You can act all high and moral if you'd like, but take a look at this quote.

Over 120 total searches have been executed in the past 24 hours in 27 states and in 10 foreign countries. Foreign searches were conducted in Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, the Netherlands, Singapore, Sweden as well as Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Now, imagine for a second you don't know what this story is about. What would this strike you as ? An international terrorist hunt ? Al-Qaeda being searched for ? drug trafficking being taken seriously ?

No. All this effort is being directed towards fucking children sharing fucking movies and warez. Yes, it's illegal. But Come ON! 27, states, 10 foreign countries ? I don't want to know the time, money, and coordination that went into this. Giving something as relatively non-threatening as warez pirating this level of attention is absolutely appalling, especially given the constant "high terror" alert status we've been enjoying oh so much. GO FIND OSAMA. Goddam...

I've always been a little confused by the anti-TV sentiment here. Everyone says "there's nothing to watch, all tv is garbage." What about...
    Stargate SG-1
    The Simpsons (sharks or not)
    Malcolm
    Chapelle
    South Park
24 (Thanks for that 7-week break, fox. Way to ruin the momentum.)
    Enterprise
Scrubs (funniest show on tv, maybe ever)
Justice League (never saw it ? try it.)
    Smallville
    Crank Yankers
    Aqua teen hunger force

That's just the new stuff. Tivo has been picking up plenty of oldschool Sci-fi lately, especially Quantum Leap, Sliders, and Hulk (Bill Bixby). SG1 reruns are on constantly for those who haven't caught on to it yet. There's new Family Guys coming, reruns of that and Futurama on CN. Seinfeld, Simpsons are on constantly. Clone wars just ended, and was pretty interesting.
So... what's the problem ? Get a tivo if you need to. I don't even have HBO, and half the shows mentioned in this thread as "top quality tv" are on HBO. You've got options.

    First off...

There are a lot of posts below mentioning that "real time" != "computer time". Anyone who has run SETI or the UD Agent can tell you, there's less of a difference than you may think. For the vast part of any day, your processor is sitting close to 0% usage (I'm speaking for home computers, not graphics processing systems, etc). Any machine dedicated to this could easily hit 23+ hrs per day, even if the process priority is "lowest" or "idle". I have a machine here that I rebooted about 10 hours ago, and the UD agent has used 8 Hrs/30 minutes since then - and I've been actively using the box.

Second, I think people will have a Massive interest in a program like this. Think of how many clock cycles get dedicated to SETI, and they don't pay $1/hr. 6 computers here, @ $20/day ? That's more than $800/week (assuming legality/no B.S. from the company). Can I say no to an extra $800 a week ? Even $400 a week ? Morality of spam aside, that's a tough decision.

    Not at all.

I have a fairly lengthy commute to work each day.

Honestly... I am surprised there are not MILLIONS of accidents per day, our streets littered with the bodies of the dead and dying. Each morning, it's the same thing.

EVERYONE is on a cell phone. Or worse. Some are reading. Some are trying to write something down, paper pressed against the wheel, pen in hand. Some are on the phone, trying to write something down. Some are apparently trying to find a well-hidden item, perhaps tucked below the passenger seat. The other day, I was being tailgated at 90+ Mph... by a fully-loaded flatbed. He was so furious that he actually got out of his truck at the toll booth, came up to my window, and told me he would "bitch-slap" me if I ever did that again (did what ?). And you wonder why you turn on the traffic report each morning and hear about the overturned tractor trailers and trucks.

I was rear-ended last week, while sitting at a dead stop at a traffic light. His explanation ? "yeah... I hit ya." Thanks. On my way home from the collision center in the rental car, I was bumped again from behind - AGAIN, sitting at a dead stop in traffic. No damage this time.

It's going to take more than a vibrating steering wheel to help these people. While behind the wheel, actually driving is the last thing on their minds.

Not to mention the chiropractors and "Auto accident assistance" people who seem a little too disappointed when I tell them I wasn't hurt. How do ALL these people know I was rear-ended ? Do I look like a mountain of dollar bills to them ?
