While Gui's are great at presenting information, manipulation is usually a mixture of mouse and keyboard to a greater or lesser extent. The mouse is usually good for doing things once but for things you do repeatedly you will often use the keyboard for speed. Copying and pasting is usually a combination of ctrl c ctrl x ctrl v , ctrl a to select all. Alt tab for switching between apps on a single desktop. ctrl alt arrow to shift between screens. Usually if i'm mostly using a browser and a spreadsheet they will get separate screens lesser used applications like the image viewer, ftp and instant messenger will generally be left on a pile on a third

Even something like the gimp tasks are made easier with the keyboard take for example a rectangular select sure you can do it with a mouse but if your wanting to select a particular pixel using the coordinates box to shift to a particular position or moving the selection via the boxes for x or y using the arrows and then using the width and height boxes is a lot easier than flapping about with a mouse.

for example I bought a little 3d camera for a bit of fun it saves 2 images as a single jpg along with guides to allow for printing side by side. however to make an anaglyph i need to cut the 2 images out stack them on top of each other and apply cyan and red to the 2 layers.
so rectangular select 247 496 597 448 (yes its low res) for the first image ctrl x ctrl shift v change 247 to 1042 and the rectangle select now is over the second image ctrl x and then paste as new layer over the first and use the scriptfu plugin i found to add the filters and set the transparency and save.
Actually I could do all of this from the command line but would mean learning and figuring out how to script it but then I could batch process a 1000 images in less time than it would take to do just one. I could probably do a fair few thou in the time it would take to figure out how to do that.
although somebody has probably done a rectangular select script which i could use twice an add file as layer script and a process scriptfu script to do the filtering. so then it becomes a batch command to construct and then execute.

can't you just tell i am going to google a few things now to pull together that script :)
Think i am a dinosaur for using a command line and a few prepared scripts?

The primary purpose of a computer is to do the tedious jobs so we don't have to. Obviously a one off job do what ever is easiest, if your repeatedly doing the same things find a smarter way to do it. Sometimes you might spend 30 hours learning something new but if that pays back by saving months of tedious work, then it makes sense to invest the time.

In normal circumstances, it is wise to proceed with caution before accusing somebody and generally the evidence isn't presented to be viewed by the general public.

However in this case i am confident that the identification by one of the women robbed, the dead girls blood on his clothing the shell casings left at the murder scene that matched the gun found in his apartment along with the disposable phones he used for contacting the women ...

The evidence is solid enough to be sure that he did in fact commit the crimes he was accused of. Plus there is no chance of being sued for deformation what with the guy having committed suicide while awaiting trial.

There were a few interesting points made, while he used disposable phones to contact the women he also had his regular phone with him which tied him to the same cells used by the disposable phones at the same times which was useful in identifying him as a suspect. He also made the email account he used to contact the girl he murdered from his home ip address.

The police nearly made a mess of things when they brought him in as after interviewing him there wasn't enough evidence to charge him, but luckily while he was in custody being questioned one of the women who was robbed identified him with absolute certainty which enabled the police to search his apartment and find the physical evidence. Without her identification of him they almost certainly would have had to let him go and give him the opportunity of disposing of the physical evidence.

The facebook stuff is interesting in that it shows what information facebook holds about someone even after that information has been "deleted". However in this case nothing facebook released gave any evidence towards the criminal case.

The guy was a medical student so it is reasonable to assume he was highly intelligent, he also seems to have had a gambling problem.

His choice of who to rob was probably made on the basis he thought that the services these women offered was likely to mean they would have money from earlier clients and less likely to report a robbery. The article also mentioned he had a collection of women's underwear under his mattress so maybe it was more than just getting money to pay his debts.

Did he rob other women who didn't report the crime?

The engine immobiliser still works you need a proper coded key for the ignition to work, you might still steal the car but the door locks are not going to be much of a barrier honestly.

Sure sometimes i might be carrying something of value when it makes the cost of repairing the car less than the cost of the stolen goods but then i would lock it.

however in practical terms the cost of a break in is my insurance excess (500 euro) + the loss of noclaims discount which is around 75% a loss of (750 euro).

A friend of mine had his lorry fuel tank syphoned in a locked patrolled yard no less, the police said he should have a locking cap on the tank. well that is all well and good until you realise the tank would still have been broke into and the tank damaged in the process and his lorry would have been off the road making him unable to meet his contracts. While annoying and expensive to lose fuel that way the alternative could cost him a lot more maybe even his business.

The only place it seems it isn't mentioned is on the website for the campsite. McDonalds in the UK and Ireland advertise that they only use British and Irish beef in their burgers, Supermarkets similarly promote locally produced products.

You may find sales improve due to buyer ethics, "fair trade" products sell at higher prices, than non fair trade precisely because the buyer chooses an ethical product over one which exploits the producer.

Nike a company which has previously had consumer pressure applied sells it's shoes at a premium price which more than offsets the cost of making people feel good about buying Nike.

Consumer pressure helps improve conditions for the people who produce the products that they buy. Almost predictably the one class of consumer which is almost always price aware is the corporation who looks for the lowest cost for it's infrastructure.

One type of consumer that I've largely ignored are the ones barely getting by lowest price is what matters above all else as they are making choices between eating and heating paying for rent or mortgage for these people buying Apple products isn't an option so price of an iPad really doesn't matter, they can't afford a new one at any price.

There is another group that is slightly ahead of the really poor folk who also get screwed over and that is the people who buy iPads and iPhones through a contract with a service provider, they get a low up front cost but pay way more over the life of the contract for the device than the device is worth. To them there is no real difference in price between a phone built in china or the usa they still pay the same regardless. It's the service providers profits which get reduced a little per user but they also can be the only provider carrying the phone so get more users and more profit that way.

I'm being screwed as well and i have a cheap android phone i bought outright and i pay as i go.
I get free skype calls i get 3000 texts a month i get free calls at weekends i get free data i even get 10 euro free credit a month if i buy 20 euro a month worth of credit. if i buy 10 euro i get no free calls, no skype and no free texts. It sounds a lot but i don't actually use more than a small percentage of the "freebies". So essentially i'm on a call plan which is at least 20 euro a month, cheaper than a contract, just. If I had a contract I would have a better phone and i would be paying it off over the contract period. The contract would be maybe 7 euro upwards a month more and i'd have a lump sum to pay towards the phone cost.

of course i have the option in pay as I go of not topping up till my freebies run out. Which means i only need pay my minimum 20 euros and i can always email or text or skype with my phone and receive calls when i run out of call credit (which doesnt take long). On a contract i would be in a similar situation but i would be paying for calls at the end of the month as i'd have gone through my included minutes on a cheap contract. last contract i had i never used all my minutes but national calls international and freephone calls all were charged for outside of my included minutes.

So while starting with the ethical and national pride reasons for why we might pay more for iPhones it comes down to mostly we don't buy iPhones directly our service providers do and sell them to us at a huge markup so it makes no difference to us as consumers how much they cost, it's the corporation we are contracted with that would feel the pinch and if they won't bare it then another corporation will and we will switch as soon as the sentence ^^^H contract is up.
