Dropbox is doing well, really well. I'm sure most of use would be more then happy to start something up that has a paper value of $600 Million.
But no, that isn't good enough, I need to be like google.
What happened to the days of finding a niche, making some decent money and being happy? A profit is a profit. You don't get a better spot in the afterlife because you have billions of dollars instead of millions of dollars.
I watch Treasure Island remake the other day, and it got me reminding about the moral of that story. Which is greed (gold fever) makes you crazy stupid and you will bring everyone down with you during your pursuit of it.
... But it seems to me as if in our society we preferred that people stick to their decisions, rather than change their mind if there's overwhelming evidence that they've been wrong. Does it make sense?...
The conclusion from the show was that people like to stick to their first choice, even though in the Monty Hall case it shows that switching your choice is better, because it's usually right.
What I drew from this is your "gut feeling" is usually wrong and if given a chance to change it, you should.
So it's seems like a human trait not to want to change your first choice, even if the odds say it's a wrong choice.
I use a credit card for everything I can because of the rewards I earn. I've received thousands of dollars in rewards (I just received what amounts to $800 in rewards for signing up with a credit card) and cash back (anywhere from 1% - 20% per transaction, depending on the situation and retailer) over the years. The trick is to use credit cards like debit cards by paying them off completely every month. Living on credit can be stupid (most people need a mortgage to afford a house though; having a mortgage is "living on credit") but we shouldn't confuse using credit cards with living on credit. I'll use debit cards as soon as they offer rewards as good as credit cards (they won't though because of regulations as well as other reasons).
You do realize that the awards you get is less then what your paying in fees?
If you didn't use credit cards, paid everything off, you'd still end up with more money then what your doing.
It reminds me of the people that will pay a higher income tax every paycheck just so they get a bigger return. A no interest return I might add.
Credit cards are handy, yes. Using them for everything because you will get "rewards" is as stupid as paying more income tax every month so you can get more money at the end of the year.
When I flew into Brussels (yes, not USA), we then drove to Hasselt, and stopped for coffee and breakfast at a nice clean roadside "buffet" (European style, not American style). Can't remember the name, but it's a chain, nice clean place. Anyway, if you don't eat there, they charge you to use the bathroom, like half a Euro. They have an attendant there who checks your receipt or charges you if you don't have one. My American friend and I were dumbfounded. We live in the Carolinas, where pay toilets are almost unheard of, even in the city.
Weird, because where i come from (Seattle, yes, in the USA), those places say RESTROOMS FOR CUSTOMERS ONLY.
Granted they don't have someone standing there checking to make sure you bought something, but they normally do NOT let non paying customers use they restrooms. Why? Because having homeless and junkies using your bathrooms are bad for business.
And honestly, do you want to go use a bathroom where anyone can go and use it? Ya, those anyone's usually are the homeless and druggies.
For example, in Seattle, we have a place called Pike Place Public Market. And there is bathrooms anyone can use. And even though they get cleaned daily, they are gross as all hell, and I would NEVER do anything more then stand and pee there.
But don't get me wrong, I feel a city should provide free bathrooms, but the businesses in that city can charge or not charge all they want. It's not about making money, it's usually about keeping paying customers happy.
...You don't need 1080p unless you have a 60" set and you're watching it within 8 feet which I don't....
I never understood this.
Your claming that 1080p is only good if you have a 60" set and are watching it with in 8 feet. wtf?
I have a 38" 1080p TV. yes, 720p stuff looks fine on it, but 1080p really shines. Of course, it depends on the subject matter. I've gotten 1080p of older movies, ie. Tron 1982 and honestly, the 720p of that is good enough, because of the original source. New stuff? Different story. 1080p looks better on it almost all the time.
Why? Because my TV is a 1080p TV, not a 720p TV. You do understand that to view 720p stuff on my TV, the stuff gets upscaled? Sure, my TV might say it's in 1280x720 mode, but we know that since it's a 1080p TV, it's native resolution is 1080p, so everything is best view in that.
Granted I sit pretty close to my TV, because I live in a studio apartment, I spent most my time on my computer and don't have a couch. If i did have a couch, it would probably be about 10 feet from the TV. That has nothing to do with 720p or 1080p, it has to do with the size of the TV (38 inches) and where I would think the best view place was for me & others. Does it lose anything being less then 60" and at 1080p? No, not at all.
it's funny, because 5 to 10 years ago, people were happy with 26" TV's and even smaller, and suddenly less then 50" isn't good enough for anyone anymore and they make up usually a lot of falsehoods to justify their opinion.
Okay, in 3rd and 4th grades, my Dad's Wife at the time had me & my sister (story is NOT about her) go to a private school, where we were given things called P.A.C.E. I forget what it stood for, and did a small search for them, didn't find shit.
