  5. FUD? on Ballmer on Linux · · Score: 5, Insightful

"I'm not trying to spread fear, uncertainty and doubt," Ballmer said

Fear - Ballmer argued that companies should be wary of the lack of indemnity from lawsuits, such as the suit filed by The SCO Group Inc. against DaimlerChrysler AG, IBM, Novell Inc. and others over parts of the Linux operating system that SCO claims infringe on elements of the Unix operating system that it owns.

Uncertainty - "In the Linux world, nobody stands behind patent claims," he said, noting that Microsoft could be forced to swallow a $550 million judgement if it loses its ongoing case with Eolas Technologies Inc., but that its customers would be protected.

Doubt - On the touchy issue of security, Ballmer also dismissed the notion that Linux is more secure than Windows, saying that Linux would be attacked just as frequently as Windows if the open source operating system had as large a share of the operating system market as Windows.

Yes, you can just call a C/C++ library which has inline assembly. Never needed to do that. In fact that would get me fired because nobody would be able to maintain it. To make up the costs of coding/maintaing something for the applications I write versus the hardware costs of needing a more powerful computer to run it would never come close.

Somebody doesn't understand object oriented programming. That "type again" is called a constructor. You sometimes need to provide parameters to a constructor or even use a constructor from an inherited class.

If Nintendo is smart they will continue the line of games like the excellent "Mario vs Donkey Kong". The original game boy had a lifespan of 8-10 years. The Advance series is getting cut off in 4-5 good years for the DS. The DS is gimmicky and the graphics upgrade isn't work purchasing for the use of a stylus.

Nintendo feels it needs to go after an adult market like the PSP. What they need to do is develop more adult oriented games like Advance Wars and people will still buy a SP. As an adult I like traveling with the SP because it's small, cheap, and the cartridges are tougher than nails. I won't be able to throw one of those PSP disks in my pocket without it breaking. I can't even keep track of my Palm Pilot stylus. How are 8 years not going to lose the stylus?

  18. Critizing people's code will make you look great! on Communication Within Programming Teams? · · Score: 5, Insightful

Generally what is good code and what is bad code is all subjective. Yeah I know there are instances of really bad code but I see a lot of developer's criticize other's code simply because it is different. If it fulfills the requirements and can be maintained it is usually good code.

I also think people make a big scene to managers that the previous developer's code was bad simply to make themselves look good. The manager who usually doesn't code says to themselves "Well he must be a great coder if he thinks the previous developer didn't know what he/she was doing."

Another developer cliché is to complain about documentation. Doesn't matter if you write a war and peace size document to explian everything, the next developer is totally not going to read it. The next developer if he/she doesn't understand it simply says "This code is crap". This buys more time to become competent at programming changes and makes them look like a top coder to the credulous manager.

This being Slashdot, I have to give the opinion of a footbal fan as one of the few.

Here is why the NFL doesn't want tapings of games on the Internet
    • NFL just started there own cable channel the "NFL Network". Rebroadcasting all pre-season games this year. Only a matter of time before the rebroadcast all the games.
    • Direct TV contract. You can watch the games you want it you pay for the $300+ Direct TV package.
    • Local teams need the plug. The NFL chooses the game you will watch. Even if the game is meaningless and there is a really good game somewhere else.
    • Still want to black out if needed. Teams don't blackout local coverage much anymore but they still will if the game is not sold out. Oh yeah if that happens you don't get another game you get an infomerical. Oh yeah they can still black you out on Direct TV.
I would pay for a reasonable way to watch the games I want to see. I would also like to go to games but football tickets are insane. The NFL really knows how to screw thier fans sometimes.
