Is it me or does this patent have a better claim against tabbed browsers then an OS?
Ok after reading the thing, it does seem to apply to some prior art, IE the old mac control panels, that did come about in I think system 4. This also seems to at the core not to have even be patentable due to the non obvious clause?
"If an invention is not exactly the same as prior products or processes (which are referred to as the "prior art"), then it is considered novel. However, in order for an invention to be patentable, it must not only be novel, but it must also be a nonobvious improvement over the prior art. This determination is made by deciding whether the invention sought to be patented would have been obvious "to one of ordinary skill in the art." In other words, the invention is compared to the prior art and a determination is made whether the differences in the new invention would have been obvious to a person having ordinary skill in the type of technology used in the invention."
Too me this seems pretty obvious even in 1987 when it was filed. Sure it is dressed up allot but look at some of the UI docs...

So you were probably wondering why we didn't want to commit to two player co-op online over Xbox Live. We certainly got plenty of mail asking, no, demanding that we make it happen. Of course we were working on it, but we were also working on something better. Not two player co-op. Not three-player co-op, but up to four player co-op. Online. On Xbox Live, or sure, System Link if you prefer.
That is correct - up to four player co-op in Campaign mode on Xbox Live or System Link.
So the way a DNA sample is taken and stored by law enforcement, cannot tell anything about a persons medical history past present or future, it is just a more detailed fingerprint. People argued about storing fingerprints too when they where first, people react way to emotionally about this when they do not know the facts. Britain which uses the short tandem repeats (STR)Analysis cannot tell anything about you, nor is the data stored able to be recreated into something else.

Plasmids
At this time there is no reason to really ever use anything other then the electrical plasmid and sometimes the telekinesis plasmid. This system should have been genre changing see level and monster design for more info. The telekinesis plasmid should be as great and as effective as the physics gun in HL II but ends up being a poor imitation. If I pick up a table or a metal object why is it not an effective bullet shield?
Level Design
You would think that the level design would force and encourage the use of other plasmids some levels the ice or fire would be more effective, then just using the electrical one. This would have been a great way to encourage the use of other plasmids. Physics puzzles for bonuses anyone? HLII used physics puzzles effectively, and so far no one has done it. Bioshock has the mechanic to do it but strangely did not.
Monster Design
For the most part there are 5 monster types in the game that just gain more power or a few abilities to make them more difficult. This would have been the easiest way to make the plasmid system way more effective some monsters have different resists. Why are there only 2 variants of Big Daddies? There is no technique or skill needed to kill them they are just damage tanks, put enough damage into them and they die. Why do they not have different weaknesses on different levels? Why does level design not encourage anything more then a run and gun to kill them?
What was done right
Great looking game, with a great story arch. The game feels very non-linear (while it is.) Sound and VO is excellent. The over all art direction is unparalleled in FPS's. Oh and a blast to play! Which is the most important. Do not get me wrong Bioshock is a great game, but they set out to change the way FPS's are done with the plasmid system and just did not fully realize the implications of this feature set.
It is only a matter of time until google officially went into this space, I have been saying for about 2 years that this was going to happen. With gmail activation requiring cellphone sms, and the Dodgeball purchase a year or 2 back. IMHO Google soon will be making a huge push into voip and telephony and the investment is just going to get bigger and bigger. I think this is the first big push.
This is not a tinfoil conspiracy issue. I actually run support for a large MMO. You need to have policies in place to prevent admin abuse of tools/authority. A play account is a personal account and should never receive any service different then a paying account from a non employee. There are many reasons for this, mostly it is a cultural choice to prevent slipping down that slippery slope.
Oh I will just resolve this issue on my account really quick it hurts no one.
Well my corp lost a few ships from a bug issue that was kinda unfair so I will reimburse my corp the cash.
This guy totally bent the rules over and over again and kept podding my corpmates I will ban him.
I call this all a separation of church and state, and CCP is having issues with this right now there is no way to deny it. The fact that the largest corp in the game has a large percentage of CCP devs and support people, and this is known is baffling to me. Look at WOW it has way more people on the project and way more players, has anyone heard of Dev or Gm clans or any players getting special treatment from the support department?
How come a Gm gets his complaint answered in 1 day as shown via the CCP thread they posted. I had this same issue and it took me over 1 month to get a response from CCP at this same time. Every ticket me or my corp enters takes over 20 days for a reply. This account which they acknowledge as a gm account got serviced in 1 day.
so no favoritism there. Sure this Gm may not have been able to take actions on his own account and had to place the petition to get the issue resolved, he still received favorable treatment, which is a violation of CCP's rules. A customers issue should be resolved in order not by who knows who or who is in what corp....
This only affects MS games, not everyone else. Name one massive hit that MS games has put out. Sure MS Flight Sim is huge in its niche but people that play this game are already hyped to shell out more money to improve their experience. Where is MS's killer FPS? (ok Halo II but that is a port that should have been done 2 years ago they sand bagged it for Vista) MMO that did not fail? I am in the Industry on the PC side and really this is nothing. This whole Live thing on the PC is just a way to make it look like PC gameing is still viable. Look at dollars spent PC gaming is not dieing, just shelf space, as EB/Gamestop reduces PC shelf space because their profit model does not work with PC's just consoles. They want people to buy, return for minimal credit, then resell at a slight discount from the New version. This just does not work with PC software.
The future of PC games is online distribution. Why make a gamer that is already on the internet go to a store, they read the game news and reviews online, they can buy from an online retailer or direct download from Steam or Direct to Drive like services.
Microsoft is just feeding the feeling of PC games going downhill to pimp out this live service that no-one really cares about. How many gamers are on Vista with the game compatiblity problems, and performance hit that appears on Vista vs XP....

