i managed to improve performance using remote displays on ssh - turn off compression (on a 100mbps network, its faster if the remote host is a crapppy PII)
im not sure if XDMCP uses compression or not, but if you can turn it off - try it and tell me
oh right. i just assumed tar was a different type of compression that further is further compressed by zip like compressions (gunzip, bunzip, zip etc)
now i feel silly. i was thinking JPEG and GIF, being two different types of image compression - it never occurred to me that JPEG is lossy, and cant be used for real data.
*bows head in shame*
mod my next post down as far as you can, because i deserve it.

konqueror is not as such, as web browser. it can do anything that there is a kpart for (such as khtml - the web renderer). thats why you can edit text files and listen to music, and view files over smb or nfs through konqueror - thats not duplication of effort. kparts minimises this a lot.
wasn't there talk recently of Sun opening up java? was that just people want them to, or was it that they were thinking about it.
If Sun opened up Java, that would mean the OSS community could "embrace and extend" Java and make it better than.NET. Java's already there, if it were to be opened up, it wouldn't mean a brand new implementation.
so i suppose these 9 different distro's use completely different kernels and exclude drivers from the official kernel? "hotplug pci" will load the drvers for you (if its a pci network card), if the modules are compiled (which in slackware, at least, every device driver is compiled as a module in the stock kernel).
i find sound card can be a pain in the arse to setup in windows XP sometimes, not in linux if the drivers exist
how easy / reliable would it be for adobe to compile photoshop with winelib. ive heard good things about winelib (that its far better than wine).
obviously pursuading adove to do this would be a bit more than a pain in the arse.

blocking keywords like p0rn, porn, virgins etc if one gets through by using words like p.o.r.n for example - does that count as enough?
i like to use cfdisk for simple partitioning - is that just a slackware tool, i cant remember having it in mandrake. if its not - use it.

if you have a different pcmci slot, try moving your wireless network card there - that might sort out the IRQ conflict
especially as coding for Mac is quite similar to coding for any other unix.
if this is microsoft licensing WM codecs for linux, this could be used in another anti-trust lawsuit.
on windows 98 it would be a variation of:
rundll32 user,exitwindows
im not on windows rite now or i'd work it out.
wouldn't "| tar vjxf " give better compression than "| bzip2" ?

shouldn't that be:
1) open non-profit distro
2) type in compile commands
3) do while x == X
4) Compile
5) Compile
6) Compile
7) loop
8) Profit
if you do make clean (which you should) before you compile, it will take longer - not a hell of a lot longer though (10 - 20 mins maybe)

i read that post to my girlfriend (not-blonde). and she said "thats nice"

there's a linux version of winrar (official too) at winrars website.
just install it (pay for it if you like) and use the functionality in file-roller/ark/xterm/whatever

there's nothing stopping the distro makers from compiling the kernel themselves and packaging it in binary format (rpm, tgz, deb, etc)
they all (/most) do that anyway, dont they?
unemployed code zealot?
doesn't linus work for OSDL?
there is one, and i think its on sourceforge, but im not sure of the name, but nss wrapper springs to mind