Anyways, these were books that we read ourselves, did the questions ourselves, and were supposed to be some sort of education. Sure, we had a teacher and a helper that we could ask questions for, but all in all, we had to do like 12 books of each subject to pass the year.
Anyways, fast forward to my 5th grade year, were I went back to a public school. Oddly enough, all the kids could write in cursive (not me), they knew how to do division (not me!) and were better schooled in the use of swear words (nothing to do with PACE, but more to do with being in private school).
Basicly, doing the PACE didn't teach me shit. I fell behind. I don't see much of a difference between this & using ebook readers, even if ebooks readers can actually read outload to you. Can they answer questions? FUCK NO. Are they good replacements for teachers? FUCK NO.
Tech is great, i mean, look at calculators. Guess what? We still get taught math, even though we have fucking calculators. Quick trying to put teaching children off on technology and do it like we been doing it for thousands of years. Hands on.
We need teachers. We need a lot of teachers. Sure, they can give out ebook readers for reading, a lot of cheaper then giving out text books, but to replace teachers.? Oh hell no.
DIY drones I have seen video from there of sub $1000 UAVs that will follow a GPS controlled flight path, stop at waypoints and take video towards the desired direction. What else do you want?
...I can't help wondering just how a piece of code, which presumably didn't test its input data for validity before acting on it, could become part of a modern jet's onboard software suite?
When profit is the goal of your company, you do whatever it takes to make as much profit as possible.
Could they of tested it better? Yes, very much so. Did they? Doesn't seem like it, does it?
Why couldn't they just send one upwards out of the plane of the solar system? Wouldn't that be quicker?
The reason why is in the summary.
...Light pollution in our inner solar system...
If they were to go "upwards" they still have the light pollution. By going to the edge of our solar system, you got a lot of crap between you and the closets star (the sun), plus your farther away, which should give clearer pictures/images/whatevers.
I am, of course, a stoner and not some brainiac, but this answer i give seems like common sense to me. I could of course, be wrong, and if I am, then I learn something new. If i'm not, then woot! go common sense!
Showing me that now 20 years later that hot girl I was lusting after is now a hag, and I dodged the bullet with the girlfriends I had, Two of them I though were nuts, were in fact, completely nuts. the other two turned into bull dykes later in life.
Dude, all chick are crazy, you just have to find one who's craziness doesn't set yours off.
But seriously, tech can be used for good and bad, and while it can be used by the police, it's apparent that the same tech can be used by people also. I'm sure they will scream and bitch, but will the make it illegal for civilians to use?
The ultimate example would be Bin Laden. Here is a man who is skilled in guerrilla warfare, knowledgeable in intelligence and counterintelligence, protected by zealous followers, hidden in a foreign country, cut off from the outside world, using only a contact chain for any kind of communication. However the US found him, and killed him....
Well, actually, our government claimed they killed him, then destroyed any evidence that could of proved it. That is what we call a classic coverup. Did we kill Bin Laden? Probably not, dude probably died a decade ago or so, but hey, it makes our government look good to it's people, mainly in a time when people were getting fed up.
Didn't Apple already prove this when they converted their music store to a DRM-free format? It seems like nobody around here gives them any credit for that...
They did? probably most of us don't use iTunes so we didn't know/care.
I'd rather go search used CD stores for music then buy them on iTunes.
Not only do you claim people are forcing you to read and watch things, but you act as if the fact you refuse to pay for something means you're owed it for free. What a strange position to take.
...
I don't think we're talking about the era of Stoned on a boot sector anymore. ...
oh the memories, my first infection. At the time, i was stoned, and my computer booted up and told me it was stoned, and I was like, sweet, dude...
Then i realized something wasn't right, and proceeded to infect a few more disks.
Good times!
Also, I'm am currently stoned right now. =)
Another example of Greed.

Cheap computers are a good thing for the poor people. computers might suck, but at least it will allow some people to get online.
Not that you can't find a ton on craigslist or anything.

Oh, Cedar Trail. my bad.

But it seems to me as if in our society we preferred that people stick to their decisions, rather than change their mind if there's overwhelming evidence that they've been wrong. Does it make sense?...

enough said.
Yes, Milk and Cookies, he needs to refuel his energy between stops.
If they ever perfect this technology, it still won't make it into consumer products.
2 reasons:
First being that it would increase the cost of the product, which cuts into profit.
Second, they want you stuff to break and be unfixable, so you HAVE to buy a new one.
Best use of this idea: Headphones.

but did they actually change anything?
because i haven't seen occupy wallstreet stopping anything.
it did though, give the homeless new places to sleep in the various cities, for that, i applaud them.
People with kindles are buying ebooks instead of print books? And buying ebooks that are cheaper then their print counterparts (if any?).
