  1. Sun == erratic on Solaris Coming to IBM's Power Architecture? · · Score: 5, Insightful

Wow. What are they doing over there? Let me preface this by saying i work with solaris daily, i like solaris (love/hate, you know what i mean if you use it), and well, the ultras i have in the house just will not die (not for my lack of trying though).

However, after all these "sorta" announcements from different heads of the crew, i'm getting uneasy about Sun. Java open/closed/free/not-free/for-the-love-of-pete-whi ch-jre-j2se-jrs94x-should i get? Solaris open/closed/free/sorta/java-desktop? Heh, okay just poking fun there, but seriously, do they not seem a little like their top guys don't talk all that much and just make random announcements at this con or that? Yesh.

And i KNOW the roof will raise over the suggestion of dropping osX in favor of Solaris on mac....er, wow, my mind is blown that one might consider doing that for anything other than fun...for a few minutes. Wow, Sun is just makin me uneasy these days - glad i'm not in charge of any huge shops (i assure you that you are glad for that too ;-)

Prolly have it down by rote at this point after getting more than a few calls about it. If it were my pc, i'd do it just to see all the stuff and give it a shot, but the "my stupidass boyfriend fucked up my computer" doghouse is not where i want to be....ever!

If they want to keep his knowledge of what he worked on whilst at the old job, should have gone NDA (non disclosure agreement) on him (i know you know this, just being complete).

Several of my proff's stayed in industry a bit longer than even they admit they should have with some companies due the insane amount of money keeping them there.

Plain and simple, have the NDA's for guys like this, pay them what they are worth (more if needed to keep them in the fold), and remember that if he's that good, he'll find other ways to make "must have" tech for harddrives, etc.

As for dropping cable, i just scored a new gig that will pay for broadband and i'm dropping cable (and it's admittedly very reliable internet access) like a fucking rock for DSL immediately. Other than the intarweb, i won't miss much from cable and dsl will pick up the slack.

As for your ending comments, jesus, i have to agree - the lineups for the last few months on the weekends have all been killer-this or killer-that...all poorly made, poorly acted and just...not good. Small plot revolving around a handsome fellow, hot chick (whose makeup rarely smears despite flames, sweat, blowing pretty much everything sight up, etc), and some freak animal variety. Quick little story:

My girlfriend moved in (shocking, i know) with a hobbled together PC, same way i do mine - buy mobo-proc combo, case with decent psu, some video card that works with the mobo and some ram from crucial.

i normally repeat this cycle about meh, once every 2 years (recently graduated computer engineering student) and it worked out okay, but both of our machines always suffered from the old, *something* has gone wrong and died all the sudden.

With just one real workstation at any time to mess with for many years, i didn't mind all that much. Well, with two of them in house pulling that crap - it seemed like every month, i was buying some new component for either her pc or mine. It was getting old.

She scored a few contracts for her art (the Papa Roach cd and a slew of Brit albums from various artists that will hit soon have her stuff on them). Well, it was time to get a real machine. i wanted her to get a dual g5, but she wanted to stick with windows for all of her art software and plugins (well over $4k of x86 only stuff). Soooooo, we got her one of these...and here is the point of this post:

Blah, blah, blah as you will about Dell-this and Dell-that - i've not had *one* problem with that machine. i'll remind you, she is not doing light weight work. Not one problem. Er, and it kicks some serious ass with ut2k4 i might add ;)
