you support my point. area 51 is not a joystick if memory serves correct. it is a fake gun shooting at a 2 dimensional depection of a 3 dimensional sceene (like duckhunt). the motor skills will most likely transfer in this case. additonaly it looks like some of the cognitive components did as well ;)

  5. cognitive skill will transfer, but not motor skill on Do Videogame Skills Transfer To Real Life? · · Score: 4, Interesting

americas army uses thier video game for exactly this purpose. it is a research tool to investigate if squad based virtual combat will make a soldier that accels "better" in a number of different catatgories. They are not really interested in whether motor skills can transfer. they know they dont and have plenty of research that supports this. the ability of motor skills to generalze to novel situations is well known and somewhat easily predicted. if the simmilarits of the game are close enough to the real thing then the skill will transfer. the question of what is close enough is a minute detail question. common sense can do wonders here, too much theory can muck it up. riding a virtual bike with a joystick is not a skill that will transfer to being able to balance on a bike. but chosing a good route through an envoronment will. the lattter is a more cognitive task the depends on being able to execute the more motoric task of riding a bike. I know studies have shown that general reaction time to targets is improved with fps videogame use but actual transfer of skill such as shooting (aiming at targets) from fps games to actual targets has not held up under scrutiny. you may have a better awareness of targets in a visual field but you will be no more able to shoot them than the average joe. cognitive skills transfer more readily to novel situations than do motor skills. Most of what will transfer from a video game will be cognitive unless the new task involves using a joystick or keyboard/mouse in a simmilar way.

  6. AI system from LoTR for mm games? on The State of AI In Games · · Score: 4, Interesting

was reading about the AI that was used for LoTR battle scenes. this would be a helpful tool to get a mm online game going. the startup of one of those huge massively multiplayer games makes it difficult for companys to get a foothold. the ai of the mm game worlds inhabitants has been very poor imo. much worse than a non mm game. I have yet to find AI in any game that did not just make me laugh at some point in time. halo was not half bad but still way off sometimes.

  13. use vnc and provide a simple system on Protecting Our Parents' PCs? · · Score: 1

my parents have a media pc and use it for recording because they cant figure out how to work thier vcr... if my mom misses dr phil i have to hear her problems on the phone... so i am motivated to keep their computer running. after spending most of my visits home reformating their hard drives and reinstalling everything i have come up with the following solution. I have set up vnc on their machine and i have the password to their router. i log in to their router, open the port for vnc and take care of what needs to happen. i also installed google toobar for popups. unfortuanetly i cant have them use a user account with fewer privleges because they need the media center functions which wont record if you are not admin. my next move is to use something to take an image of thier hard drive they can just install. they have a recordable DVD so i am looking into this as a possability. last time i went home thier pc had a ton of spyware. teach them a system for saving files in a certian place allways. that way it is easy to get everything back to normal once you have to reformat. if u can afford osx. then by all means do so. my wife uses it.
