Do you really think Longhorn won't make it to the market? After all the time and effort MS has put into it, I'm sure it will go to the Market, although probably far behind schedule (which it already is)
I hope I'm not representative of the masses, but I am usually too busy to look at the article.. (Slashdot included..).
I go to google to see the blurb / synopsis, and move on. I never hit the original site. Sure, I'm a l0s3r. But, in my case, Google is definately giving me something something from AFP that I never would get from them in the first place.
I guess the courts will decide if that is a crime or not.
Words like "Should know enough" and "is a feature, not a bug" is what got Microsoft into trouble (and continues to).
You should not allow unprivilged users to fork as many processes as they want. Having an "assume the worst" mentality helps prevent security blips like this one.
Laugh if you will, but the "Writing Secure Code" book by MS Press is actually pretty good at identifying this kind of thing. You would have hoped the MS folks would have actually read it. There are a bunch of other good security books out there as well, non MS.
Apple does sell software. Try going into an Apple store, taking a copy of the OS and walking out the door without paying for it. I think you'll end up in trouble. Do you really think you're only paying for the CD-Rom?
Great. Maybe this will force American students to get off the couch and start learning things.. Or maybe not. Sputnik was a great impetus for learning science. Nine Eleven was one for learning Arabic.
Most of my development experience tells me that IT development failures almost always are due to a lack of defined requirements. People *think* they know what they want, but they usually don't. And what they do know, they often cannot articulate. Kinda like the Supreme Court's view of pornography "I can't define it, but I know it when I see it."
Most of us in the Development / Software Engineering fields see this on a regular occurrance. The same thing is probably happening here.
Sure, they might (can) get rid of it.. But, who would want to? It's still Bundled with the OS (or pre-loaded if you prefer the Politically Correct term).
Regardless of if you can delete it or not, my point is the same: Because Apple pre-loads iTunes on their OS, they use their 100% (or close) marketshare of Apple Hardware to assist their for-profit iTunes store via Apple Software.
if I understand your argument, if WMP (or any MS product) could instantly be deleted without ramifications, Microsoft wouldn't be bundling. I disagree. Microsoft falls into the same category as Apple, with the possible exception that WMP 10 comes with the MSN music store, Napster, Wal-mart, and a few others. At least MS (for now) is offering competitors to use their bundled software for minimal charges.
I don't think Apple will do that, but please correct me if I'm wrong.
I would argue that Apple has a 'virtual monopoly' with iTunes. The civilian Mac users (including those in my household) do not waste time downloading Real or any of the other music software, because Apple pre-loads iTunes. "Why would I use something else, when I have all I need right here?"
It's similar to the WMP argument used: Microsoft used their OS in order "bundle" WMP, therefore locking in people. It's not a true bundle (WMP can't be deleted that I know of), but when Apple pre-loads its own software on its computers for free, it puts all other companies trying to compete.
Maybe not a monopoly in the legal sense, but something close. And this shouldn't be forgotten.
I own a Tablet PC. I think the Handwriting recognition is remarkable. And I use it in a production environment. Mostly for note taking, but for other things as well.
I have found that the handwriting works great if and only if you use cursive handwriting. If you print, I notice a few quirks show up on those similar characters. But if you put them into a sentence, even that isn't bad (It's smart enough to figure out what you mean, even if it's not recognizing things 100%).
I cannot speak for voice recognition yet, as I don't use it.
One neat thing that MS is doing with tablets involves integration between Smart phones and tablets, since they are logical complements of each other. An Interesting Link follows.
Nope. Polyethylene Glycol is in Dr. Pepper. It's also used as a Bowel Prep before many medical Procedures (I.E. Provides mucho liquid bowel movements).
Not only is Red vs. Blue sanctioned, it is specifically mentioned in the Halo 2 user guide as part of the "7th column", which will help Bungie's goal of "World Domination".
My website is the #1 site listed with specific Criteria on Google. Consistently for the last 2 months. I try the same thing with MSN search and My site does not even show up at all.
If they are searching Google, they haven't done it recently, or else they haven't gotten to my site yet.

