I am not talking about those stupid "TIM" birds that you wind up and they flap around like they are having a seizure, I mean a real "R/C ORNITHOPTER". Here is a link to videos of one of the MANY models available. http://www.jgrc.biz/en-us/pg_25.html While the full-size project is definately cool, I think they are overstating it a bit. This design HAS been made mechanically possible well before now.

He makes a great point. But equally valid points can be made for wiki.

I think the whole article resembles the "standard software" (i.e. Microsoft) vs "Open Source" (i.e. Linux) debate.

Sure, there are benefits to standardized (there may be a better word to validate my point), single point of support solutions. Many organizations choose standardized (like Microsoft) software for this very reason.

But the same, if not more, arguments can be made for Open Source. Sure, the "developemnt team" is varied and open, there is no single source of support. But, for the most part, the system is more secure and, with an entire community supporting it, the updates come out much faster.

This seems to me like an un-winnable argument. Like religion or politics, it is hard to point to a single point of fact that will make everyone see it "one way".

  8. In my humble experience... on The Verdict on WinXP SP2? · · Score: 1

SP2 is best when installed on a virgin copy of XP or directly as an SP2 enhanced I86 package- the point is install it before any other applications to ensure less (better chance of, anyway) application issues.

While the security features are indeeed enhanced, some of them are simple less functionality.

Point being- don't count on your users to be able to handle the firewall setup and possible not the maintenance.

If I were in charge of rolling this out, I would still rely on a thrid party firewall for host protction (in addition to the normal network security) and virus protection.

I think most admins will find that several "features" of SP2 may need to be tweaked or turned off to allow compatability in certain environments.

I am not a MS basher, but I am also a fan of several other O/S's. I think SP2 is a good attempt, albeit a little late and yet still too premature for release, to fix a few of the trouble spots on the worlds most popular and most targeted OS.

As with ANY O/S, if you are relying stricly on the O/S to provide you with protection, you are only asking for trouble. Heck, PIX firewalls were advertised as "Secure out of the box", but I would never leave one at a client site that way.

No matter what O/S you run, and hopefully you try several, make sure you have a good firewall and A/V package installed and understand how to maintain it.

As a performance and security analyst, I deal with this every day. You honestly cannot have the best of both worlds.

Especially in the end-users opinion...security hampers performance. Harder/longer passwords, firewall policies that restrict surfing and streaming- they don't see it as secure, they just think the network sucks!

From the IT staff's point of view, these are not seen as performance issues, they are security enhancements

Stateful packet insopection, Intrusion detection, port-knocking- the more secure we get, the more cycles required to execute a task. Absolute security and ansolute performance cannot currently co-exist. One is going to have make concessions.

If advertising on P2P networks is 'oxygen' for piracy, does that mean.....

Advertising on Indy cars encourages drivers to go 200+ MPH?

Advertising on NASCAR cars encourages to only turn left (except for two times a year)?

Advertising in adult magazines encourages people to do everything naked? Ok, that one may be stretching it, but you get my point......

Advertisers want the best bang for the buck. It's only a sensible business model.

Just as Indy wasn't created as an outlet to teach people to speed, P2P networks were not created (well, most of them) to allow people to Pirate.

People do speed, people do pirate software. Evil people will do evil things, regardless of who the advertiser is.

I mean, come one, do you really think that stupid Joe Camel guy was encouraging kids to smoke? I think a half naked lady is more encouraging to a 13 year old than a dromendon with a phallic symbol for a nose.

    Another excellent point.

All I can say in return is, if Wal-mart is the Pharmacy (they are mine), then the RFID tags are already installed and the Wal Mart interweb will soon eclipse the real one even more.

I think I am siding on the good of RFID tags because I have once received fake medication. While it was discovered quickly, and the pills were simply sugar pills and not anything toxic, it was scary until the diagnosis was complete.

I say mod us both up insighful and call it case closed.

  13. Re:The Label is on the pharmacy bottles on RFID Labels On Prescription Drug Bottles · · Score: 3, Insightful

You make a very valid point. But, think of it this way.

The cost is about 20 cents (or 250 canadian dollars...just teasing) per bottle. That same bottle will fill several prescriptions. The costs to you will be anywhere from less than one cent to 20 cents max.

PLUS, your co-pay, if you are insured, is not going to change. Technically, you will not really pay anything.

Now, I know a valid argument can be made to say that any cost will make premiums go up, etc, BUT, think of this. RFID will cost much less to implement than child proof caps did and we did not pay a lot for them.

Seriously, I think it will be ok.

Then again, I do take a lot of said medication.....

This will save you MORE than money. This will potentially save you (or your family members) lives as it prevents fake drugs- or at least makes them a lot harder to produce.

The number of fake pills out there is staggering. This is actually a 'good' implementation of RFID.

The only thing this has to do with the little brown bottle you bring home is that it may vist a few cents more (the tag costs like 20 cents, the tagged bottle may fill 10-50 prescriptions). The benefit is that you can be pretty darn sure tha medicine you get is legit.

    I think it's worth it.
