And whose media voluntarily does not report on important topics of government corruption reported everywhere else in the world?

    The US are nothing but a pain for the UN. They don't obey to the UN like most other countries do obey. They aren't worth much as a member. Wow, just wow. Please be so kind as to look up the league of nations, then think about how much the US provides in money and peacekeeping. After that rethink the statement above.

    the next best thing would have been to not have supported Hussein in the 1980s. You do realize we supported Hussein as a check against the Iranians who had just turned into that theocracy you are so afraid of? As for the sanctions idea look up oil for food and find out how Saddam was gaming the system. You also seem to be mistaken that any Saddam/Sunni loss of power wouldn't result in a near civil war, or just how effective Saddam's regime was in killing those he couldn't control.

    United States citizens either rightly or wrongly still believe they have some voice in their govt. as opposed to the UN which is percieved as a glorified debate society that holds a let's bitch about the United States having capital punishment while we ignore genocide in the Sudan or place Libya in charge of the comission on Human Rights.

    Hint, the title of the post I was repling to was "Should've listen..." I was pointing out a scenario in which the opinion, Don't build a city there(in regards New Orleans) given by people(yes, I realize I was over generalizing since the native americans are/were not a monolithic society) who might not have the most enlightened view. Hint: mistaking opinion for fact is a common /. mistake. Speaking of common /. mistakes,the apparent anti-humor bias, since my post was more to point out the parent posts complete lack of understanding of the economic importantance of the port of New Orleans. A feat that was far better accomplished by another poster.

    Careful there, what you are describing could be twisted into a bizzare utilitarianism, which might state that the most moral/greater good to Yahoo's shareholders(a large group of people) would be to turn over the information regardless of what happens to this reporter(single person). The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one.

    I understand that it was the intersection of trade routes back in the day, but what is there today?

    Um, It happens to be the mouth of the Mississippi river, where people up north can send their freight to ocean going vessels, kinda like a trade route, oh wait it is a trade route and who ever modded you post interesting is a slashbot.     Let's see, the great and loyal ally who didn't allow our planes to fly over their territory when we wanted to thank Libia for its support of terrorism? As for the great french trappers, are you perhaps refering to the ones who along with the indians, our first president fought against? And do not delude yourself into thinking that the French monarchy, who decided to send ships to aid our(the colonies) rebellion was doing so out of any love for democratic principles. It was to attack their long time enemy the British Empire. Also we americans should feel indebted to the French. If only we could have rescued them from one of their beligerent neighbors.

    The answer to the question why do good vs wrong vs whatever feels good is simple. If everyone did what ever they wanted without regard to others there would be anarchy, great if you are the strongest, meanest, most invulnerable mother f'cker otherwise, you/society acts in an somewhat altruistic manner, so that social pressures persuade others to behave in a similar manner. Thus allowing society to advance and continue. Now, the question of good vs. wrong in any singular situation for any one person is clearly a cost/benefit calculation

    Gee, if only red light camera's were used as an enforcement tool, and not a revenue generator. Oh, it would also help if speed limits were set and reviewed via a scientific and democratic process. However, in most areas they aren't. Btw poll taxes also increase the govt. tax base, do you also think they are good?

    You do realize that the only major difference between what the US did and what you want is the fig leaf of UN support. So the US didn't bow and scrape enough or appease the French and Russian creditors who were holding most of Saddam's debt. Thus the US went in with the support of other nations, hardly unilateral. Does the current situation suck yes, but would it suck less if the French and Russians also got some of that fat oil money, no. Soon the UN(the general assembly at least), will be judged as effective as the league of nations.