To the KC_based managers:
I have gone over the top. I have been making this point for over one year.
We are getting less than 40 hours of work from a large number of our KC-based EMPLOYEES. The parking lot is sparsely used at 8AM; likewise at 5PM. As managers -- you either do not know what your EMPLOYEES are doing; or YOU do not CARE. You have created expectations on the work effort which allowed this to happen inside Cerner, creating a very unhealthy environment. In either case, you have a problem and you will fix it or I will replace you.
NEVER in my career have I allowed a team which worked for me to think they had a 40 hour job. I have allowed YOU to create a culture which is permitting this. NO LONGER.
At the end of next week, I am plan to implement the following: 1. Closing of Associate Center to EMPLOYEES from 7:30AM to 6:30PM. 2. Implementing a hiring freeze for all KC based positions. It will require Cabinet approval to hire someone into a KC based team. I chair our Cabinet. 3. Implementing a time clock system, requiring EMPLOYEES to 'punch in' and 'punch out' to work. Any unapproved absences will be charged to the EMPLOYEES vacation. 4. We passed a Stock Purchase Program, allowing for the EMPLOYEE to purchase Cerner stock at a 15% discount, at Friday's BOD meeting. Hell will freeze over before this CEO implements ANOTHER EMPLOYEE benefit in this Culture. 5. Implement a 5% reduction of staff in KC. 6. I am tabling the promotions until I am convinced that the ones being promoted are the solution, not the problem. If you are the problem, pack you bags.
I think this parental type action SUCKS. However, what you are doing, as managers, with this company makes me SICK. It makes sick to have to write this directive.
I know I am painting with a broad brush and the majority of the KC based associates are hard working, committed to Cerner success and committed to transforming health care. I know the parking lot is not a great measurement for 'effort'. I know that 'results' is what counts, not 'effort'. But I am through with the debate.
We have a big vision. It will require a big effort. Too many in KC are not making the effort.
I want to hear from you. If you think I am wrong with any of this, please state your case. If you have some ideas on how to fix this problem, let me hear those. I am very curious how you think we got here. If you know team members who are the problem, let me know. Please include (copy) Kynda in all of your replies.
I STRONGLY suggest that you call some 7AM, 6PM and Saturday AM team meetings with the EMPLOYEES who work directly for you. Discuss this serious issue with your team. I suggest that you call your first meeting -- tonight. Something is going to change.
I am giving you two weeks to fix this. My measurement will be the parking lot: it should be substantially full at 7:30 AM and 6:30 PM. The pizza man should show up at 7:30 PM to feed the starving teams working late. The lot should be half full on Saturday mornings. We have a lot of work to do. If you do not have enough to keep your teams busy, let me know immediately.
Folks this is a management problem, not an EMPLOYEE problem. Congratulations, you are management. You have the responsibility for our EMPLOYEES. I will hold you accountable. You have allowed this to get to this state. You have two weeks. Tick, tock.
But I'll betcha once China makes a breakthrough the Bush Administration (or whomever) will try to create a Manhattan Project-ish endevour to beat the Chinese. Not because of an energy need, only because we're America, and we need to be ahead in everything..
I think.. Here's why: Europe and other countries abroad continue to lend money to the USA to finance our deficits. If they really felt so strongly against US policies, quit funding them!
Do you really think Longhorn won't make it to the market? After all the time and effort MS has put into it, I'm sure it will go to the Market, although probably far behind schedule (which it already is)
So, if his opinion differs than yours, it *must* be wrong, correct?!
Speculation already, huh?? Let the lawsuits begin.

If it's checking to see if you have genuine windows, and it bails out because you're running WINE under Linux, then it is doing it's job correctly.
Wouldn't we be complaining if it *wasn't* working right?

The real test is to try it out and create an anti-Microsoft blog.. If it is blocked, it might make a good slashdot topic.

This has been well verified, with the CEO actually saying that this was a "joke".. Shame no one told anyone else it was a joke.

Kinda like Google does with governments it wants to be friendly too? (example: China?)
Actually, that is what he said.. I can try to provide a link, if you'd like.
Just because Carter was a democrat doesn't mean that he agrees 100% with everything the part says, I'd think.
>>> Why can venezuela do it and the US cant
Jimmy Carter himself said it best on Fresh Air. America has too much pride... After, we have to do it right, because, eh, we're America.
Perhaps Google is looking to be bought by FOX News?
That is because of America's Pride issue..
But I'll betcha once China makes a breakthrough the Bush Administration (or whomever) will try to create a Manhattan Project-ish endevour to beat the Chinese. Not because of an energy need, only because we're America, and we need to be ahead in everything..
