  1. I almost hope I piss someone off on What's the Problem With US High Schools? · · Score: 1

Did anyone consider that there are plenty of kids dropping out and going to work because they _have_ to in order to support the rest of their family? How many times have you seen young kids going to work to help mom and dad pay for the rest of their (some inordinate amount of) siblings? Maybe if mom and dad would get "real" jobs instead of relying on having more children so their welfare pay is higher their older children could afford to stay in school.

That said, I too think the US education system isn't great. The kids I've seen "grow up" since I've been out of high school seem stupider and stupider by the day.

Not original, but I totally agree; Stupidity isn't illegal, but maybe we should remove the warning labels from everything and let the problem solve itself.

  10. Old News on GM's Billion-Dollar Fuel-Cell Bet · · Score: 1

This was in the LA Times and Popular Science almost a year ago. Oh well.

There aren't engines at each wheel, there's an electric motor at each wheel. The front page comment makes it sound like a fuel cell per wheel.

Okay, now the part I like most. GM insiders (and therefore outsiders too) nicknamed this thing the Skateboard chassis. One of the ideas is that you can change body styles to suit your mood. Don't want to drive the SUV today? Just drop the Roadster body on instead. Feeling nostalgiac for them old right-hand-drive British roadsters? Unplug the pedal and steering wheel assemblies, and plug em into the other side of the car. Or put em in the middle if you don't want side-seat drivers! Configurability is going to be their key selling point, the environmental friendliness will just be for the EPA folk. (that's my take on it anyway). It also will make it so GM can drop production costs drastically. They can just turn out platforms by the millions, making for low costs. Then they can develop just the body of the car seperately, no more having to redesign frames, chassis, engine mounts, etc... Everything will have the same plugin style mounting, cutting new model design time and cost by (my guess) at least 50%!

Okay, done raving about GM finally pulling their head outta their collective ass. Now if Mopar would pull theirs' the rest of the way out...

As for the comment about Seattle's monorail; they've had one since 1962, built for the Century 21 World's Fair. It was the first full-scale ALWEG monorail in the States. In fact, Seattle is the only place with original ALWEG built monorails still running. This year has had a lot of advancements towards getting Seattle's bigger. In this little 10' x 10'-ish apartment office thing I have there are three desks. My desk is one of them 'L' shaped things that takes up half of two walls. One wall has another desk finishing it off, the other has a bookshelf. Wall three is a full width closet (the closet space in this apartment is wonderful, especially since I don't have a garage *grumble*), but it holds a third tiny desk with room for another computer. Wall four has a door in it, plus the area taken up by the side of desk #2, so there's about 4 feet of just plain wall space, full of a calendar, whiteboard, and a lamp for lighting (there is almost no overhead lighting in this damn state (SoCal) so I have to use floorspace instead).

They're a nice little stainless steel box, with two buttons and a 'wobble pad' (three buttons aren't needed, since I haven't yet convinced the powers that be to run Linux over win98). The cool thing about them is that they are constantly doused with hydraulic oil, knocked off the desk, shot with 3500+ PSI of oil, etc... So far they're holding up great.

Downside is, the price is around $400, so I don't think I'll be getting one anytime soon.

Okay, the webpage says they'll race the World Champion (whoever that will be in three years I guess). I wonder if they stopped to think about whether someone like Schumacher or Villaneuve (please forgive possible misspellings) would even consider racing against a machine? I know I wouldn't, and the racers I know would definately scoff at the idea.

Second thought, I wonder why they chose F1? It wasn't that long ago that the governing body of F1 started being more strict on what kinds of electronics could be in the cars. Someone said (can't recall who) something about the cars almost being smart enough to drive themselves. If they were truly out to show that the computer can do it better, they should put it in a World of Outlaws car (struggle to go straight, let go to go around the turn, sideways). Or how about Motorcross (the old kind, where you weren't allowed to put your feet down)? Anybody watched "On Any Sunday"? Let's see a robot try to put a motorcycle over a 30-ish inch log laying across the trail, and then make the 90 degree turn right after the log... Most people can't do that..

  21. EV's and Gas V's on Electric Car Drag Racing · · Score: 1

There's nothing wrong with electric cars (well, okay, nothing wrong with the idea anyway). However, it still seems that it's just not quite time yet. Recently I read an article in which a General Motors high-up guy said something like "for us, the cheapest way to get NiMH batteries is to buy a Toyota EV, take the batteries, and throw the rest of the car away" (or similar).

Personally, I don't see storage as the problem here. The range of an EV is getting better by the day (almost). The problem is the recharge time. I, and most other people are used to spending a few minutes at a gas station to "recharge" the fuel tank. If someone comes up with a snazzy way to recharge a bank of NiMH batteries in a time equal to filling up a 20 gal tank, then there's virtually no problem.

Another thing I recently read made the comment that the current (year 2000) Honda Civic actually produces cleaner air out the tailpipe than it breathes in, when driving in downtown Los Angeles. Granted, there's no Oxygen in the exhaust, but there's less NOx, CO2, etc... than went in the front. I dunno, I think the environmental aspect of "needing" alternative-fuel vehicles is losing it's oomph. Today's Honda motors are almost 90% cleaner than the Honda motors of 10 years ago. The problem now is simply the fact that we're slowly but surely running out of fossil fuels.

The only convention we have around here is that there needs to be either a little plastic figurine, or a stuffed animal sitting atop the machine to match the name.

For example, yoda has a little rubber Yoda sitting above it. Eeyore has an Eeyore beanie-baby like thingus sitting on it's monitor.

Currently there's one exception, but it will be remedied shortly. We were trying to figure out a name for my new box, and ended up naming it Al (I said "what shall we call it", my wife sort of sang "call it Al"). Since we aren't about to rename one of the other boxes to Eddie, I guess I'll have to rename Al (probably will become Tick, or Chairface, since I've got those bendable rubber figures sitting on it already)
