  1. customizable splash on GIMP 2.2 Splash Screen Competition · · Score: 1

I think they should set gimp to look in the app folder for splash.png. If it can't find it, it ignores a splash. Allow anyone to replace the .png file with their own splash screen.

much easier, instead of -no splash, just delete or move the .png graphic somewhere else.

this way we can have a contest winner, and all the losers can still see their graphic in the gimp. Splash screens are cool at leaast for the very first startup because they remind you you have new shiny program.

I fell over when I saw the new features of this program. this is a huge release. you can see the improvements in rendering speed and quality even just rendering a cube. The internal rendering is outstanding with this.

for anyone who has messed with it just a little but never got a grasp of using it, there are some great divx videos available on http://www.blender3d.org. With this, one can become extremely proficient, seeing somebody with skill actually use the program. 3D is hard to learn because so few people do it.

IMO this is the best release they have had in a long time. Being able to UNDO, being able to render at this quality, and having video training, there's no excuse for any highschool not picking up graphics and 3D as an elective.

Here's where this program takes off, mark my words.

  14. create your own. on Starting A Digital Art Program With Open Source · · Score: 1, Informative

First off, if you are wanting to teach, set aside time when you've learned the program to create some multimedia tutorials. Get camtasia studio and record tutorials, export them to flash. It's better and fast than writing a book with screenshots.

If you are wanting some linux movies, check out xvidcap.

It's a great idea to promote and use open source software. Some might say that those skills will have no marketability because the apps are open source and not industry standard. However, when teaching an art class and including computers, all you have to do is emphasize "Now this is free so you can use it at home. Photoshop is what most people in business use, but the same principles apply." Kids will remember that and they will pick up the right app if they are really interested in that field.

Save the money by using OSS and buy some really nice digital cameras for everyone to use. Have the kids go out and capture the world. They'll love it. Then bring the pictures into gimp, try different things from contrasts to layermasking, and painting. Create meaningful collages. If they learn the gimp, they'll pick up photoshop, and then freehand, etc. They'll be fine. I'd recommend gimp over photoshop elements any day.

Here are learning links I've found on blender. This is really a cool program to teach, but I know it will be difficult for some people to pick up. Teach them how to create a text object, write their name and render it with different light setups. Future filmmakers will really appreciate it I think.

I always hear about a Mac user saying.... well it runs macromedia, and it runs what I need. What if you don't have money for that. what if you need some screen capture software and you need specific optoins. Well, your either going to spend $$ getting it done for the single time you need it, or you are going to suffer through the inflexible screen capture. Command shift F3??? yeah I'll remember that. How about "print screen" that's a little more user friendly I think.

How about give me a different keyboard and mouse. How long will this single button crap stick around as a default purchase? Is Ilife included with the OS? Or is it extra?

I'm so sick of mac users on their high horse, convince the rest of us that we just haven't seen what the mac can do... Um, I've seen it, and it sucks.

Hmm, let me pay an extra 90 dollars for the CD burner that is compatible with Mac, because it can't understand anything else. wow, theres some flexibility.

All these people that have told me about how Mac has a command line now, you can do anything you want... I have yet to see anyone who can use it. The fact is that Mac users want Jelly and flipping windows and Adobe Photoshop. they want 3 gooey buttons to edit a video, or dump to ipod, because they don't want options.

They love proprietary. You know what my favorite thing about mac is. The fact that they trademarked a friggin trash can for their desktop. Wow, what a waste of their customers money.
