the beeb has started to suck big time over the last few years:

#1: over reliance on ideas that prove popular. docusoaps. house makeover. garden makeover. crappy one off dramas. long running dramas. Comedies starring people famous in other comedies, no matter how bad the new show is. Horizon is now an excersize in nice camera angles and talking about the personalities of the scientists than talking about any theories they have.

    #2: new digital channels
they suck (apart from about 10% of BBC4), they eat money and have no viewers. Crikey, they interrupted a film last night on BBC3 (the only way that channel gets *any* viewers is to put on films that should be on the main channels) with their crappy 60 second 'news' which is celeb obsessed. I mean for 60 secs of unimportant news, couldn't it wait until after the film?

#3: BBC website. Eats money and most of it has nothing to do with the beeb. it in fact stifles creativity in the private market as they have money to burn.

#4: because of #2 & #3, it's repeat central on BBC2. excellent, another repeat of 'Porridge'? rather than trying out some some stuff?

really its getting to the stage that im going to scrap tv. i already stopped paying for sky as its full of rubbish. there is nothing I make time to watch.

This may be news to them out there but WE DONT BLOODY CARE WHO PRODUCED IT AS LONG AS THE FILM IS GOOD. One film I saw I think had 4/5 idents at the start. and they are all so damn awful.

Do they think that anybody takes notice of the warnings or doesnt know that it is illegal? why not have a new CD format that forces you to listen to an audio warning and some crappy idents before listening to a CD. If that seems mad and unacceptable, why is this so different from DVDs?

Ep 4. Wonderful. This was the largest grossing film, (next to Gone With the Wind), for a reason

yeah the reason was there was *nothing* like it. Nice story but the directing and script are total pants. ok i could forgive than in 1978 when i was like 6, but not now. I can't watch it now as I cringe at all the really appaling lines in the film. In fact those were the bits that needed changing for the new editions, not the SFX!

no movie with crappy acting and bad dialogue is great, no matter how good the storyline or SFX. part of the point I was trying to make was that the reason so many people do idolise movies with crappy acting and dialogue is that there is a complete lack of anything better in this genre.

    which is a real shame.

unfortunately though because this genre is popular and because there aren't really that many films made 'in space' if you like, we all fall upon them like slavering dogs and they make money.

not until we turn our nose up at these dogs dinners will things get any better.

but then again this is almost all the high budget film industry isn't it!

  11. its just a shame on Star Wars Episode III Spoiler Photos · · Score: 5, Insightful

SW is a nice idea just apallingly badly done most of the time. The only reason we get so excited is that the sci-fi film genre is *so* badly served with horrible derivative works it makes SW seem ok.

kudos for Lucas for originally having the sage storyline and hiring some damn talented designers to put a unique feel on the films and superb effects for the time. And great music. But if he gets too far involved, it just sucks. Sorry George.

    quick summary:

Ep4: poor directing, awful script, okish film
Ep5: good! somebody else writes and directs (take the hint please)
Ep6: Ok film, somebody else directs. bad dialogue is back thanks to georgey boy working on the screenplay again. story rear ended for commerical gain by adding the ewoks

Ep1: Atrocious. Hes back writing on his own and DIRECTING. Dammit george you were not very good to start with and its been 22 YEARS since you last directed anything. story again rammed in the chocolate starfish with the commericalisation of the pod racing scene (which takes up about 50% of the film it seems). pick a totally appaling actor for annakin. Take some of the best acting talent and turn them into cardboard with bloody awful directing and bad script. Hell I can't even remember what happens in this film apart from the pod race.

Ep2: A bit better, i.e. watchable. Script a bit better as hes working with somebody again for the screenplay. again choose an awful annakin. Whats now odd about this is that I can't think of a single point without music in the film. probably why the film seems better as the great music can actually make you feel the emotions that the script and directing cannot.

I don't know why he returned to the writing/directing roles, surely he realised that 5&6 were better than 3? Why couldn't he have turfed the directing/screenplay over to better people? He could have kept his repuation as a god, and become a benevolant god at that. What possessed him to do it?

To leave on a positive note, at least nothing else looks like star wars, it's too 'in your face' to copy. Unlike Alien which although a great film, every spacecraft interior now looks like it's out of Alien and unfortunately it seems a hell of a lot of stories just copy it as well...
