Just seeing the mirrors, it appears to me that, away from all these 'supposed' legal considerations, the amount of bandwith used by the google front page could be quite twice as big than now! It's not a little deal, when you have such a site...
So far, it's very simple. But it needs a lot of paper. Really. I began to do like that in a time where I didn't had so good backup solutions... I stopped after around 500 pages. That's not 'that' handy. It's expensive, and very big. Sure, it's then much more stable than any other electronics storage ; but then you lose all the rapid search capabilities that make the email so convenient...
Well, you need to learn some things about German trains.
First, they have the monopoly too. There is only 'Die Bahn' for the people who want to travel by train. For a few years, this is only going more expensive. Most people are searching for alternate solutions, despite the fact that they are very commited to protect environment. The alternates are : cheap flight (German Wings, Ryan-Air,...) or "Mitfahrgelegenheiten". This is a system where people who go by car from one point to another can get connected with another people who don't have a car, and are willing to pay to go with the first person. So the one who has a car pay less oil, and meet someone, and the other can travel for a very interesting price (a few Euros most of the times). But no one is willing to take the train anymore in Germany ; some still do however, like me. But only when I really have to !
Die Bahn should rather see what now does the french train company SNCF, who propose cheap trains travels to fight the cheap flight companies...
And I'm sure most people in Germany (I mean, non slashdoters...) would rather like to have cheaper tickets than wifi in the train... For people's knowledge, Munich Berlin 2-ways can costs more than 200 Euros (8 hours of train)... By plane it costs no more than 100 Euros when you're unlucky, and the flight itself is only 45 minutes...
You're completely right. Redhat simply forgot that all the people that brought Linux in the corporate world were all geek that had already a big experience of Linux at home, on their personnal desktop.
Well, I didn't write it to make such out of place remarks. I just only wanted to point out that the content of this list is not accurate ; or rather could I say, this list is more a ranking of the best-know or most-loved hackers than of the best ones.
... Well I don't know if all these animated Flash ads are a real progress in the computer world... But Flash surely makes more money to the author of the article than Knuth's researchs !!!
Half of the/. readers could write a better list. Don't deserve an article !
Sure. But I didn't want to legitimize this. This is simply something that one can observe.
Another thing is that you sometimes look like dumb when you're with friends who have heard all the albums of the artists they're talking about, and you not because you don't want to download or copy. This is a something like a social pressure that counts.
Many people download even music they don't like, because if they make a party, they will sure have the favorite song of each guest ! As I said, it's not possible to limit this phenomen to only one or two causes.
The "if you can't afford it, live without it" is not a sentance that the 15 year old can understand (I don't have any cell phone for years;) ). We live in a world that gives too much importance to consuming. It's really difficult to resist, wathever people say.
It makes me always laugh to see all this people pretending that the music sales decrease comes from the downloads from the Internet. Young people simply don't have a extended budget. Ten years ago a normal teenager didn't have to pay 50 dollars a month for his mobile phone. This is the price of 4 CDs ! Some of us didn't even had a computer too ! These are all things that makes that we CAN'T buy more CDs, because we have less money for that. Sure, this is only a part of the explanation, but I don't see much people who invoke that argument.
What's bemusing to a European eye is that it seems to be the places which are most likely to be devastated by global warming that are most likely to vote for Bush.
And what about the 15000 French dead because of the very hot summer last year ???
I bought an ATI card an then saw it was not compatible. Then I send gave it back to the place I bought it, and ask for exchange with an NVIDIA. This was so easy to install ! But the 15 dollars I lost in it will make me remember not to buy an ATI one more time.
They don't have any 64bit drivers -> they will soon see the consequence of that on their business !
Right. Excel is the Swiss Army Knife of each banker, and is surely by these peoples more used than the mail programm or Word. Something like emacs for the geeks !
Open Office gives the possibilty to use a lot of powerfull databases trough an Access-like interface, without the poor limits of Access. All of this is well integrated in a Spreadsheet environment. Maybe some people have began to do interesting things with that...
The first time I went to a CS lecture, I was completely lost. Too much new concepts, that was unpossible to understand the half of what the teacher said. But I had no possibility to change, so I had to do whit that. I did my first year two times, but I took time to understand everything, and now I'm going to do an intenship in one of the biggest computer firm in the world, and for me now this is no pleasure like programming (hhmm, I mean for the study !).
The main thing is : are you prepared to learn hard and stay between 10 and 15 hours a day in front of your computer (and not to play !;). If yes, if you really want to work as a programmer, then try ! You know, with the understanding comes the pleasure. The problem is that some people can't understand, you must know if you are like these people or not.

Avoid the email, it's just a loss of time. (for the argumentation, take a look at this page )

About Jon Gay, I agree with that post.

That say something about how updated this search tool is...
I've seen such a storie before... But it was in America that this recipe had such a success... You should look more Futurama ! ;)
Is one of the most famous company in the world for all that's related with Hi-Fi in vehicules. Not a M$ project !

I would like to see Windows running on a mainframe, then I would change my judgement maybe.

This must be the monolith ! (even if is 3 years too late...)
