Modern medicine can be hideously expensive if taken to extremes. People can be kept alive for weeks or months at $10000 a day. Ten thousand baby boomers a day turn 65. Where will the $trillions come from to keep us (yes I'm one) alive.
My 71 year old mother-in-law (I have a young wife) has needed three hundred thousand a year in medical care for the last five years. She is in her final months of life and her cost have quadrupled. We could put a student through a state collage for every week of her care. Now imagine four million people a year needing this much care, again, who is going to pay for it?
Medicare is available for those over 65, now expanded it to the rest of the population. The death panels will be working overtime.
Farmers do not "owe" anyone something to eat just because their product is eatable. They produce a product to sell for a profit. Food production has become politicized because a country needs food security. Most farmers depend on market forces and if things go wrong you can go bankrupt (ask me how I know). The ability to bank money away to get you through lean times is necessary. Government run farms where food is produced with thought to profit have been tried. How did that turn out?
None of you have a clear line of sight ( in the US) south? DirectTv and Dish network offer full packages (minus premium channels) for $70 a month with an hd dvr. We did switch from Dish to Direct when Dish did the same thing with AMC. I live in the sticks and get TV and internet via satellite.
Seriously? What do I or anyone "lose" if we can't copy a photo of a building or a drawing of a mouse? Patents, on the other hand, while not diminishing society can greatly restrict growth. A cure for cancer that few can afford, a more efficient power source kept off the market, patents can greatly affect my life, drawings of mice, not so much.
I have a wife like that. She once destroyed a keyboard and a flatbed scanner with one touch. He Galaxy S2 has survived the one month she has had it. Not having a path to ground may save the phone.
Said woman went outside to her car and retrieved the gun. Stand your ground no longer applied. That being said she was afraid for her children, I believe, and it was her home and she did not try to harm him, just send a message. Common sense is not common in the judicial system.
Are all the images low res, or just the ones released to the public? My wife was caught with a traffic light cam (in the US) and the video was HD quality, you can view it online.
What is the growth rate in Japan? They have no open land border for migrants to stream across and little work for immigrants, legal or illegal. Elder care will have to be done with robots if old people can afford it.
I remember the videos of starving children in Ethiopia and Biafra. Get prepared for even worse tragedies.
My wife, my ex, her husband, and I have four children between us. That is below the growth level. We have no grandchildren. And 40 years ago children weren't seen as a problem.
You forgot heavy funding and munitions from Russia and China. If either one sticks their nose in the next American civil war it's going to get bloodied by both sides.
If enough Americans volunteer to remain childless in 75 years the population problem will be solved. Immigrants and their children will have to be kept out also.
Unfortunately only the intelligent ones (such as my children) are doing that. The dumb will be the breeders, Idiocracy is actually a documentary.
You can't "allow" new business models, the best (most profitable) ones are in place now. You can out law certain practices. Having the Federal Health Service responsible for all health related research, development, and production means a DoD sized budget and some political appointee deciding what line of research to take. Someone's pet disease may get $100 billion research dollars to treat 20 people.
My mother-in-law requires $three hundred thousand a year in medical care. Has for the past eight years and probably for five more. My wife thinks it's wonderful but can we as a nation provide this level of care to everyone?
It's doesn't matter if a new drive is cheap, the original drive has the operating system and drivers. It's a PITB to load an operating system and find drivers.
You are totally right, the problem is if you confiscated 100% of the riches' income the deficit would still be 500 billion. What good are tax increases if congress spends twice what the increase brings?
You have made the common mistake of equating tax RATES with tax PAID. Here from The American online magazine, "In 1980, for example, the top 5 percent of income earners paid only 37 percent of all income taxes. Today, the top 1 percent pay that proportion, and the top 5 percent pay a whopping 57 percent."
My 40 year old Lawyer son has a 4 bedroom home and drives a BMW. My 22 year old son drives a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix. He has driven it since he was 16 and has named it "Rollin" because it's always rolling. He also has a two year old smartphone that he is welded to. Of course it's dying so for his birthday he will be getting a upgrade on his birthday this month. He also has a laptop and game tower, gifts from his brother, With whom he lives with while going to school in their town.
We drive by a 10,000 sq ft home on the river going to his grandmothers house. He imagines the big M on-the front gate to stand for his initial. I tell him work hard and follow advice from good people and he might make it.
A Canadian air line had a new jet but the fuel gauges malfunctioned. They measured the fuel level in the tanks but the dip stick they used was marked in liters. The pilots converted liters to gallons and thought they had enough fuel, but they used the American gallon conversion of 3.7 liter to gal instead of 4.5 liter for imperial gal. At thirty thousand feet they ran out of fuel. The pilots did a safe dead stick landing on an abandoned forest runway.
If you watch an American NFL game on television you are told that the broadcast is for the viewing enjoyment of the audience only and any other use is forbidden. I think watching it to create a dialog of it for others to read would constitute an other use. I think the copyright for movies is similar. If enough people jump up and down and spin around on their eyebrows the law might get changed. I've seen that work for some people who think their right to something has been violated.
You are very astute. Society is not so much "catching up" but being dragged into it. No one will be forced to gay marry but soon they will have to "demonstrate" acceptance.
Children in the Amazon jungle fight over the tastiest termite queen while mothers here scream and slap a child that tries to eat a bug. Our parents teach us what things we are suppose to think are disgusting. If children are exposed to sexual contact of all sorts and no one around them says any thing about it nothing will be "unnatural". Imagine the creche in "Logans Run". The book, not the movie.
This might work but some states do not even have hydro-power. Some thing to to with being flat. Solar and some tidal power is available in Florida but cheap battery storage is needed for night time usage. With our warm, moist climate air conditioning is needed 24/7 most of the year.

Those of us with severe carpal tunnel syndrome can not. Even two finger typing can't be sustained as the pain level rises.

Since I was born in 1952 the population of Africa has grown from 200 million to over a billion. Maybe you can talk to them too.

My dog must have a cast iron stomach. He drags home week old road kill and savors it for another week.

These transformers are 100 ton super oversize semi loads, built from the inside out. The process can not be sped up. Eighteen months.
In Florida most gas stations are required to have generators, as long as there is gasoline in the tanks (or diesel), the pumps will run.
