I had a fellow 'admin' who showed everyone that it was much better to move the task bar to another edge of the screen and set auto-hide. I had to hit each edge (and the @#$# office toolbar) to find the damn thing. To this day, I hit Ctrl-Esc instead. (We didn't have the Windows button on keyboards at the time, I've learned to like that button. Windows-E forever, or at least as long as Windows exists.)

You'll note they got rid of the Office toolbar. It was none too soon.

Actually, in 3.1 you could have 'MOM' the Microsoft Office Manager, that was a bar that sat at the top of the screen with icons to launch Office apps. It was part of Office, not Windows, but it's been around for a while. In Office 95 they replace it with a bar that could dock with the side of the screen like another task bar.

Thanks for the flashbacks. I forget how long I've been doing this sometimes.

Would you care to explain what you mean by "Windows Registry." You're not talking about the actual Registry or hive files are you? It would be possible to build a service that monitored the local hive and replicated the changes to a back end DB. It could get ugly, but would make for an interesting product.

If you simply mean a tree-like data structure then I can see what you're talking about, but I've seen that kind of retardation in Unix software as well. It's not a Microsoft only phenomenon.

If they were real MS programmers they would have simply looked for an ODBC/ADO/LINQ/(whatever they call it this year) interface to the DB and been happy to not know anything about the back-end. These guys sound more like they don't know either end and are relying on MS tools being 'easy' to cover their inexperience.

Yep, the price itself is usually less of a problem than figuring out how to pay for something. First, there is the paperwork. Then you have to see if the supplier is set up by Accounting. Then you may have to make a cost justification. Then you run into the 'we don't pay for things online, do they have a mailing address and can we get thirty days credit' line from the Accounting people. It's quicker and easier to get a cracked copy than jump through all of the hoops for a cheap item.
