When the soundtrack to a movie cost as much as the movie itself, then there is a problem. When blues albums from the 30's and 40's cost the same as an over marketed U2 album, then there is a problem.
*was* a fad? It's certainly not the latest and greatest any more, but pokemon titles still consistently sell millions of copies. A few weeks ago in Japan they re-released the original titles (with a wireless networking adapter bundled) and those sold a million copies in only a few days.
Sure, I've played tons of hours on PC based RTS games and I did my time with the original C&C and Starcraft, but these guys didn't even give a nod to the million+ selling Advance Wars series (which by the way started well before the Herzog Zwei on the Genesis).
Sure its not as 3D pretty as PC based ones, but its portable and majorly addicting. I've killed more flights with that game.. actually that game has caused more stewardesses to ask me to "please turn off your electronic device" more so than anyu other game. Compared to the PC based RTS, its very simple.. but its wonderfully balanced and terrable addicting.
Maybe I'm expecting a little too much out of Gamespot, but if they claim to produce a list of top RTS games "of all time!!!" then I would hope they would look a little beyond recent PC based games. What about Utopia on the Intellivision?
I think you've got your press releases confused. The x-box outsold the gamecube for the last 2 weeks before Christmas. And Nintendo's response to that was that most retail stores were already sold out of Gamecubes by then.
Look at the NPD sales numbers, its pretty cut and dry. The X-Box is only being kept alive by MSFT.. and its costing them a billion dollars a year to do it.
When did the gamecube have a downfall? And if it did, where would that put the xbox??
Fat and lazy is no way to go through college, and last place and unprofitable is no way to sell a console.
I think you're right there. If we kept the argument to items that run on electricy, I bet the longest run would be the record player. I think that its compatible run would be longer than the light bulb.
Chris Morris is the biggest dork out there. Every week, he embarasses himself and shows that he doesn't know shit about the video game industry.
Remember that Simpsons where Spinal Tap wouldn't give their endorsement out to a radio station because they weren't sure that "nobody rocks like Bill and Marty"? Chris Morris would not only give his endorsement, he'd write up a lame ass article and consider it a job well done!
I was under the impression that every xbox came along with 2 games.. Tetris and Star Wars.
The only other current consoles that came along with a game were the short lived ATV PS2 pack and Zelda for the GC (not sure if the GC bundle was a limited time thing). Regardless, since no other console includes 2 games, then thats how I figure that the xbox comes bundled with more than anybody (since, 2 is greater than 1.. you see?)
Does anyone have a link/proof as for what the sell through numbers actually show? If they're reported by MSFT, I'm 100% they include the pack in games. If they're reported by resellers, they may not.
Sony didn't set the precedent for backwards compatability. That had been done numerous times before (Atari, Gameboy)
What set a precedent way back when that would totally blow people out of the water today would be to take the ColecoVision approach. Could you imagine if MSFT released a product that would allow PS2 games to play on the x-box?
XBox has the highest number of software sold with the system.. because it has the highest number of games that come bundled along with every system purchased.
But anyway, if your theories above were true, then how do you explain the yearly billion dollar losses of the MSFT Home division? If all these adults are buying xbox and PS2 games, then why is Nintendo the only company who's actually pulling in serious cash?
That was one thing I learned while traveling through Europe. We would inevitable end up meeting/talking with British folks (mainly because they spoke the language) and they would always refer to the French or Dutch as "the Europeans"
Like, "The Europeans have this odd tasting candy" or "The Europeans have some odd TV shows".
At first it threw me for a loop.. I didn't know what they were talking about. I mean.. the British are Europeans with funny tasting candy and silly TV shows too. I didn't know they could detect abnormality among their own kind!
Its not THAT HARD to imagine.. Nintendo did this a number of times back in the 80's. Remember the old Punch Out arcade machine and those double screened Game and Watches.
Today ALL video games are made for just one screen. Who knows what could be posible with two screens as standard equipment. This potentially opens up a whole new style of video games...
And before you bring up the "why not just split one screen into two argument", play some of the older G&Ws games. Those very simplistic games would not be the same if both screens were crammed onto one.
I've got a Malata that I bought from lik-sang.com a few years ago.
It plays damn near everything that I stick in there -- it will even convert PAL video to NTSC on the fly!
Definitely Wario Ware, without a question one of the best games I've played this past year.
Fire Emblem was pretty good, I didn't like Final Fantasy Tactics Advance so much. Mario & Luigi has been reveiwed well, but I havent played it yet. Oh, and Monkey Ball is a great conversion too.
I was buying a HDTV, Initially I wanted the 16:9 format television but after much soul searching and back account checking, I realized that the majority of my TV use is for video games and regular television. Not too much 16:9 support there.
I went with a 36' Toshiba 4:3 format screen and it definitely rocks. FOr the once a month when I watch a widescren DVD, I can handle the black bars. For the rest of the time, I get my games in 480p (taking up the whole screen). 480p definitely looks much better, but you do notice the jaggies more often. Don't regret the purchase at all.. I'd buy it again if I had to.
(For the record, I've got a Gamecube, can't really speak for the xbox or PS2 HD support)
Why would you assume N64s are common over there? As I understand it, this is the first video game console to ever be officially released in China. Sure, there are imports and the plethora of PS, Famicom knock-offs, but I don't beleive that China has ever had a console released specifically for that country.
And of course they're worried about piracy. China is the hotbed of piracy.. Its harder to find an official version of a game (or software) than a pirated one.
Uh... when the original gameboy was released, the concept of backwards compatibility was nothing new.
The most obvious example would be the Atari 7800's out of box compatibility with 2600's cartridges.
Can you show me a CD thats underpriced?

and I've recently noticed that all email from my domains is blocked by Hotmail. I guess thats one way to stop the spam -- just block everything.

I would hardly consider that a "was".
Where is Advance Wars for the gameboy?
.. actually that game has caused more stewardesses to ask me to "please turn off your electronic device" more so than anyu other game. Compared to the PC based RTS, its very simple .. but its wonderfully balanced and terrable addicting.

They're waiting because Halo 1 is still selling so well. Why kill off your only cash cow?
I alwasy thought it was Keep It Simple, Stupid!
I think you're right there. If we kept the argument to items that run on electricy, I bet the longest run would be the record player. I think that its compatible run would be longer than the light bulb.
Way to go music industry!

The gameboy is at 14 years no, thats not a bad run there, and there's no end in sight for that product.
How old could VHS VCR tapes be considered? They were around in the 70's so I would say off the cuff that they're gaining on 30 years there.
Who knows what the longest run could be? I could be totally annoying and bring up something like the Hebrew language.
I still say MSFT needs to release a PS2 emulator for the x-box. The industry would go nuts!

GBA-SP has side lighting.
The old gameboy pocket had backlighting and is supposedly a better solution (for lighting the LCD).
Good thing Nintendo included that out of the box:
Pause your game, then press Select + R.
Your game will still be active, but the GameBoy Advance will be in Suspend mode to save power.
Press Select + L to return to normal operations.

Same here. and unsurprisingly its become even easier to find the files I want.
I've got a Malata that I bought from lik-sang.com a few years ago. It plays damn near everything that I stick in there -- it will even convert PAL video to NTSC on the fly!
You must have been paying the 'tourist' prices. Just last year I was purchasing DVDs on the street for US $2 each there.
Definitely Wario Ware, without a question one of the best games I've played this past year.