This feature has been in the source engine for awhile. In fact it is used on 1 map for Counter-Strike Source. On the map cs_Havana, there are 3 routes from the CT spawn to the Hostages. On this map there are 6 choke points that may or may not be closed always allowing at least 1 path to the objective. Funny thing is this map is rarely played, and this feature is somewhat un-noticed by the players.
Granted what they are going for seems a little more ambitious for TF2, but feature like that are what internet based FPS's need to progress and become better. TF has also been one of the few FPS's that truly utilize height in map making, something that is lacking in most CS maps...

I am constantly amazed at how bad the AI is in this game, after years and years of developement you would think that the Ai would have developed alittle more. While very advanced in speech capabilities, the AI relies on taunting you by claiming you are a noob, cheater, or a camping f**ktard, and will even call you GAY. In game play the AI is still weak and just does the same thing over and over again, and will constantly be baited into sticking its head around a corner, or runs into flashbang grenades on a very regular basis, failing to learn from its past and how it got owned over and over. Finally the AI deems you are a cheater and runs to load another AI called an Admin that will ban you because it cannot understand how you are so much better then it.
I have been waiting for this for awhile, Google has at least two initiatives involving Cellphones. Gmail currently uses sms auth, to create accounts, giving google a nice database of phone numbers tied to gmail addresses. They also have the dodgeball service that they quietly purchased a year or so ago.
I helped start a computer leasing company, and was tasked as the network manager for the majority of my stay. This was about 7 years ago and we needed to create a database of all inbound leads (calls) We put in about 800-1200 records a day with about 40 fields (non-realtional.) I pushed for either filemaker or sql database. Unfortunatly I was turned down and told we need to use access as all the computers in the office had an office suite that included access. They did not want to spend the extra cash for filemaker lics, or an sql programmer. About 1.5 years later low and behold the access database goes to hell with records being lost and performance of the db tanking.
I get called into a board meeting and proceed to get chewed out for allowing this to happen. After about 10 minutes of being yelled luckily I came prepared with a copy of the email from a year and a half ago stating that access was not a solution for our scale of business and we would have problem after 1 year of use. Walked out without saying a word.
About a week later I was informed that we had a contractor to move the access of to sql, unfortunatly I was not allowed to interview mostly due to the previously mentioned board meeting...
Turns out the contractor was a bro and thought you could just migrate an older access db stright to sql... after monkeying around homeboy worked on the live DB and corrupted the whole thing. Apperently his expertise did not expand to working on a copy of the database. I get a call saying that we lost the whole databse and that it was my fault. Apperently Joe Newb had also never heard of backups and tried to blame me for the fact that he tried to migrate (the wrong way) the live database and blamed me for the whole thing.
Came in loaded the backup and kicked the guy out of the building... I left soon after this, as the company was rapidly going downhill for a multitude of other reasons.
Laws require proof of age to be in a bar, this can be provided with a valid ID. As an expired lic is not a valid for of ID. In addition In some stats (CA) new DL's are passed out every 2-4 years, and at ages 26/18/21. You have a friend with a passing resembalence that just turned 21 got the new ID gave you thier old one and now you are underage with a DL that you can pass with, to bad it is expired, which most bouncers do not check for.
These yellow boxes are old hat in California and have been around for at least 10 years. While they check the DL to make sure the mag strip matches the info, they are not storing any info. Why do they do this? They are there to prevent fake and expired ID's. If a DL can pass this yellow box then it is a real DL and not a fake, this is a way for the bars to make sure no underage patrons or patrons without valid ID (expired) are in the house. I have never heard of this data ever being pulled out of the little yellow boxes or even the ability to pull the data. I went to a junior college with a guy that started this company, and I have seen them very often in the past 10 years in Southern California.
