Stop thinking of pr0n for a second, as difficult as that may be for some, and try to think of another good use for this: sports. A particularly tricky off-side situation in a football match (alright, soccer...) or tennis or whatever.
Then again, what am I saying - this is cool simply because it exists.
...that it was going to be a nation as poor as India that would first try to use technology without damaging the environment?
I get this nagging feeling some nations should take notice...
So all Microsoft has to do in order to load songs to an iPod is to sell you an mp3
er...not really. Microsoft own the rights to the WMA format, but in order for them to sell songs encoded to MP3 they'd have to pay the rights to the Fraunhofer people, and that is not the sort of thing Microsoft does - unless of course they decide to buy the Fraunhofer Institute...now that's a frightening thought.
This might be slightly off topic, but I have a question for all you Apache boys. I get this weird error from my Apache/2.0.48 (Win32) Server: it installs fine, I set it up properly, I set the passwords and the users, I test it, everything works fine, people can access and download stuff, then a few months later they start getting broken downloads. Meaning that, if they try to snag a 4.8 MB mp3 for instance, they end up being able to download only about 300 KB (the beginning of the file/song) after which it abruptly ends. Although the file clearly says 4.8 MB on the web page, Apache only lets you download some 3-400 KB. I have no idea what causes it (registry rot doesn't seem to be it) and the only way to fix it is to reinstall Apache - ten minutes later all is good again. Any ideas, anyone?
This won't be completely off topic, I hope - I was 12 and living in Romania when it happened. As you know (since you are all well-read Slashdot readers) Ukraine is not very far from Romania, and the radioactive cloud hit us pretty soon afterwards. I remember distinctly how frantic my parents were, trying to feed us vitamin C and iodine, along with bottled water. My brother was eight at the time - five years later he was diagnosed with epilepsy. Have been wondering ever since if Chernobyl had anything to do with it. More interestingly even - he is now completely healthy, due to the fact that it was discovered early and he followed a strict treatment for a long time.
For those of you who have bothered to read this weepy story all the way, here's the final irony: for the past eleven years I have been living in Japan, I married the most beautiful Japanese woman (well, of course she's the most beautiful, she's mine ) and we're about to have a child in January.
And we live in Hiroshima.
nice sig and all, but you should really check its spelling. it should be "a shell script WHOSE sole aim", not 'who's'.
unless of course it's that way on purpose:)
I actually translated a Buddhist book (from Japanese into English - don't ask...) called 'Zero And Buddhism', in which the author, an utterly insane old lady whom I never wish to meet again, seemed to believe that the one thing that makes Buddhism the one and true religion is the fact that it comes from India, where they invented zero, which is the symbol for selflessness or some such rot. very tiresome. still, it was India, even an atheist dopehead like myself knows that.
but a very good point that was, about zero. makes one wonder.
"Science is a rational approach to existence, and its true practitioners are, for lack of better words, on the right track. However, to unconditionally bestow respect on scientists is like emptying your wallet for each street musician. And to bestow respect on an agency that funds scientists is like giving your wallet to a bus driver with instructions to give it to a street musician."
"Four out of five biologists regard psychologists as jibbering baboons, and you should too. If other scientists had their way, Psychology would not be considered a "science" at all, but would be ranked somewhere above Creationism and below Performance Art. In fact, those who receive undergraduate degrees in Psychology but decide not to pursue graduate programs in that field often fall back on careers in Human Resources. But because the psychologist is in a position to terminate your contract on a whim, it may be in your favor to temporarily imagine the psychologist not as a glorified HR clerk, but as a respected authority with legitimate expertise. Such ideas can always be discarded after the interview."
got to love the guy, whoever he may be, he is funny. as someone has said above, the real story is here http://www.bigdeadplace.com/
Dude. You actually mentioned to someone you work with that you were having problems with PORN because you don't use IE? Wow. Now that's balls alright./end fawning Joking aside - I work for a big (1200+ workers) in Japan, and I have been having quite a bit of success convincing those around me to switch to Firefox (and to Thunderbird, to a certain degree). How far the ripple effect will go remains to be seen. The _previous_ company I worked for was very small, 25 machines or so, and by the time I left they were all running Firefox and OpenOffice./end boasting So yes, there is hope.
People - enough already. Every time Real is mentioned on Slashdot, some smartass has to go on about buffering. I mean, come on - it used to be really bad in the old days, but Real have learnt their lesson and improved the damned thing, so it's now way easier to...buffering...buffering...
I'm using Firefox 0.9.2 and that proof of concept proved nothing for me, all I got was a big fat error and no spoofing. Oh well, that was exciting then.
mate, you should really check out QCD Player
http://www.quinnware.com/
with the little SpinAmp add-on (and Real G2...yes, I know...) you get about 400 free radio stations, and it works much better than WinAmp (WAY less memory and CPU)
then if you really need Real, do yourself a favour and find RealAlternative.
what scientific research? it would be used in Star Wars ep. VI in no time...
so now we have to be politically correct towards planets?
damn.

So if they're successful then in capitalist America the machines no longer count you?
nah, we'll only mod you down because you can't spell 'you're'.
In Soviet Russia, the words recognize you! (groan...there goes my karma then)
oh, so THAT was it. well then, I am feeling so much better now.

er...yes? although it seems it was not in a very funny way, alas. sigh. guess karma point will have to wait then.
yes, it is Mojira indeed: http://www.mozilla.gr.jp/ (read the three white characters on the purple label thinggy)
