"Of course everything concerning child porn tends to err on the side of vigorous prosecution, but then it's a pretty horrific crime, so that's understandable. "
Just because something is horrific doesn't mean we should throw out all rational thought. I mean I have people in my life who were affected by molestation when they were children, and I would love to throttle the ones who did it, BUT i would rather we as a society think about this rationally and err on the side of caution rather than execute people on the spot for happening to look at child porn.
The parent makes some good points which seem to be dismissed out of hand (and not modded very high due to it's nature) because we are dealing with children here...
Isn't this the whole thing we are rallying against? Broad sweeping generalizations and laws enacted "because of the children"?
"We have to take the government's word for it, because no one is allowed to independently research child porn."
Reminds me of this other great threat to america, i believe it is called marijuana. The government has told me many times that it is very bad for me, although i cannot find out for myself because it is illegal. Scientist have tried to do independant studies to find out if this "drug" is indeed harmful but the government will not allow them too because it is illegal.
34-current have 30+ games installed on my PC, own 2 consoles (ps2+gamecube) and play about 15+hours a week, sometimes more as my time allows.
I have many friends in the same age bracket who are about as "hard core" as I am.
When i wasn't employeed the hours played were more along 40+ a week.
I also have kids and a wife.
So I am the demographic for the hardcore gamer (maybe not the typical slashdot geek tho).
Now that my kids are getting older (10,11 and 15) we can play games on our lan which is helping to increase my play time as i am not "being selfish" as my wife puts it, I am spending "quality time" with the kids;)
As usual these surveys and marketers have their heads up their arses, but this is typical because those who respond to surveys and marketers aren't savy enough to know better, and typically not "hard core" (meaning they are too busy gaming to answer surveys:P).
So I used to hate ads that tell me I should vote yes or no on a particular proposition, but now I realise it actually makes my life easier.
When I see an ad telling me to vote no on a prop. because it will raise gas prices and is bad for the environment I check to see who sponsored the Ad, if it is a major oil company (like exxon) then I know it is FUD and I can safely vote yes.
When I see an ad telling me to vote yes for a prop. because it will help pay for medical costs associated with smoking and then see it is sponsored by hospitals, I can safely vote No.
It's all about who will benefit by the proposition passing or not passing and then who is sponsoring the ad.
The hard one is when it doesn't have a clear bias but seems to be benificial, like increasing money for schools or public parks, then I actually have to check if it will be funded by taxes or bonds (in which case i vote yes if I feel it is needed when it will be funded by taxes and no if it is funded by bonds(for whatever reason) as funding through fiscal irresponsibility is just stupid and ends up costing more).
Your comparing your 45 minutes to waits of upwards of 11 hours?!? The shortest lines were 3 hours long, comapred to republican districts which had little to no lines?!? Yes this definitely looks like a concerted effort to suppress.
FTFA: "Would-be voters in Dayton and Cincinnati routinely faced waits as long as three hours. Those in inner-city precincts in Columbus, Cleveland and Toledo -- which were voting for Kerry by margins of ninety percent or more -- often waited up to seven hours. At Kenyon College, students were forced to stand in line for eleven hours before being allowed to vote, with the last voters casting their ballots after three in the morning.(132)"
"She could always claim she had a BSOD which corrupted the hard drive and she had to reformat. That is quite a plausible situation!"
There is a difference between re-formatting and wiping, re-formatting a hard drive will leave traces of the old files/file structure, wiping involves multiple passes over the media which will erase all original traces of any files or OS structure.. telling the 2 apart is not very difficult for data recovery experts.
I usually have 2 programs that I "watch" one main and the other one I flip to when the commercial break comes on the program I am watching, I have gotten so used to it that i usually flip back when the break has ended.
I HATE commercials, unfortunately they are everywhere. I understand commercials and their place, but their original usage (revenue from ad agencies in return for free services) is long gone, is it so outrageous to expect to not have commercials when i am paying for services? Cable, movies, newspapers, magazines and now games... it would be one thing if they were free with commercials, but I AM PAYING FOR THESE SERVICES!!!
So i actively subvert advertisers efforts, i delete the "movie" type ads in my games, i refuse to watch commercials on TV/Cable (I will flip or do other things during commercials) i pop a DVD in my dvd player and don't tune the video output until the counter starts cycling (usually the sign that it is on the menu portion) and get my news online using "print this page".
