Plugged in it gave you an additional 8K of non-volatile memory, and extended basic.

I stumbled across one in a dept. store, otherwise I'd have never heard of it.

One warning; Puppy was designed for people used to Win95-98, so it's a very un-linuxy Linux.

The thought hit me that in the long run, this could actually be a benefit for Microsoft.
Over and over, I keep seeing anecdotes that Microsoft hasn't provided the requested documentation because they don't have it, at least in coherent form.

Now they've been effectively slapped up back of the head and told to produce it, and make it available to everyone.
Note: "Everyone" includes their own programmers.

When the proper documentation becomes available, I'll bet a lot of in house programer's reaction will be either "So THAT'S the way -FOO- works!" or "Damn! that's a brain dead way of doing -BAR-, this way's better."

So it wouldn't suprise me, once the dust settles, to see Microsoft improve. Who knows, the next version of Windows might only be two years late.

Um, how about a fully documented set of APIs for third party developers?
MS won't (maybe even can't) offer it, but Reactos does.

And if you read their wesite (www.reactos.org), the ultimate goal isn't to be a Windows clone, but quote:

"Once the compatibility level has been reached, we may even choose to improve ReactOS beyond its Windows roots. These changes would be external from the main OS, and totally compatible with Windows, but they would add an extra advantage. For example, one of our goals is to have built-in POSIX compatibility, much like Windows Services for Unix. It could also be as simple as natively supporting multiple desktops however, instead of requiring a powertoy."

In other words, Reactos' goal is to be a proper OS in its own right, not just Windows compatible.
(One day, Windows may even struggle to be fully compatible with Reactos. Heh, one can dream, eh?)

Thing is, most of the people using an old windows OS are casual users, and as long as they can read their text files, browse pictures, and access "the internet" they don't care what's running, as long as it works.
