When I was in HS in the early '80s, the male staff and classmates were actively hostile to me being in the STEM classes. I had teachers question what I was even doing enrolled in the class when I should be taking home economics or the like. The only other girl in year 12 doing science classes with me did Chem/Biol while I did Chem/Phys and Pure & Applied Maths.

I was the second top student at the school in my year, it's possible that if my teachers and classmates had been less hostile I may have been top student.

Yes. Sleep disturbance and diminished cognivive/memory function are classic signs of clinical depression.

I would also say that diminished cognitive/memory function and clinical depression are classic signs of a sleep disorder based on my husband's experiences of severe obstructive sleep apnea. (When I say severe, I mean having seizures, hallucinating, not sleeping properly for over a decade before correct diagnosis and treatment).

When I was in high school in the mid 80s I had male teachers actively discouraging me from pursuing STEM courses and even questioning why I was still in school when I should be learning to cook and clean. I was the top English student in the year, and 2 top student overall (physics, chemistry, pure and applied maths, english).

I got into IT because my friends at university who were doing science and engineering degrees wouldn't let me do my essays writing by hand, and forced me to type them on a computer in the lab at uni.

Waiting until college to make them feel welcome is too late - you need to get to them in elementary school or earlier. Look at boys toys vs girls toys to see how we program children from an early age as to gender appropriate pursuits.

There was a great image doing the rounds of twitter the other day of a boy getting a megablocks set that can be built in an infinite number of configurations, programed by computer and a robot, etc... and a girl being given a doll which can... but used as a doll, you can pretend it's a baby but that's about it.

So strangely enough male children stream into STEM and girls go into teaching, nursing and other care based occupations. And guess which of these classes of careers pays better?

I'm a bit of a mutant, I used to steal my cousins mechano as a kid, I'm the one that ended up in IT.

Mostly the world is filled with people who aren't squeaking by and live below what we would consider the poverty line, not even making a subsistence living.

Even within the 'first world' there are plenty of people below the poverty line, homeless etc... Just squeaking by or better means you are pretty special, you were lucky enough to be born where you had the opportunity to get an education, support to get a decent job and to have a roof over your head, food and access to technology.

Probably not the answer people were looking for.