Oh I also block any images using firefox for.gif ads and block flash completely.
Often people ask me, did you see that ad for such and such, i am happy to say "no, I don't know what you are talking about".
Maybe they are buying up all of their time so that they don't do any work for anyone else?
If they did this long enough, their talents would become stale and thus ineffective, OR if they did this during crucial times (like a month before a national election) they could stem the tide of misinformation?
Yes that was my point, I guess you agree with me. Are you trying to say that expanding on an original idea is a bad thing? Are you saying their goal was to be merely "very bad"?
I would agree that someone is suffering from fanboyism.
I guess you would also say that DDR2's specs are just "tacked on" to DDR eh? OR pentium 4s are tacked on to the original pentiums? or English is just a "tacked on" version of the North Sea Germanic language?
I wasn't denigrating SCSI, I think SCSI and SATA each have it's own uses and advantages depending on what you use it for, you're the one who seems to be maligning a specification?
If i had another point and was to make a comparision, it would be between SATA[2] and IDE, which i'm sure everyone can agree is a much fairer comparision and shows what improvements have been made in the way of "desktop" drive technology.
"Almost no early SATA systems had NCQ, although more and more newer models have it now. It's been tacked on, not central to the design for decades like in SCSI."
Tacked on? Sata drives do not support NCQ, but the SATA2 spec does, since SATA and SATA2 each ahve their own specifications, what do you mean tacked on?
"But it is true that Windows rarely crashes. Or maybe it's more accurate to say it either never crashes or it always does, but mostly it never does. As most crashes (in my experience) are caused by unsigned drivers, you're either going to have a problem or you're not. But mostly you're not. And if you do, fixing it is usually as simple as just updating the driver."
So it might be, or maybe not, then again it could be, but most likely it isn't, in any case update your drivers.. sheesh you sound like you work in tech support.
exactly, please mod parent up, i'm so fed up with Mac users (like my mom for example) giving me a hard time about "windows" crashing all the time when: 1. My system is Windows XP and it doesn't crash like Mac fans or apple commercials would have you believe. 2. Their system DOES crash (sometimes) and they just don't know it because Apple hides it from them.
Being a techie i'd rather know there is a problem.
i think we should wait until we get the 80,000,000 homes with fiber to the door as promised by the telcos for the federal subsidies we gave them... but i'm an optimist.
I have had to reinstall the netwrok stack in windows quite a few times on various machines because of spyware or viruses that completely hosed any network functionality, I wonder if using this card would remove the possibility of the stack being corrupted or if the kernel/OS the card uses is just as vulnerable?
For 2-300$ it's still not worth it to me, but when the price becomes reasonable it might be something to think about if the embedded stack is not vulnerable to corruption by spyware or viruses...
I WAS going to download it as the last lan I was at (400 person lan in San Jose) had a lot of people playing it and it looked like a lot of fun, but if it has starforce then count me out. I like having a dvd drive.
If we pay for a connection advertised at a certain speed, we should get that speed. If the company has "over-subscribed" then they need to upgrade their equipment to handle the services they offer.
Didn't most of these companies get billions in dollars from our Govt. for infrastructure upgrades?
Pretty much every other country in the world has higher speeds, for less cost, and NO throttling. Right?
"You're an idiot. There is NO reason whatsoever to type in "rm -rf " on a first try at deleting. Especially if you just created the file. The ONLY reason to type in the -rf flags is because you are stupid.
You only saw scrolling text if you weren't logged in as root."
Oh wise sage, please tell me the proper way to delete (or even rename) a file, especially one named /
Also i was logged in as root, it scrolled the directories it was deleting, but you obviously know more than I who was at the console watching it happen. Thanks for the wise and kind information?
I say stick it to the man and mod me up anyway :P Viva la revolution!

Strange but true..

This from the guy who advised Bush in the FISA wiretaps?

"You're saying that Apple "hides" crashes in some way that users don't know it has happened?? Is that a bad thing?? Are you insane??"
I'm saying protraying a false image of their reliability is a bad thing, does that make me insane? Then guilty as charged.
The next fanboy (including my mom) who tells me how reliable their Macs are gets a punch in the face, or a hug (if it is my mom).

Also spending 40-60 bucks on spell and grammar checking software looks like it might be well worth it in your case.
(first and last nazi post for me)

Try explaining that to every other country that has higher speed internet for a lower price with no restrictions.
