    what about something that you would notice to be faster, like a kernel, or a 3d game. if you can have an extra bit of speed in something like that, just for using a different compiler, i'd take it - wouldn't you?

    this app is a "use your webcam as a security camera" program. it can detect movement, and what part of the picture is in (it draws a rectangle arounnd what moved.). would this be useful as a base to using a webcam as an input system? (its a good program, very accurate with my 30 creative labs webcam)

    heres a punishment - force microsoft to present to an individual committe, set up by the government, to approve any changes which could be dodgy (anything other than bug fixes). any new releases of windows, new "features", etc. if they dont present something dodgy to the committe, they get a huge, huge fine.

    i had this problem when making backups (large .tar.bz2's) with a default slackware install (im not trolling - i love slack)

    enable dma, mount all your partitions with noatime, if you have plenty of ram and swap, mount /tmp as tmpfs. then your laptop should run nice and smooth.

    ahhhh.

    in the uk, the NHS is the biggest employer. They are considering moving from windows to linux.

    The NHS are a run by the government - once linux desktops mature they might start recommending it to schools. If schools start using it, a whole generation will grow up not knowing what Windows is. It could become very common in the UK in the next few decades.

    there's three building blocks to painting and programing:

    red green blue (or is it red yellow blue) is comparable to itteration selection and sequence (or something like sequence, im tired and i cant remember)

    if you were to not use itteration because you used it on your last job, that would be like not using red because someone else uses red too.

    thats a bad analagy. i think this is pretty simple (think like patents - they cant be obvious):

    if its something obvious like a sorting algorithm you wrote then nobody owns it, use it.
    if its something complex like a rendering algorithm for a game engine then its whoever you wrote it for (unless they said you can use it, which i wouldn't believe anyway)

    obviously you posted as anonymous coward because you either:

    1) Dont believe this yourself, just thought you would troll

    2) ???

    one of the reasons of "sprinkling of files" is so you can find everything you want. if i want a setting, for example, i'l look in my home directory, then i'l look in /etc (home directory incase there are user specific settings for the app)

    /root and /home are different so you can mount /home with noexec (so users can execute anything from their home directory, but root can)

    /mnt is where stuff is MouNTed

    you get the picture

    probably not as fast, but its quite good considering all the features of kde - i think its considerably faster than windows XP with the best performance settings on the same machine

    kde has much more eye candy than gnome, but with it turned off (best performance setting) it runs great on my g/f's 233mhz pentium 2

    if you think gnome is too slow, use kde, or XFCE (i kinda like that) or fluxbox

    Mac is for home users, Linux is better for compainies than mac.

    also maybe theyre looking at the future. if linux ever does become main stream, and i believe it will (so do they probably), they will have made friends with the linux community, have a product that people know works on linux, and people wont just think they jumped on the band wagon when it suited them.

    Problem is, if the "linux will be mainstream one day" is as accurate as "BSD is dying".....

    tell your boss the problem with the new rule if they refuse to make an exception/provide you with pager then send all the "the server has died a most horrid death" emails to your boss. that way, he's to blame if the server isn't back up quick. (remember to tell him that you are going to do this tho)

    i was actually joking with the "dumb-ass giggly shtick", but youve never seen a stoner giggle?

    i do agree though that if your high on pot, your paranoid as fuck, so your going to be driving at about 6 mph and checking your mirrors every few seconds.

    once i was walking down the street (really really fucked) and i crossed a road conciously. after i crossed the road, i carried on walking straight on, but i halloucianated that i turned round and looked down the road i had just passed. i realised where i actually was before i walked straight into a very big road. with that in mind, i would never drive a car after smoking weed.

    (i dont smoke the stuff anymore anyway - i prefer a nice pint of tetleys bitter)
