This could be Googles path to get out of the China deal. At the time they made the China deal, they didn't have such a standard to rely on.

In the future when dealing with oppressive governments they can now say,
"WHOA! We are a participant in this set of rules, which we can not break. If you want Google, you have to change, not us."

Once these set of rules and agreements are out, I suspect a lot of companies will be eager to sign on, thus giving them an safety ring.

  3. Re:handle on Engineering School Grads - Tradesmen or Thinkers? · · Score: 2, Interesting

In Mechanical engineering it is good to have a hands-on project that have specific goals. At my University there are a few yearly projects you can sign onto (rocket project, ice arch, steel bridge project) but these are few, and only the ice arch is integrated with an course room instruction. I wish more projects like that were integrated with the curriculum and available. I expect to learn some similar structural information when I try to design and build my own cabin this summer.

  4. Architecture school analysis on Engineering School Grads - Tradesmen or Thinkers? · · Score: 1

It would be nice if there was a site/group that analyzed the teaching pricnicples and strategies that each architecture school used. So that you would have a better idea what sort of degree you were ending up with.

For example, I find that Archictural Engineer can mean five or more things. An engineer with building design (looks) experience, and architecht with some structure training, an usability expert, a lighting designer, or an (commonly) interior decorator. Something I think would be good if they clarified and set standards for each with a proper title.

  5. Re:Doesn't matter. on Engineering School Grads - Tradesmen or Thinkers? · · Score: 1

I wish when I set out for college they had a group/website that analyzed all the college engineering programs, and rated how much was practical and how much was theoretical. Also, how much was hands on vs. book learning. How each engineering department taught, and what they stressed for a teaching program.

Of course, I wish there was a site like that now.

  6. Practical vs. Theoretical on Engineering School Grads - Tradesmen or Thinkers? · · Score: 1

Well, there is also the difference between Practical vs. Theoretical in class room training. I kept having to take math classes that were taught "Theoretical" for all the math majors in the class. I talked to people who took the same math class from a University specializing the math classes for engineers, thus stressing the "Practical". The theoretical is good for teaching engineering professors and researchers at University, whereas the practical is typically a much better application if you enter the normal engineering job force.

Derivatives and Integrals are good for all engineers, but proofs are the food for the theoretical engineer.
"A proof? Why would I want to go backwards again?"

I find the program at the school mentioned produces thinkers, but give less hands on experience to applying it. At least compared to some of the schools down south. The thinking part is good, but it would be nice if they tied in more projects letting the students get to bite into a problem in more detail.

  11. Time for DVD on EMI Exec Says 'The Music CD is Dead' · · Score: 1

What I want to see is them move to a video format on DVDs. In addition all songs will be urged (requred?) to have a video involved. IF that means only a simple video visual music affect, fine. In this world of video Ipods, DVD players for computer, and home, how is it the music industry hasn't moved into the video age? Provide support for the old non-video systems such as radios, but its time to move forward.

If a music label wants to really get ahead, post all music on DVD's or in online music download stores. Included on the DVD or online will be a high quality music video, and a (low and high quality) digital audio track (mp3, ogg vorbis, aac, wave, FLAC, etc...). Advertise that all the music they puts out are in video, thus you are getting more than a CD. Have contest for college students to create videos for their favorite band. Thus a band such as NoDoubt might have 3 high cost professional videos and the rest on the album a bunch of cheap fan based vids. This will help the music industry compete with movies on DVD. People will feel they are getting much more compared.

  12. Tivo addiction and dissappoint on Software PVRs Becoming Tivo Killers · · Score: 1

I have used Tivo for years. I suspect if I ever leave it, it will be because Tivo isn't inovating fast enough. Its kinda funny that if you read through the forums or messages that people write, all the innovation has been though of, it just needs devloping. For example, everyone is begging for the day that Tivo finds a way to just "podcast" (or I think at that point Tivocast) television shows. It would solve soooo many problems that Tivo users face. People (or more accurately their Tivo's) could download shows when it is convienint. You could get the whole show, and not have to mess with ABC cutting off 5 minutes to combat DVR's. Much more likely that commercials would be altered so as to show in similar fashion as online content (e.g. commercials are in the beginning and the end, preserving a continuous show). Etc...

Basically they have listed over 100 ideas that all Tivo users would love to have, and are realistic in both engineering and businesswise. They just require Tivo to get off their butts and get to work.

  16. Re:Bad Size...wrong on Archos Widescreen PMP · · Score: 1

I couldn't disagree more. I'm not sure about the size overall but I think this is the start of a video revolution. If the cards play right, this might lead to the downfall one of the big music companies.

As more stuff like this comes out people will be asking "why doesn't this come with video". People will ask that all music come with video and probably on DVD's. The music companies will greet with the same fanfare they gave mp3's and this will piss people off. Then people will figure out they could make their OWN videos to songs they like with something like Flash or Video cameras, and some will start repackaging songs into video competing (illegaly) with the big companies. This will catch on and most likely Apple will get tired of dealing with the music companies and get in the game themselves. They will become a music label as well as a distributor. Then they will they put out a mandate that all songs produced by their artists have to come with a video, even if cheap an simple. They will sell on DVD or electronically and it will start to catch on, kicking the big music people in the nads. Eventually Apples competitors will try to do the same Real, Yahoo, M$, and all the various pay to download music places.

Add this in with where all the other places people will be getting used to video (vidoe voip/skype, video for cellphone calls, possible podcasting of tv for things like Tivo, etc...). A lot is coming and these little devices will play nicely into that revolution.

How about a publicly city owned coop that only owns maintains and constructs the wired infastructure for the wireless. They would build according to permits and own specification a complete fiber network connected to the internet. Then they lease use to the big internet companies to provide to you.

So in the end you pay verizon/comcast or whoever and part of that bill goes through them to pay the city coop for use of the high speed (say fiber) lines. The big company only connects the last little distance and provides you with a proper modem. The big company handles all the billing.

The result would be that a high speed internet backbone would be built in an area the big companies aren't willing to create expenditure for. Then the big companines are in a different position from a business analysis point of view. It is a boon to them where they have to do little to move into a rural area or smaller town and recieve profit. Also the maintenance of the backbone is in local hands and public controlled instead of a big company that can have shifting priorities on maintenance. In the end if played right this is win/win/win for everybody. I think this is highly possible.
