  1. The only problems I have had moving over... on Ask Slashdot: Are You Streaming-Only For Home Entertainment? · · Score: 1

PBS, and updates to systems are my issues.

The only thing I use my TV nowadays for is watching a few shows on PBS like Mystery, Dr. Who (because no licence on Hulu or Boxee for american viewers), other British mystery shows or comedies, and occasionally local news. Basically both PBS and England have not embraced streaming video to this part of America. Bunch of licence crap.

The only other issue I have is that Boxee came out with an amazing product for a computer (desktop), then have not updated it (at least the linux version) because they have focused on their Boxee Box. Still waiting to see if they are going to drop the desktop, or move back.

  2. Inconcievable that Slashdot would let this happen! on Sarah Connor Chronicles — Why It Died · · Score: 1

I find it inconceivable that the terminator Sarah Connor chronicles show was canceled. You have Summer Glau and Garbage lead singer Shirley Manson both playing terminators, and it gets nicked before they get to start having fight scenes together. How did the slashdot crowd let this happen?

Even more mind blowingly stupid is the fact that fox creates such a great show, and doesn't sell it to say the SciFi channel or something like that. That way it could survive, plus they could recoup some costs.

Set up the tax system for business based on two things. Tax how much of their company they have in the U.S. (the portion of their company that is in the U.S. uses our infrastructure and government to its benefit), and tax how much profit they make from the U.S. (you are making money off our people and country so we get to tax that). Do that, and that's the end of any tax loop holes. If they aren't in our country or make money from our country we don't care.

  9. China epifany! Now for a Decision... on Watching China Turn Off the Pollution · · Score: 2, Interesting

I think the biggest opportunity that could be had here, besides the science, is that China's and specifically Beijing's residents will get to see what their city is like without much pollution. I hope that they come to the conclusion that they LIKE not having smog and pollution. There is the possibility, that the Chinese will demand that they want less pollution in their cities, and are willing to do what it takes to clean up their power plants, cars, and factories to do it. If only they we could do this once a year for all big countries. India, Brazil, Russia, China, the U.S., etc... We could get people really behind making positive changes.

If this service is available, how long till Law Enforcement starts using it? 2 seconds after you can say "um...".

Of course it could be used in a good way or a bad way by law enforcement. A good way is that Fire and Police could tie it into the 911 database. When a call is sent to the police or fire dept from 911, besides the map they currently get, they could get a picture of the house in question. Up here in Alaska a few years back, an off duty Alaska State Trooper died because the emergency response couldn't find the house. Maybe a photo of the house would help, letting them know if they can or can't see it. Of course the report linked also mentions how information can be misused.

A discussion should be held in the public at least adequetely putting restrictions on this if necessary.

I am an avid Tivo user, and sending this info didn't bother me once I found out they don't send user specific info. In fact, I WANT THEM TO DO THIS. Specifically I want them to send the info to both the Nielsen ratings people as well as the television companies themselves. Anything to KEEP the shows I love, and GET RID OF the television shows I hate.

In fact, as television commercials go, I want them to learn I like PBS style commercials. Whereas, the regular style of commercials are annoying and insipid. I heard talk they were going to consider a PBS style of companies sponsoring shows with specific ads, but nothing seemed to come from it. Basically PBS style sponsoring produces brand identity, typically are done in theme with the show, and come across as supporting the show you like. On the other hand regular style commercials seem to interfere with a show typically.

I really hope they send this info across, so that they bring back Futurama, and get rid of anything with David Caruso!
