  1. Ok on Game/Movie Comparisons Raise Art Question Again · · Score: 4, Insightful

FTA:300 is a vacuous film filled with bad dialog, stiff acting, a pointless one-dimensional plot and interchangeable characters that hardly deserve to be named in the script. The film barely has a first act and does nothing but drive to a preposterous conclusion led along by a sequence of ridiculous events. The Visuals are nothing more than technical masturbation. Simply put, 300 is the best damn film I've seen all year. I haven't had this much fun watching a movie in a long time. It's nice to see Hollywood is finally striving to be more likes games.

Ok, so in short, gamers as he sees it are only interested in the technical masturbation portion of what games are. IF that's true, then consoles that emphasize game play wouldn't be doing as well as a certain little industry darling that does is. But even if that's only about -gameplay- (as Wii games don't exactly have the best acting/plot), some of the most loved games out there have some incredible characters and/or plot. (textual or otherwise).

He totally misses the point, this movie was one for people who are looking for eye candy and visuals, not plot or well developed characters and script. There are games like this as well. For example, the difference between the Monkey Island series (amusing, somewhat witty script) and Doom 3. Implying that all games in the popular market in somewhat recent memory are terrible in terms of things that a typical movie-goer would find important only demonstrates an ignorance of what the over-21 year old gamer market really is looking for.

No, that will be a problem. Once you have the database, what exactly am I supposed to input for searching? Will I need to learn how to create a 3D model in order to search for similar objects?
The rest of your comments are pretty valid, however in this case that would seem to be aside the point. Searching objects in this fashion would be as simple as metadata that is appropriate for 3d model searches. Rather than provide a base model, you could search the metadata supplied with/for/generated for shapes, and once you have a few from the library, use THOSE as searches for -similar- or combined models. It's actually quite possible, if of questionable use - not to mention your criticism could be thrown back at you by simply saying "What!??! A search engine for sound? That will never work, I'd have to learn how to whistle".

The gaming industry is holding onto archaic ideals. It is like the car factory that insists hand-built is better, and refuses to mechanize any aspect of their production. It is now suffering the consequences, and like it or not they will have to change.

Except that most major development studios are still "hand-producing". The problem is no-one (to my knowledge) has managed to consistently, successfully do all of the things you're suggesting across the board -and- managed to turn an obscene profit doing so.

When that happens in a demonstrable fashion, you will see many in the industry take notice, but implying that the old ideals are archaic without showing success is (to use a metaphor similar to yours) like a minister condemning condoms without a solution to the obvious social problems that adopting such beliefs system-wide would cause.

The problem in THIS case is that it appears a GM was violating the rules that everyone plays by. You seem to imply that somehow those other out-of-game contacts violate the rules, and this isn't so.

The issue here is that the game is fair only so long as every player has the same set of rules.

Open source is great. I love the community aspect involved and Linux and its open source components taught me a great deal about system software through college. Although I (we?) understand that open source should be used for education and general computing safety, there are far more people out there that are not as cavalier. Open source is not the solution for everything. To demand everything should be is just foolish.

I don't think anyone is suggesting that's needed. Just that if they're doing ONE unfriendly thing, since we cannot see their code we cannot know what else they may be up to. Not unreasonable, and also not a call to make everything OSS.
