is agreeing to allow access to those external ips.

I don't see why this is being treated as some big political item. It's quite simple really, choose the best tool for the job in hand.

    I started with my fathers nascom homebuild machine back in the 80s, before advancing to 8086 and then 286/win 3.1 - 386/win3.1 - Pentium 1 75 mhz /win 95 - cyrix 300/win98 and se - AMD 1.4/win98se - etc etc.
I'm currently running win 98 se on a amd xp2200 with my tv card and divx encoders which is on a LAN with a sempron 2500 which runs the FC3 desktop and apache 2 server.
Any internet work gets done on the FC3 box via a kvm switch, while I can watch tv from the win98se box via the projector and 84" inch screen. I also have a Sony Vaio laptop (1ghz / win xp sp2) which serves as email backup, and video capture device (I like to use the sony dvgate software with my sony dv cam).
The FC3 box hosts my divx collection (and related mysql dbase) which can then be accessed by the LAN via an RSS feed generated from the db, and from the win98se box is effected by vlc being default player for the playlists in that rss feed.
So I can open firefox in windows, open the live bookmark for my divx list, choose, click, then watch my choice full screen (84").

All sounds like I'm wanking off over the AV side of it but it's the combination of the tools used that makes it fun. I'm a hacker ...
I also have a test box running MCE 2005 with dvb tuner but dual booting with whatever linux distro I can get to play nicely with the card :/
Thats what will cause me to leave windows behind, full support for my add on hardware. My systems are completely recognised otherwise, by FC3 anyway. It's just the damn peripherals.

Oh, I also run a few web servers with RHEL somewhere in the hurricane zone.

I guess all I'm saying is, you don't have to make a one or the other choice, be daring use both !

  16. Lets look at the bigger picture on UK's Chief Scientist Backs Nuclear Power Revival · · Score: 1
Just my observations here, not necessarily scientific fact, but based on public impressions.

    Hydro-electric :
Good - clean (once constructed), naturally renewable, not necessarily land based.
Bad - Land has to be flooded, wildlife moved (or exterminated).
Conclusion - Has to be better than coal, as it uses less toxic resources, it's naturally renewable, and the argument against flooding land is moot when you consider the rising sea levels projected by continual use of fossil fuels and emmissions thereof.

    Nuclear :
Good - Clean (once constructed), fairly large fuel reserves, good long term returns for less input.
Bad - Produces toxic waste which has to hidden/protected. Small possibility of accidents causing widespread pollution.
Conclusion - Has to be better than coal, as the toxic byproducts are contained, and can be used again. Also the returns are better for a given amount of fuel.

    Wind :
Good - clean (once constucted), naturally renewable, not necessarily land based.
Bad - Noise issues (wtf?), might kill lickle birdies, doesn't look nice, not terribly efficient.
Conclusion - It's still better than coal, even though large areas need to be in operation to generate enough power, and also there are no waste products.

    Solar :
Good - Clean (yadda yadda), (practically) unlimited reserves, no waste products, quiet, can be small (think calculator, watch, etc).
Bad - Not very efficient on a large scale and I can't think of anything else.

I think one problem thats troubling any alternative energy resource, is the fact that people dismiss them because each individual resource cannot replace the whole fossil fuel based system. Surely when combined, and used in appropriate situations, the alternatives make more sense. It has to be more productive in the long term, to localise energy prodution to the consumer of that power. Less power has to be generated to be usefully productive. Instead of huge power plants feeding a grid spanning a continent, have tiny power plants located everywhere, serving the local needs. I realise this was the dream for fusion, but it could be achieved now with natural renewables.

On another point, I see various posts describing different forms of nuclear reactor, each using different fuels, thorium, plutonium, uranium. Also it appears that waste from one type can be reprocessed to fuel plants of a different type. Well, duh ! Ok, each individual type is not going to completely replace fossil fuel, but together ....
Even the massive harmful output of coal burning which includes uranium and thorium (duh !) could be useful. If you are going to burn coal anyway, use it as a process to extract these valuable resources.

I guess my final word is this.
We worry about the environmentally _unfriendly_ aspects of contructing environmentally _friendly_ power plants/schemes, but unless we build some now, we will run out of non-renewables before we have a new infrastructure in place that is capable of taking the load. Surely if we are going to pollute, then it is better to pollute now, for the positive gain of no pollution later.
