You're right, the competing options suck, for now, but this is more about the future. They're betting that sites like NBC.com will wise up provide more viewer friendly services for free, undercutting the iTunes video market.
The thing is, Apple is nimble, and while networks might begin to rise to the challange, I don't think Jobs & co. are going to just give up. I do agree that If iTunes Video fails to compete it's going to fall. I think the problem with the article is that it assumes that Apple can't or won't compete. Since when did journalists know a damn thing about what Apple is capable of?
majority of early posts include such titles as: - MS is getting back at the hackers
- Microsoft finally caught on!
WTF, why would you think MS is catching on?
I'll never say something like that until they start selling xboxes that don't need modchips. The MOD community isn't just about creating unincluded features, they are about freedom, and this is something Microsoft will never catch on to.
$1 to go towards something else that's more important than being able to have Word open on one monitor and AIM on another.
Wow a whole dollar, good job. You had dual monitors running for how long and the only thing you were using them for was to have IM and Word open on seperate monitors?
There are some really productive and legitimate uses for dual monitors that in the end save you much more than a dollar in productivity.
A couple of examples of how I use dual monitors:
- Browsing coding/troubleshooting forums in one winow and working in the other, this way I can look at my code and compare it to the examples with out having memorize information before swapping between programs.
- Macromedia Flash, Illustrator, Photoshop, all of these have movable tool winows that I put on my second monitor so I can see the project I'm working on without all the clutter.
I have a friend who plays them addictively...
I watched him kill bugs for an hour in Everquest to build experience points (I made fun of him till he quit). I'm sorry but that's just a waste of time. I think he's addicted to these games because it gives him a sense of accomplishment, something that doesn't come so easily for him in the real world.
could be that way with a lot of gamers... How many addicted gamers do you know who have a life you would call satisfying away from the computer?
Yeah, paranoia is fun and all, but I wouldn't mind a few links to support the downsides claim.
You'ld think IBM would know better than to associate the word "Trust" with "Technology". That combination is like a buzzword for suspicion to the Tech-wise.
Recently I was browsing www.suprnova.org for obscure torrents in their misc area, and I found this "ebook" on how to win texas hold 'em. I downloaded it hoping that it was some kind of strategy guide or an odds list or something turns out it was just some product promotion for a company that makes gambling bots. I downloaded the software trial out of curiosity (I've never played online poker before, I just wanted to see how the program was set up.)
The way it worked (or claimed to, I never tried it) it would monitor my poker game and make calculations based on other people's bids checks or folds and give me tips about whether I should fold, check, bid, or bid high. It kept a percentage rating for probability of wining and stuff like that.
Basically it claimed to play the game for me, which would suck as I was looking for a strategy guide instead.
I can't remember which one it was that I downloaded.
here's a link to one of them
One thing good about a post demo, is that you don't have a demo ruining the mysterious anticipation of the full game. Personally I enjoyed turning it on and runing it for the first time, having no idea what it was going to be like.
I also don't like watching trailers for movies, I'd rather just read reviews on rottentomatoes.com
In summary, music file sharers are demanding a business model that:
* Allows them to preview high-quality, full length songs in the privacy of their homes
* Gives them time to let the music grow on them
People make these demans about $15 cds, but there are software packages out that that cost $500 plus where the same demand applies.
Alias has understood these demands and released the PLE (personal learning edition) where people can use an impressive (slightly crippled) version of their $2,000 + software package.
If Adobe would get the message it would be great to have decent learning versions of their software for free.
Well I know I'll probably get modded down for not being super "green," but I think it's important to point out another effect of installing these things.
National Beauty.
The main thing that causes me to think about this is when I am driving through the midwest doing photography, I get so annoyed at the powerlines ruining the landscape. Honestly they are really kind of depressing. At least with powerlines you can usually find a way to reframe the shot to cut them out, but these windmills are really big.
of course cleaner air would be pretty too.
it's just a thought

A Review comparison of MyBic to these frameworks would be nice. Anyone out there that would like to volunteer?
as I understand it, Infants actually learn grammar before they learn words.
so what about sites with content like "pictures of my stupid friends" and "badger badger"
.com .org .net according to your descriptions.
seeing how these type of things don't fall into the categories
Is there a top level distinction for this kind of stuff?
who's going to be the first to remedy this!
How do they expect anyone to buy this with the lack of details on this site?
I want to know if you can save individual songs or if you have to record things in time blocks. Anyone know what format these songs are stored in?
digital cameras are being -blink- mounted in cars to watch the eye movements of -blink- drivers to make sure that they are -blink- awake.
Must. Stay. Awake. -blink- Slashdot so addicting -blink- I'll be fine tomorrow....

Does anyone know if museums are archiving any of these pecies of our geek history?

the only negative experience I've had with voip is that when you are downloading large files or heavy webpages the voices tend to distort a bit.
"A must read for anyone who's ever talked on the phone."
WOAH! Crap, how did they know? *adjusts tinfoil hat*
Ebay? I'm sure it has a sentimental value to some people.

Yeah great 30 days...
that's just not enough time to let the software grow on them which was the point I'm trying to make.
It's a poor excuse for a trial, and it doesn't meet the demands I was referring to.

Ah.... A monument to ugliness, much like the XP color themes. I get it!

wow it sounds like his connection speed was over-enthusiast too!
In case any of you were wondering where the widely applied term "spam" came from here's an informative link
This link gives Hormel's position on the use of the term "spam" and the history behind it.
Yeah I guess this is ok, but man, it would suck to have your system resources split between two people.
