  1. Re:fp on Music Downloading not Entirely to Blame · · Score: 5, Interesting
I buy used CD's, I buy albums direct from the band at concerts, and I buy new LP's direct from my favorite independant labels like Saddle Creek and Jade Tree I have bought about 20 albums in the past year, and I'm sure none of them show up on the RIAA sales records.

oh yeah, I have also purchased a dozen or so random songs on iTMS. IIRC, legal digital downloads aren't counted are album sales, so they can bitch about how cd's don't sell, but millions of albums a week are selling on iTMS.

Its time for the record companies to stop fighting the future and adopt a new business model.

Marijuana vaporizers, which heat up the pot enough to realse thc but not enough to produce much tar or smoke, have been around for a while.

THe exciting thing about this product is that it is small enough and inconspicuous enough to use like a normal cig, but without the smoke.

The current nictone subsitutes (gums and patches) are really expensive, so this could be a much more afordable way to help addicts stop putting gunk in their lungs.

On their recent tour, the Pixies offered CDs of the show recorded and mized live to fans walking out the door. I could see a kiosk at concert venues allowing fans to downlaod the night's show to their iPod. It would proably be faster than burning CDs. A phone both however, is not something I currently associate with music, and I don't thing it would catch on, but i buy most of my CD's at concerts, where I know the money is going to the artist. Apple is going to realse a U2 special edition iPod next week, and is rumored to be working on A sub $200 flash player. How long till digital complete overtakes cd's?

SAP would be a useless assest to microsoft as the merger spent years in the european courts, and if it ever got out of court, much of the value of the orginal merger would have been lost.

It was spooky just go up to a console, insert a card and hit a few buttons. It didn't feel like voting.

As bad as the old punch card system were, I liked the feeling of knocking out a chad, and then being able to see an actual physical representation of my vote.

With the amount that counties are already spending on these machines, it can't cost much more to add a printer.

I am a certified geek, and I love my bikes (I have about 6) For me tinkering on a bike is more fun that tinking on a computer. Bikes are very simple machines, but they require a lot of work to run perfectly. Bike are also high tech. Forget the old schewin cruiser you rode as a kid. todays bikes are made out of things like titanium and carbon fiber. The cycling industry actually perfected the manafacturing of carbon fiber. Car makers are begining to adobt it, the new sony ultalight laptop uses it, and there are rumors of apple using it in their new powerbooks. I'd love to have my laptop math my bike. Bicycles are the most efficent form of traspertation out there. As a geek, you should admire that. My only problem with bikes is that the nearest Fry's isn't close enough to ride to.

  22. What about vinyl on RIAA Loss Report Contradicts Nielsen Sales Record · · Score: 1
I wonder if tapes or vinyl are counted...

I am a music geek and all the music I buy is pretty much vinyl. claiming "fair use" I download stuff to my ipod so I can listen to it in the car. I only buy CD's when it is stuff that I can't get on vinyl and can't find it to download. In the past year I've bought about 15 records and 4 cd's.
Not a single CD was an RIAA disc, and maybe 2 records were.
Prior to having a cd-burner/broadband, I would buy about 20 cd's a year, and about 1/3 third of those were purchased used.

Almost all independent labels worth their salt put their stuff out on vinyl. My favorites are Fat Wreck Chords, Jade Tree, and Springman.
You can also find mainstream stuff on vinyl. Recently I've picked up System of a Down, Radiohead and Sublime.
Best Buy and Wal-Mart of course, don't carry vinyl and they sell their cd's at pretty close to cost. The make it up by selling you CD players, and batteries to run your CD player. I buy most of my music at independent retailers like Amoeba Music or online. Most Independent labels sell full length records and cd's for $8-12.
Call me a thief(I have 50 gigs of mp3s), but I feel like I have supported artists who deserve it. I will never pay $18 or even $15 for a cd.
