Here are the numbers that I've found for the week:
Gamecube 64,405 Playstation2 53,834 XBox 26,290
However, I don't think that includes all retailers, hence Nintendo sticking with the percentage rather than a total number. And, this is the second week of the price drop. As I understand it, the sales were even higher the first week.
I *distincly* remember saving up $30 to buy Zelda and Mike Tysons Punch Out, back in the day.
Also, I've got some new in the box 2600 games with price tags around $30 as well. Of course, thats a pre-crash price. I've got numerous new 2600 games with price tags of $2.99 on them too.
As for the systems, I beleive that the 2600 was $300 when it was first released, and for some reason I think the NES deluxe set (with ROB) was $200 originally.
8 hours!?!!
I think you're viewing PVRs only as a replacement for VCRs. Of course that is one function, but there is so much more functionality in these things. I have weeks (well, 200 hours) of television recorded not becuase I watch TV an awful lot, but because I rarely watch TV!
I've got maybe 8 or 9 movies taped, 20 simpsons, 20 seinfelds, random TLC/Discovery channel shows, and of course the 2002 and 2003 National Spelling Bees on my Replay.
When I sit down to use it, I like to quickly turn on a simpsons that I haven't seen in a while, or go straight to a show I enjoy without having to sit and wait through 5 minutes of commercials.
The more capacity the PVR has, the more useful it is to me. Its not as if anyone (in their right mind) is going to sit down and seqentially watch 500 hours of teleivsion programs -- they can do that already without a PVR!
That is one thing I never understood about Japan. Books over there were quite cheap compared to here, and yet all of their pulp/paper can't come from that tiny island. Don't they import from the States?
Theres a cnn article up where the auctioneer states he expects to bring in close to $1 million.
But just perusing his auctions it looks like nobody's bidding. There are only a handful a bids on all of his items -- most ending tomorrow. Even with the CNN and Slashdot exposure, nobody's bidding. (or rather, as I hope, nobody actually believes that some crap from Planet of the Apes could be worth $4000.)
You act as if backwards compatibility is something new. It was done years and years ago on some of the first consoles to be released... and its not always a sure fire winner. The 7800 didn't exaclty wow the market because it could play 2600 cartidges.
What I'd like to see again is the equivalent of the Colecovision 2600 adapter. Can you image if someone released a boot disk for the xbox that allowed it to play all PS2 disk flawlessly?!
There'd be anarchy in the streets I tell ya!
Yes, I beleive the prices are comparable to US prices, so they would be out of reach from a typical teenager (I guess).
And the quality varies. In Bangkok, professionally made copies are the norm; in South America its usually some cheap burned disc.
And there are TONS of pirated game boy, mega drive (genesis) and famicom cartidges floating around the world. TONS I tell ya!!
Yes, its a huge problem just not in the better established countries like the US or the EU.
If you ever travel to South America and parts of Asia, its hard to find a *legitimate* copy of a game. Burned copies are being sold on every street corner... its just the norm in some places. I've been to a large, established store dedicated to video games in Istanbul and was unable to find a single legitimate video game - they were all bootlegs!
I'll second that.
Don't use UPS.. They've damaged my computers on their way home from college before (among many other items as well) and have squirmed out of all insurance claims. From the stories my friends who have worked there tell, its a wonder anything makes it through their system.
For the best chance of a safe arrival, use Fed Ex 3-day. For the cheapest, use USPS but be sure and pack it well.. and then pack that box up a second time!
Rent a gamecube and try out zelda, pikmin, splinter cell and metroid.
Those are the best games that have been released in the past 12 months, and all could easily fill a month (unless you have no life that is).
You could try an xbox, but why? If you last played games in the x-wing era, you've already played all the games for the xbox:)
Ps2 has too high of a quality to crap ratio; you might get burned if you just rent random games for that system.
I'm a passing anime fan, but I've had no trouble finding the movies I've wanted to watch here in Nashville.
Spririted Away is everywhere now, and I've caught Princess Monokoe, Akira, and Metropolis here as well.
Maybe you're not trying the right theaters. You *do* know about these 2, don't you?
Same here, I think it looks great. I grew up on those little Game and Watches, and I love how their design shows through here. And unlike a lime green pikachu gameboy, I won't be embarresed to leave it laying around the house.
Just send me your Replay ID
mod parent up.
he speaks the truth
Its total BS. They guy doesn't know what he's talking about.
IIRC, DWANGO required at least a 14,400 modem to play online. (and no, there weren't any Tandys running Doom then)
Is that really the case?
How am I able to PCAnywhere into my Uncle's machine? He uses AOL and I can connect straight to his IP address without any problems.
I believe those are the numbers from the first week of the price drop.
Who knows for sure....
So to follow your example; my kitchen sink breaks and water is flowing all over the floor.
Who do I call? I call a plumber of course, certainly not the water department.

Could it be the Ultracade?

Command and Conquer: "Affirmative!"
The 'commerical' tune on Ms Pac Man after the 3rd board
Parappa the Rapper: "Now turn to the left"
and who could forget the opening song on Zelda 1 as well as the tune from level 1-1 on Super Mario Bros.

Back in the 80s, Atari had a game download service with a special cartidge modem. It failed.
That is one thing I never understood about Japan. Books over there were quite cheap compared to here, and yet all of their pulp/paper can't come from that tiny island. Don't they import from the States?
Or are they raizing China's trees for cheap pulp?

For anyone interested, theres a public forum about this at
Here
and FP??
Here'r our local papers take on the events:
www.tennessean.com
(yes, the paper is a Gannett rag and all "articles" should be read lightly)
I heard somewhere that NPR is going to drop quicktime support.
Has anyone else heard anything about this??
