Looks like someone (ie Bungie) is staging a rampancy. Rampacy is what happened to the AI's in the Marathon game. Ie they broke lose from the safeguards imposed on them and went wild. The new black box looks very very similar to the console info in the original Marathon games when Durandel went wild. Bungie has a highly evolved back story for their universe very similar to Larry Nivens known space universe. Niven also wrote the book Ringworld, in which more then a little bit of Halo cribs from. Halo = ringworld. If I remember correctly back from the original marathon back story we are right about the time the first AI went rampant, on earth. I think it was an accidentle ai not created by man but from the interconnectedness of computers. AI's have always featured prominantly in Bungie games as plot conveyers, and info distributers. Here is partial list of Marathon backstory, that also ties into Bungies first fps title "Pathways into Darkness"
    AI history
It is imcomplete but does give some more info. Bungie has admitted that Halo fits in the Marathon/Pathways universe but until now has not tied it together. Many insignias and parts of the game are stolen from Marathon. A good discussion on Marathon/Halo connections
I have always been a Marathon fan as I have mention in previouse posts, as many game play feature predated many pc fps titles for a few years. Unreal Tourny did not invent king of the hill, tag, or kill the man with the ball. These had been around on Marathon for a few years. Bungie also allowed people to mod the games and gave tools out to make maps change graphics, and physics way before people started modding games on pc's. It is unfortunate that one of the most ground breaking FPS titles was on the MAC and gets so little recognition. I still lode up marathon games sometimes and reveal in the map design and story. I feel as well as most people that have played the marathon series that Half-life's story line and maps pale in comparison to what Bunigie did on 1995-1999.

    Just my rant...

So using apples freely available resedit program you could mod almost any game for sound and graphics, then do a res compare and make an installer for your custom mod. Many people did this with the Marathon series from Bungie (the precurser to Halo) and moded games even before they where called mods. Granted the programmable pixel shaders are in the right direction, but we need more functionality. For gameing it seems redundant, wether or not you have these you will still have to upgrade in 2 years, when the next dx hits or what ever new architexture comes out. I personally never spend more than $220 on a video card. I got a 4200ti ($180) when alot of gamers got 4600 ($450+)for 10% more speed and 3 times the money. 1.Since this camera was announced we knew it would be hacked it was just a matter of time.

2.Canon knew it would be hacked.

3.If you only knew how many times products are crippled/disabled and priced lower so that high end stuff still sells? anyone remember 3.5 single sided floppies? Companies do what is in there own best interest.. err in the stockholders best interest. Do some of you really think Canon is doing this to pull one over on you? No they are doing what will make the most money for their shareholders.

4.I think the anaology to overclocking is not valid. Chips are clocked at set speeds becuase they are stable at that speed, If AMD/Intel sold the 2.4 rated chip as a 3.0 which it is in some cases IDENTICAL, people would complain since the 2.4 rated chips can't really handle those speeds and crash. AMD and Intel love overclockers cuz they buy more chips then anyone else, since they fry things all the time.

5.All in all this will not really affect 10d sales, for all the reasons listed above, stability, ability to interface with higher end equipment, better case, higher quality parts, and certain features that the 300d can't so at all.

6.300d sales will go up since this just became the geek camera of the year.

Also on a side note no one has mentioned that people have been hacking the Canon lenses to get more f-stops and zoom out of them for awhile. Canon restricts some lenses since the quality becomes adversly affected at min and max. So some people have removed the stops and taken the quality hit for more versitility.

Since few of you are/where Mac gamers. In 1984 Bungie released Marathon. This very very early precusor to Halo, introduced so many things to the FPS genre. Many features on this mac game took years to come out on the PC. 8 person network play. Dynamic lighting. True 3d aiming unlike Quake, (not first implemented in Dark Forces as previously mentioned.) Decent AI in monsters. Fully mod-able from textures, models, maps, sound, storyline, and physics, either by resource haxs or Bungie supplied editors. These games are still being moded and even have been ported to linux/unix with upgraded graphics. 8 player networked games had many modes, from kill the man with the ball, king of the hill, tag, Free-for all, and team versions of all of the above. Any fps player that ever played 1 of the 3 Marathon games will tell you how amazing the storyline and map design was. Marathon featured a very in-depth story that IMHO has not been bettered, with maps that had puzzels or different variables to break up the kill rinse repeat cycle found in so many other early FPS's. Where was Doom compared to all of this?
Bungie gets little respect in its role as a pioneer in FPS's as Pathways into Darkness was released at almost the same time as Wolf 3d.
