i use kmail, its set to not distract me, but i can glance at the system tray and see if there's number there (how many unread emails) plus i can set it to ignore emails for that figure from certain filters, so kde mailing list doesn't make me think i have new email, for example.
In the UK, mobile signal is great and the battery on my new phone (got rid of my motorola with colour screen for a basic phone) is looking like its going to last over 2 weeks (i got it 9 days ago and its around half power now)
In a situation where any operating system can be chosen, installed and configured (like buying windows from dell), what are the advanages of windows over the following linux distrobutions for mums and dads who want to read email, check their bank balance and read the news:
Debian Mandrake Suse Personal (or professional if you like) Vidalinux
what i would love to see is a free linux distro with spyware removal tools and clamav.
on boot up, it should
download latest spyware definitions download latest virus definitions mount all windows partitions (obviously only fat32 atm) clean them reboot
is there any anti-(windows)spyware software for linux available, it shouldn't be too hard to throw this together if there is (obviously presuming everything is free).
did you try removing the nulls, if so, did it break the format (wouldn't suprise me if they didn't need to be there for it to work, take the old frontpage as an example [i dont know about the new frontpage, but its supposed to be better]
ive tried and gave up installing mythtv on my gentoo box, there's a seperate bit in the guide for gentoo and its always much simpler than the other distro's (emerge mythtv for example)
i gave up because i couldn't get the frequencies right and i couldn't be arsed any more. im planning on making it work though...
lirc is a pita though, but im not sure how much easier/harder it is in other distro's, i just gave up with my remote (from the saa3174 chipset)
But i think linux wouln't have had as much momentum.
Before i tried linux, the reason i wanted to get rid of windows is because its crap.
Once i got used to linux i realised its not just about stability and security and now i wouldn't use windows on my desktop if it had 100% uptime and no security holes (i know 100% uptime and no security holes is imposible, before anybody points that out).
What im trying to say is, if Windows hadn't have existed the mainstream operating system(s) would have probably been better than windows is, and people like me (i assume people like me make up a lot of numbers) would never have known linux is what they wanted.
Also, i think its safe to assume that people like me* also develop software for linux which otherwise would have been time spent developing for a different platform.
*not me, i cant code hardly anything, but people who switched for the same reasons as me

AV and ClamAV
No, tree's make that noise for people's (and recording instruments) benefit.
Prove me wrong.

hmm, i never knew that.
I think we gave france back because it was full of french people and crappy little poodles. Why would you want that?
Plus the neighbours are german.
its a deamon (little helper), not satan.
there's me, so here's a quick summary:
People who would sell their souls to MS:
5999999998
People who wouldn't sell their souls to MS:

If we got to invade france, i'd sign up and i have bad asthma and a fat gut - but i'd live with it just to invade france - YEAH!!!
(i know france wasn't a colony, but its a convenient stop for tea and biscuits on the way to africa.

GWB's DoJ would let MS buy HP
Wow, thats a lot of abbr'vs
cd would do just fine, just keep the sig's in a tmpfs partition (like ramdisk but with dynamic sizing).
Internet access isn't such a big deal anymore, i think all distro's come with a really easy tool to setup dial up, ethernet is usually automatic.
obviously the dial up settings wouldn't be done automatically.

if you have kde installed there's kommander which has a norton commander style interface, and can be set into tree view
But commercial companies make money from their software, and in the spirit of the GPL, commercial companies dont benifit from the GPL.
For commercial companies its like buying MS Visual Studio, for GPL projects, its free.
I think this way is better than an LGPL project for this reason.
Trolltech are doing a good job devloping a popular toolkit and they should profit from it and this is the fairest way for them to do it.
yes, afaik everything in slackware is built from vanilla sources
The Xbox is really a software venture. All it is (basically) is a IA32 PC, crammed into a small box that looks nice.
You mispelt beaurocrats as spies.
it was a joke, who runs windows on anything to keep it secure? unless you mean secure from performance and stability.
protect against buffer overflows by using NX capable hardware, or software emulation

my point is, the Xbox is a good comsole for games, windows for the PC isn't up to the job.
How did i pay for several? ive only got the games that came with the console so far, and if i buy any more they'l be second hand.
I play games and use linux exclusively. I have an xbox.
(for the smart arses that are going to point out the xbox runs a custom win2k kernel, i know, that doesn't count)
i have alsa with a a via chipset, if your using kde do artsdsp -m quake3
(it might be -w instead, i cant remember)
