What we need is for a high-traffic site (ex. Google, Ebay, Yahoo, etc) to make it so their page will not load completely in browsers that do not meet standards like these. I'm thinking a page that says "Your browser (Internet Explorer) is not XYZ compliant. Please upgrade to a browser that follows accepted standards, like firefox, opera, etc" with a link that would take you to the page anyway.
I know that this would take a lot of balls on that company's part but action like this is the only thing that Microsoft is going to understand. The first big site to do it would lose some amount of visitors but it would also generate more non-IE users and pressure on MS to follow standards. Eventually MS would wise up and comply as the amount of people switching away from IE becomes too large to ignore. The end result is that either IE will be made compliant or it will lose some of its dominant market share, both good things.
Buck Rogers builds a duplicative liquid synthesizing machine. Whenever you pour in a sample of any liquid, it can produce an unlimited quantity of that liquid for very low expense per unit of liquid.
Now I legally purchase an ounce of Pepsi, pour it into the machine, and cause the machine to produce 1000 gallons of a liquid which is indistinguishable from Pepsi. I drink some of the produced liquid, and sell the rest.
The difference between your analogy and p2p is that if you sell your liquid you are taking more sales away from Pepsi and probably making a profit. I believe a better analogy would be if you just bought the ounce from Pepsi and then just make your own whenever you are thirsty, or share it with your friends.
I do agree though, it is time for some serious changes to US Copyright law because the current model is getting ridiculous and screwing us comsumers. I cannot wait for these dinosaur organizations like the MPAA and RIAA to go extinct.
Hate to be nit-picking, but it is the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Don't ask me explain how that works or what the difference is, but IIRC there are 3 others.
The fact that OSTG owns Slashdot and Newsforge is less of a plug and more of a disclaimer. Its just letting you know the article being linked to that seems to be completely separate is not in fact from a completely independent entity. There is nothing more pathetic than seeing a supposedly unbiased article only to find out that the author praising product/company Foo is a yesman working for their PR staff. The disclaimer is a good thing. I wish more "corporate giants" were open enough to reveal when their may be a conflict of interest.
So is the movie going to be T's and CT's randomly inserted into a building somewhere, so we can watch them run at each other shooting several hundred times, complete with insightful commentary such as "ph34r me n00b" and "gay haxxor turn em off" and other gems of the 13 year old online experience?
Can the ending be people going to said 13 year old's house and beating the crap out of them? Please?
Does it matter that some copies of firefox/opera are set to be detected as IE, as this was the only way to get certain websites to work without using IE? Would a copy of firefox that is spoofing IE be counted as IE or firefox?
There is quite a difference between saying that you could do it easily and doing it. This guy took some time on his idea and it turned out pretty cool. If it is so easy, make your mod ten times better, and you can get your own/. article about how kickass yours is.
I would think that most people could not tell you what RFID is, but if you showed them a RFID unit inside a DVD case or something they would probably say "Thats the thing that beeps when you try to leave the store with it."
No. Fuck them and their DRM bullshit. This has gone on long enough. There is only one thing these people understand and that is their bottom line. If we want to stop this encroachment on our rights as consumers then we have to take a stand and hit them where it hurts. Just like I am not buying another CD until the RIAA backs off, I refuse to purchase any DRM media of any kind, and I hope that enough of you will join me that we can put these theives out of business.
You have bought into their marketing bullshit my friend, filesharing cannot be "wrong", as it is simply the technology that allows people all over the world to share files between each other.
Now if you are talking about copyright infringement, that is a whole different ballgame. Please do not confuse the two.
I use it mostly when I cheer on my UMass Lowell Riverhawks at Hockey Games...and when i check my student email... and when I walk to class... and..oh wait, is that not what you meant?:P
This is a good example that could be used against all the outrageous patents that are being granted. Because IE, Firefox and Opera are all competing, every of the browsers have to bring something new to the table (whether it is more secure, faster, easier to learn,...) in order to be successful. Patents do not foster innovation, competition does, and it's about time the law started reflecting that.
2 guys that work for Microsoft talking about Microsoft vs Linux? Please. We need to get Bill Gates and Darl McBride tag team vs Linus and RMS. All in the same room together with chairs and bats for when the violence breaks out, and we can stream it to the web so the debate can finally be settled once and for all by a giant ass-whooping. Just think, Linus and RMS could throw $20 on the floor and Gates and Darl would scramble after it and fight each other for it, while Linus and RMS let the beatings commence. Yeah, it might not be the most professional way to solve things but it would sure as hell be more entertaining.
Boy the things that pop into your head while reading an article this long...
You sir have piqued my interest, I must find an old NES for I am now inspired. How exactly would one know which wire connects to which parallel port pin?
Re:Seriously... Why would you use this?

GIMP 2.2 Released
·
· Score: 2, Informative
The GIMP is a very powerful tool that I love, but even I will admit that Photoshop was a lot easier to learn and has many more options. However, there is one benefit of The GIMP that I am surprised more people don't point out:
Yes you can get the cracked version all over the web but to truly compare the two you need to compare the legit versions. I for one will take TheGIMP and $650 in my pocket anyday.
Don't forget "bling bling"! My English teacher nearly had a heartattack when I showed him this :)
C'mon man, everyone knows that mushrooms come from bashing your head against flashing boxes with question marks on them. ;)

Why does CherryOS even bother?
$$
That's all that people like them see, and they don't care what damage they do as long as they get their sacks of money. Sad, but all too common...
Adopting the broadcast flag early, are we? :)

a goat-lion-serpant or a girlfriend with the head of a shark
Ok, a goat-lion-sepent I can picture, but what is this other creature you refer to, the 'g' one? What is its challenge rating?

Step 2?
No you don't - The spammer who collected all 500,000 names is strapped in right next to it ;)

The warm fuzzy feeling alone that you get when you hang on TV on your wall like a picture I think makes up for the lower picture quality.
:)
Although if you got an old-style TV, I guess you could replace your table with a pile of money and break even
...filesharing -is- wrong, IMO...

By 2010 corporations will have patented every possible thing that humans have done so by 2045 when they all expire we can get on with progress.
;)
I would hope that asteroid deflection/destruction is not patented, you know, just in case
1) Get off our island earth and spread. Mars?
2) Create powerful space based energy weapons to destroy this big rock.
3) Profit?
