RTFA. Your comment makes no sense, there was a "minority" individual wearing a veil for religious/cultural beliefs who was not given the same treatment.

  3. His problem is that he is white on Supermarket Bans Jedi Knight · · Score: 1

Discrimination laws only seem to be applicable to "minorities" (in quotes because they aren't always really in the minority). If you are a white guy of European ancestry with your own church then you are pretty much on your own because you don't have lobbyist groups and mouthpieces on CNN fighting for your cause. Noone is looking out for you. Equality is only for groups who can get on the news. Now, given that this is news, this guy might actually effect some change in the policies of this particular supermarket. Personally, I think if they don't allow hoodies and that is what you wear you ought to go to a different supermarket because they don't deserve your money, the article indicates that the jedi in question plans to do just that. Also, raising a stink about it and getting on the news is another way to force them to change by affecting their bottom line. Kudos to this guy, I may not agree with the teachings of the Jedi church but at least they seem to know how to handle adversity.

I'm not in the KKK or anything so please just take this for the observation that it is. I am for equal treatment of everyone.

  4. !wiretap on "Wiretapping" Charges May Be Oddest Ever Recorded · · Score: 4, Insightful

Why can't the legal system use common sense. Simply recording something is not the same as a wiretap. A wiretap implies access to conversations through some sort of technological loophole or exploit and is usually long term. If this is to be illegal then the law should refer to unlawful recording without consent.

IMHO, it doesn't make sense that it can be illegal to record a conversation that you are part of since you have been explicitly granted access to the information (the guy is F@#$ing talking to you).

Or we could make an effort to change traffic laws such that 100% of people following them is the most efficient system (assuming some sort of minimum level of safety). People would not be tempted to break traffic rules if it slowed down their commute. Obviously, this suggestion may not be possible in the real world but it's worth looking into.

Should every piece of software MS releases be arbitrarily priced the same regardless of quality or demand? The cost of developing a better consumer product is generally higher causing the price point to be higher. Also, demand for Vista is lower so the price will be lower. Fundamental Economics.

Step 3: Keep DRM servers online and get more free advertising for new store while also appearing to give a crap what your customers think.

  21. Re:16 steps? on Managing the PlayStation 3 Wi-Fi Network · · Score: 1

Let's ingore the fact that you can get XBL for $40 a year american (prepaid cards are cheaper than the online prices of $50 and they actually give you 13 months instead of 12). After taxes that is $3.33 a month to expand the scope of every xbox game I own and possibly add a significant amount of replay value. I believe it is well worth it.

Conversly, I have used the PS3 online network and I believe that it is not currently worth $3.33 a month. The good PR Sony gets for allowing people to use it for free most likely greatly outweighs the cost benefit of charging the few people that would pay for it. Do you really believe that Sony would not choose to charge for PS3 online services if they thought people would pay?

Perhaps it is not all the fault of the school system?

I'm sure it is difficult to raise two children who are quite different in ability, but I feel like someone should point out that a number of people with an IQ of 130+ (and perhaps 65) graduate from public school and go on to do wonderful things. I would venture a guess that many people here have an IQ over 130, were incredibly bored in high school, and came through it just fine.

I have an IQ of about 140 and got Bs in high school. My parents understood that I would not be wasting a lot of effort "learning" in high school and gave me the freedom to do other things outside of school so that I would have an outlet. These opportunities were not afforded to my older brother, who has a similar IQ, and so he dropped out of high school after failing ninth grade four times.

  23. Re:Now all we need... on McCain Backs Nuclear Power · · Score: 1

You get around this by building the new nuclear plants on the same sites as the old ones (if there is room of course). The community around the nuclear plant where I work is generally supportive of nuclear power generation. This site has been generating power for nearly 40 years without major incident which goes a long way toward gaining trust. Also, the jobs created through the construction and continued operation of a nuclear power facility can breathe new life into the failing economy of a small city. While this is not generally important to the elderly (the NIMBY BANANAs tend to be older), it is certainly important to people with college degrees who are driving a delivery truck or asking if you'd like fries with your burger. Eventually the voices of the people who are opposing clean energy will not be as loud as those in support of it and we will make progress toward lowering energy costs and improving the environment. Nuclear power will be part of that progression.

  24. Re:Lotus Elise on Efficiency? Think Racing Cars, Not Hybrids · · Score: 1

I have a friend who has a 2006 lotus elise ($34000) with 190hp and it gets 29mpg highway and does 0-60 in about 5.2 (4.9 officially but normal humans can't hit that). For a performance car I would say that has very reasonable gas mileage. Of course this is due to the low weight, which I believe is about 1950lbs (500 or so less than a mini cooper). As an added bonus it is said to be the second best handling car under $100,000 which can certainly help avoid accidents (you don't want to hit anything in this car).
