It'd be great if you could burn it to VCD and watch on your TV and then pass the disc on to someone else.

But then why would you buy "Entperprise: Season 1" on DVD when it was released in the stores?

  2. Re:little old asp page on Building a Simple Streaming Media Server? · · Score: 1

I posted the code to my journal
unless slashcode broke it entirely, it should work.. three things to configure at top of script. Otherwise, it works as advertised

    http://slashdot.org/~wcb4/journal/99468

couple of things to note... since windows xp uses folder.jpg to create thumbnails for folders and uses it as album art for playing mp3, the code looks to see if that file exists and uses it for thumbnails....

If you put a file called folder.nfo or allmusic.txt (reviews or other info) in a folder, it will appear at the bottom of a folder view as well....

Its not pretty, but it works.

  3. little old asp page on Building a Simple Streaming Media Server? · · Score: 1

I wrote a little ole asp page that will allow you to flip through your directory structure, if there are no media files, it assumes it is part of the directory structure adn slows links to lall subfolders (if those folders cotnain folder.jpg, then it shows the thumbnail) this keeps going until you get down to the media folders themselves. If you have a folder.jpg there, it also shows the folder thumbnail (album art) and gives you links to all the media files in that directory (media files are defined as havign an extension that is contained in a user configurable string in the file itself) it also gives links to create a playlist in asx format (the xml file for windows media player) m3u or pls (whicha re really the same, just different mime types returned so you favorite player will open automatically) There is a drawback in asp (vbscript) in that it can not look into folders with a comma in the name.

It is somethig that I literally threw together in an hour or so and have been meaning to get back to and clean up, if only to have it spit out nicely formatted html that I can style better with style sheets, but I have not had the time.

If this is not a problem, I would be hapy to share my code with you. I use it at work to listen to music from my home computer all the time. I have never used it for video, but I don't see any reason why it would not work just as well.

I was actually an AOL subscriber back when GNN (Global Network Navigator went live). They actually opened it up to select AOL subscribers to "Beta" for them, giving free months on AOL while the beta was in operation. I was one of those users. When GNN went live, I switched my subscription to GNN instead of AOL (GNN was strictly an ISP) and stayed with them for several months before finally switching to a cheap local provider.

    There was no custom browser.

It has nothing to tdo with a "hippie" lifestyle. If money and power are your goals, then by all means pursue them. I will not claim that any other goals are more or less lofty than that goal. I have passed up many oppourtunities in the past to "get ahead" because the life that I would have to lead to do that is farther from the one that I want to lead. I don't want to quit working, but I don't want to be a slave to my commute and my job. I want to spend more time with my kids. I've been real lucky in that I have been able to stay employed throught the last few years, and I was lucky enough to buy a house in the right place at the right time. I'm now considering selling the house and moving to small town someplace and buying a smaller house, just big enough for me, the wofe and the kids, and leaving the rat race. I don't need more money, If I have a vehicle to get around, a house to come home to, and electricty and food at that house for me and the family, that is enough. I don't have a lot of money, I don't want a lot of money, but I am not going to denegrade those who do want or have it. Its a personal choice, my personal priorities lie elsewhere.

  16. Re:And the short answer is... on Experiences with Laser Eye Surgery? · · Score: 4, Interesting

The real issue with the halos at night is when the laser that is doing the correction does not correct the entire area of the cornea that the pupil covers when dialated. When you go out at ngiht, the pupil dialates to include an uncorrected area, and that causes the halo. To minimize (not completely avoid) make sure that they use one of the newer lasers, where the laser beam itself moves around to cover a larger portion of the eye. I remember when I had mine done, it was just after the "flying spot" lasers were introduced. I had a little haloing for the first few weeks as my eyes healed, but I see fewer halos now than I ever did with glasses or contact.

This being said, it was the best investment that I ever made and I would gladly do it again. When I had mine corrected, I purchased what amounts to a life time warranty. If my eyes get too bad again, I can go back in for another "flap-n-zap" and it won't cost me a cent. Cost a bit upfront (I think I paid about $2k/eye, but Its good being able to see without glasses and knowing that I can have them fix it again in 10 years if needed.

I have recommended this to everyone I know who wears glasses, especially those who, like me, wre nealry in the realm of legal blindness. I have 20/20 and 20/25 vision right now, and I would pay another $4k if need be (but thankfully I won't have to)

actually,it is in MS's interest not to do this. They *WANT* to donate fast computers and new software. If the schools get the kids using it, they will want it at home. If you give talented youths MS environemtns to use, they will find ways to develop new things in those environments, thus a whole group of kids who come up using and hacking the MS environment. They will be the ones developing in corporate environments in a few years.

  19. OLA - Open License Art on Hiring Artists for Open Source Projects? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Perhaps some well meaning geek on slashdot could develop a site where people looking for artistic talent could list what exactly they were looking for (CG folks, musicians, etc), what kind of project (game or app), what type of compensation they can offer (fame?, or a few sheckles) and some details about what they envision, and "artists" who have registered with the site can just click a link and their details are emailed to the contact for the project, or even better, artists who register could receive automatic emails if a new project is entered that matches their skill set (pick list of your skills and type of project/compensation you prefer). I would not imagine that this would take longer than a good weekend.

Perhaps some OSS advocates with a server could even host it for free, I also can't imagine that it would take a particularly large amount of resources.
